Chereads / The Echo of My Soul / Chapter 29 - Creep

Chapter 29 - Creep

Or more like, do I even have the right to assume? Mei only said Christopher was a good backing. She found him also a bit attractive.

Falling for him? That sounded too much. She may be liking him, but that was it. Though, I do wonder sometimes what her reaction would be upon waking up to this situation.

Being technically a sister to the man she was chasing, for whatever reason.

Maybe she won't care, it wasn't like we had anything that actually made us related.

I didn't even know my grandma had another child. What else do I not know, what was she hiding-

"Ah!"

I gasped, and pulled myself quickly together. Someone caught me by surprise as they held my hand with both of their hands.

Reno tenderly put his arm around my shoulder, trying to assure me that he was there. I exhaled softly, and shook their hand.

"Hello there, thank you for coming! How are you?"

"Heheheh…"

A small, creepy giggle escaped from their lips. I tried to understand whether they were a man or a woman, but it felt weird. Anyway, I decided to consider her as a woman as soon as she spoke.

Her way of speaking wasn't that of a man.

"Ehehe… My… To have you speak to me, to grace us…"

"Umm…," Feeling a little uncomfortable, I felt lost about what I should say, but I managed some words, "Yeah, I wasn't actually planning this. But I wanted to speak with Corny a bit, it's unfortunate she felt ill."

"Ehhhh…"

She tilted her head, her long hair falling to the side, finally showing her face properly.

"She actually dares… To make you wait?"

Looking at her eyes, my heart went cold. Something in those eyes made me feel danger. Somehow, however, I was unable to pinpoint it.

All I knew was that they weren't normal at all.

"Well! We can't say it like that, it's truly a misfortune she got sick, but it's not like she forced me to wait or take her place haha~"

In fact, she did. But well. It was whatever.

The woman was about to say something, but I decided it was best if she didn't.

"I'm so sorry everyone, I think our time is up!"

Saying that, I released myself from her hold. Everyone was complaining but the guards carefully stopped them, making a way for me and Reno to move.

Leaning on his chest and watching my steps, I murmured softly, hoping he won't hear me.

"I think I'm changing. But it's not a change that I like. Everything seemed different after Marcos' cheating on me."

It was as if the world got triggered by that accident. And suddenly, everything pulled me into deeper chaos.

Wanting to run away was never enough, I needed to do some actions for that. I'm trying, but I'm afraid.

My feelings were telling me that something would go back to being the same.

But… Which 'same' was it? To what 'same' was my feelings referring to…

"Why do you not like it, though? I agree you're being too weird and different. But isn't that healthier?"

Is it? Who knows.

"I don't know, Reno. Something just seems… Wrong. This person shouldn't be me."

He probably didn't understand half of whatever I was saying, but I truly thought so.

Not me, but Mei. Wasn't it only natural that each of us controlled a certain side? I suppressed the flaring emotions, and Mei dealt with the side effects of being more impulsive.

"Well… I prefer you just being who you are."

The wind whistled dramatically as he said that, making me laugh dryly. Me, huh…

Who am I?

"Well, on a different topic. How do you think your boyfriend will react to that?"

Eyes widening, Reno cursed while blushing, "Oh shit! He totally doesn't know about us being siblings, and doesn't even know I'd appear like this in front of everyone! He will be teased to no end!"

He anxiously bit his lips, making me remember how this boy was always so anxious and hopeless about his boyfriends a lot. Jeez, I wonder if he can even have control in this relationship?

"Alright alright, don't be so anxious. Just go for your boyfriend?"

"I, what? But what about you? Alice, you are too weak, and what if someone attacks you??"

He almost shook me from my shoulders but realized that would only make my condition worse. Instead, he grabbed his hair with frustration.

"Jeez. Just listen to me, go ahead. I'll just call Christopher to come here."

"Oh! Right, that's possible!" Laughing happily, he huggef me, "Please call him and be careful! Take absolute care about yourself!"

Done with that, he released me from his hug and ran on foot ahead. I shook my head in amusement, and then called Christopher.

Surprisingly, he didn't answer me. Haa. My lord, talk about being unfortunate. Maybe I'd end up being alone here-

Oh! I remember something, he had my phone before and entered his name. In case he didn't respond, there must be another number who would answer me.

Whether the one who answered was him or not didn't matter at this point as long as the response was helpful for me.

While searching for the number, my bad luck striked, and it started raining. I yelped and hid in one of the alleyways, making sure to hide my face from anyone.

My clothes were wet and sticking to my skin, but it wasn't like complaining would help. I kept calling their numbers, but no one answered.

Hah. Very funny, now I'm stuck here? But what if someone was-

"Shit."

Looking to my side, I saw someone suspicious slowly getting closer to me. My only reaction was to curse and try to slither away without altering them.

But, since when was that easy?

Every step was together, and my heart started beating faster. An ally? Maybe, but how would I know? Maybe it was the Diva… Or maybe it was someone else… What if it was Marcos…?

At this point, too many people were after me. I felt scared, I didn't care, I just needed to have someone with me now. I almost sobbed in my mindscape, when finally, a soothing voice echoed through me.

Shhh. No need to panic, take it easy.

Mei! Ah! Please help me, Mei!

What are you crying for…? I was out for some time, and this is what happened?

Mei, I miss you, miss your protection, and miss everything about you! But we can't speak about this all now, that person seems so dangerous! I don't even know if we can fight!

The sky was turning darker as we moved in the same speed, our movement was even synced, only issuing more fear into me.

The thunder rumbled through the sky, and I stopped moving, or more like, Mei had taken over.

"Who are you?"

She asked coldly while scolding me internally for letting myself panic like that.

Chill, girl. We've been through worse.

But despite her reassurance, my worry only increased. The person stayed completely silent, not saying anything, and no movement was heard.

Mei slowly turned around, pushing our hair away and was ready to snarl at the attacker-

Only, perhaps not only she has guts about horrible situations. Just as she seemed to have foreseen my situation with Marcos, I apparently foresaw our current situation.

The dark sky was lit up, accompanied by a deafening thunder. At the same time, the only noise that got out from our lips was a grunt of pain.

Something sharp penetrated our neck, and both me and Mei soon saw our world fading away.

Mei… For once, I was right.

What will happen to us now…?
