Chapter 22 - Chapter 21: Captive

The daughter of the head maid leaned forward, her piercing gaze fixed on Clara and Mila. As she spoke, her tone was both stern and demanding. "Isn't it curious that my necklace ended up in both of your rooms? Explain how that's possible, and perhaps I'll find reason to believe your innocence."

Clara, undeterred, responded with a tone of frustration, "We don't know how it happened. We're as shocked as you are. But we are not thieves, and we would never take something so valuable."

Mila, sensing the gravity of the situation, added, "We're not denying that the necklace was found in our room, but it doesn't mean we stole it. We're being framed, and we need a fair investigation to uncover the truth."

Lydia, arms crossed and a smug expression on her face, chimed in again, "Framed or not, the evidence is against you. The necklace magically appears in your rooms. What are the odds?"

The daughter of the head maid, still studying Clara and Mila, raised an eyebrow. "Magically, you say?" she mused, her eyes narrowing with a hint of skepticism. "Perhaps you'd like to elaborate on that point, considering how both of you seem to be involved in this mysterious affair."

Clara, frustration evident in her voice, explained, "We mean it figuratively. We're saying it's beyond our understanding, not that there's some magical force at play."

Mila, trying to diffuse the tension, added, "We're not trying to be clever with our words. We just want you to understand that something doesn't add up, and we're being wrongly accused."

The daughter of the head maid, seemingly unswayed by their pleas, leaned back in her chair. "This investigation will continue until I am satisfied with the answers," she declared. "Lydia, keep a close eye on them. We can't afford any more surprises."

As the daughter of the head maid rose from her seat, the servants dispersed, leaving Clara and Mila in Lydia's watchful gaze.

Everyone was still on edge about all the commotion that happened because of the necklace. Even though it was already found, the real culprit was lingering around the estate.

After Mila and Clara were taken captive, the servants on the estate went back to their tasks, but the tension was still in the air.

They still haven't thought that something like that would happen in the estate, and the person of interest is someone that almost everyone knows.

Clara was known to the estate as a servant who rescued a number of new servants who were under unfair treatment and was highly respected for her bravery and kindness. The fact that she was now a captive added to the unease and concern among the servants.

As they continued with their duties, whispers and hushed conversations filled the hallways, speculating on who could be behind this sinister plot. It was clear that until the real culprit was apprehended, the atmosphere on the estate would remain tense and full of suspicion.

Mila and Clara are inside their room, captive in the space they called their own.

Mila was sitting anxiously on the edge of her bed as she thought about the ordeal. She couldn't help but feel a sense of frustration and helplessness, knowing that their fate was now in the hands of someone else.

Clara, on the other hand, tried to maintain a calm demeanor, her eyes filled with determination and a glimmer of hope.

The room where Mila and Clara were held captive felt smaller than ever, with the walls seemingly closing in on them. The air was thick with tension and the weight of uncertainty. Mila's restless thoughts echoed in the silence of the confined space, while Clara's eyes darted around, assessing the room for any sign of an opportunity.

Mila, breaking the silence, voiced the frustration that lingered in her mind. "How did it come to this? We were just doing our jobs, and now we're treated like criminals."

Clara, attempting to offer reassurance, spoke with a measured tone, "We'll get through this, Mila. The truth will come out, and justice will prevail. We just need to stay strong and united."

Outside their room, the estate continued its daily routines, but the shadow of suspicion cast a pall over the once-harmonious environment. Servants exchanged knowing glances as they went about their tasks, silently questioning who among them could be capable of such deception.

Clara's reputation as a defender of fairness and justice added another layer of complexity to the situation. The fact that someone so respected was now labeled a person of interest fueled the servants' unease. They couldn't fathom how their trusted companion could be entangled in such a convoluted web of accusations.

Meanwhile, in their confined space, Mila couldn't shake off the feeling of vulnerability. "What if they never find the real culprit? What if we're stuck here forever, labeled as thieves?" she mumbled, her voice tinged with anxiety.

Clara, maintaining her composure, replied, "We have to believe in the fairness of the investigation. The truth has a way of revealing itself, and we must be patient. We're not alone in this; there are servants who know us and believe in our innocence."

As the day unfolded, the estate buzzed with a mixture of normalcy and tension. The servants carried out their duties, but an undercurrent of suspicion lingered in every interaction. Whispers and sidelong glances followed those who were connected to the ongoing investigation.

Back in their room, Mila paced restlessly, unable to shake off the gnawing uncertainty. Clara, however, tried to find solace in her convictions. "We've weathered storms before, Mila. We'll weather this one too. Trust in the bonds we've built with our fellow servants. The truth will prevail."

Mila was put at ease at the minimum because of Clara's reassuring words, but deep down, she couldn't help but wonder if their trust was misplaced.

The weight of the investigation seemed to grow heavier with each passing day, and Mila couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched.

She knew they had to stay strong and united, but the uncertainty continued to gnaw at her, making it difficult to find peace of mind.

Even though the two of them are people of interest, they are still given food at the right time and even given the chance to take a bath once.

However, the small comforts provided to them did little to alleviate Mila's underlying fear. The constant surveillance and lack of control over their own lives only intensified her sense of unease, leaving her questioning if their basic needs were just a facade for something more sinister.

The two of them were silent, as if they were in their own world. Mila was still overthinking while sitting on her bed. Clara, on the other hand, was watching the outside world through the window with a low-key melacholic expression on her face.

Mila couldn't help but wonder if Clara shared the same apprehensions about their situation or if she was simply lost in her own thoughts.

As the days passed, Mila's unease grew, and she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something lurking beneath the surface of their seemingly comfortable confinement.

"Clara," Mila called, breaking the silence enveloping their room.

Clara turned her head to Mila and asked, "What?"

After spending time without doing anything in particular in their room, it made Mila overthink things, and a 'what if' situation was on her mind.

"What if Helen was behind all of this?" Mila's voice trembled slightly as she voiced her suspicion, her eyes searching Clara's face for any sign of agreement or disagreement.

"Helen? I haven't seen her after she was punished. It was heard that she was kicked out though," Clara replied, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Helen might not be a nice person, but I find it hard to believe she would go to such lengths. Plus, we have no evidence linking her to anything suspicious."

Nodding in reluctant agreement, Mila acknowledged the lack of concrete proof. "You're right. It's just... everything feels so uncertain, and I can't help but wonder who might benefit from framing us."

Clara, understanding Mila's concerns, offered a reassuring perspective. "We need to focus on finding the truth, not just for ourselves but for everyone in the estate. Jumping to conclusions won't help us. Let's stay strong, support each other, and wait for the investigation to reveal the real culprit."

As they settled back into the uneasy quiet of their room, the search for answers continued. The truth, elusive and enigmatic, remained the elusive key to unraveling the mystery that had entangled them in a web of suspicion and intrigue within the estate.

As Clara and Mila pondered over the possible motives behind their framing, they couldn't help but wonder if there was someone with a hidden agenda.

Perhaps there were individuals within the estate who stood to gain from their downfall, making it even more crucial for them to uncover the truth and expose the real culprit.
