"Please focus Lady Kyra. Now then..." A well dressed man pushed up his glasses after tapping his pointing stick on the table a few times.
Kyra jolted up, a string of drool following, and she quickly tried to wake herself up, only to nod off again as she rested her head on her hand. The tutor session had barely started yet she was already done, but I was just getting started.
The great Rolland was eager to learn about this world, this place I suddenly ended up almost dead in a baby monster's body I didn't recognize. Right now the tutor, Mr. Pelono, was going over ancient history with Kyra. More specifically, the God's Era where the Gods of this world came down to help defeat the ever growing Demon Legion.
During this era, there was great advancement for magic, used to help the mortal races push back the demons. Supposedly the Gods couldn't physically come down to the physical world so they would make people their Avatars, granting them unimaginable power and wisdom, while providing divine prophesies to their devout followers to help command the masses.
It was a Golden era for this world.
"Eventually the God's had to return," Mr. Pelono continued, "They could not continue to influence the physical realm or they risked destroying the balance of power. In the first place, they could only intervene because of a Rogue God who directly interfered with the world.
"That Rogue would later be called a 'Dark God,' gave up part of his power to become mortal, upsetting the balance the world had. The God's only option was to provide blessings to heroes of the main races who fought against the demons.
"When they succeeded in killing the Dark God at the cost of millions of lives, the Gods were forced to leave. They do still provide the occasional blessing, in order to keep balance since the Dark God had many decedents in the form of demons and monsters.
"But remember, monsters are different from Magical Beasts in that- Lady Kyra!" Mr. Pelono turned back to find her dozing off again and promptly slapped the table with his stick.
Kyra jolted to attention. I felt bad for her, I wouldn't have minded being in her place if it was possible. History was interesting as long as I didn't need to be tested on it but it seemed too boring of a subject for this little girl.
*sigh* "I know this isn't your favorite subject Lady Kyra, but as a Duke's daughter, it is imperative that you learn the proper subjects. Even if you decide you do not want a part in this country's politics."
I guess the Sivillion household was a Duke's house, which I think is the highest? If that was the case it was no wonder why her father was so busy. It was an integral part of this country and how it functioned.
All of his children had big shoes to fill and it just got worse the younger the child was, leaving Kyra with the worst luck at the same time the best. While she would definitely looked down upon as the youngest and a commoner, there was less pressure in a way for her to accomplish something.
People would expect less out of her than someone like Kyle who seemed to be purebred noble even if he was the 6th son. That was probably why she had a much better time with Madam Serene's class rather than Mr. Pelono's, Magic was fun and interesting.
"Yes Mr. Pelono." Kyra grumbled.
Mr. Pelono sighed again before continuing his lecture, while Kyra turned to me for entertainment. I wasn't sure if I should be satisfying her boredom but I wobbled over to her chair and let her pick me up.
She then placed me on the table and giggled quietly as she began focusing on the lecture. It was surprising how just my presence was able to change her attitude but it allowed Mr. Pelono to continue without much interruption and let me learn my history.
While he didn't seem very fond of me, giving me a disgusted look when Kyra wasn't looking, he was professional enough to ignore me otherwise and focus on teaching. I couldn't really care about other's thoughts of me. While I could understand them, I had no way of communicating effectively so I just didn't think about it.
I was just a dumb animal in there eyes so I'd just play the part until changing my actions would benefit me or Kyra. A few hours later and my brain was full of knowledge while Kyra's was fried.
Today was mostly a history lesson but I got to know more about the world and its inhabitants. The God's era Mr. Pelono mentioned first was actually the shortest part of the lesson. There was very little known about that time other than what was found in Dungeons, Labyrinths and Towers, structures formed by the Dark God to create his seemingly infinite Demon Legion.
That was the theory anyways, since most of this world's ancient history came from these places where monsters crawled around. Those were also places of great wealth, since the Dark God loved creating powerful artifacts and giving them to his Legions to use against the Gods.
Besides the God's era, there were a number of smaller eras after it where war was rampant across the world. With the God's out of the picture, the many races grew greedy for power and wealth, going to war with each other for seemingly no reason.
Then a thousand or so years ago, the fighting stopped. Peace talks were held between the five great races: Elves, Dwarves, Beastmen, Giants, and Humans. They were also the same races who fought on the frontlines against the demons back in the God's era and were the main receivers of blessings.
Each race had their own specialties that they used to help bring prosperity and peace to the world. Humans mostly had their strengths in numbers and ingenuity, leading them to have the most territory out of the other Great Races despite their weaker individuality.
To prevent themselves from continuing conquest against their new allies, the humans divided themselves into 3 kingdoms: Torrent, Avia, and Rosia. Torrent was a coastal kingdom, sitting on the edge of the continent with a massive trade network to provide goods across the oceans and mountains, and boasting a strong navy to protect against sea monsters.
Avia was a Kingdom in the sky, built on a series of floating islands that were created during the God's era. They had a big network of commercial travel, tourism, and technology, allowing them to flourish and keep a good relationship with the other races.
Rosia, the Kingdom the Sivillion household was a part of, was the most inland kingdom, having borders with 3 of the Great Races: Elves, Dwarves and Beastmen. They had the biggest population of the three Human kingdoms and were the center for all things Magic. They boasts humanities best Academies for the Magical arts and a variety of other specialties, taking pages out of other races' books for the content they teach.
It was a highly diverse place to live with many more opportunities for common folk to move up to a more middle class standing or higher. Surprisingly, its trade networks were lacking compared to the other two kingdoms but with the world's isolationist stance gaining popularity, it wasn't difficult to see why.
While the four neighboring kingdoms had a decent relationship, it was just that. Decent. They were all slowly retreating back to their own races and religions, slowly but surely building up their own militaries again.
Mr. Pelono had gone on a long rant for part of it, making Kyra fall asleep but I enjoyed hearing his personal thoughts on where the world was moving toward. It was better to be safe than sorry even if it was unfortunate that everyone was growing wary of each other for no reason.
With the lesson basically over, Mr. Pelono woke up Kyra one last time, more gently this time before excusing himself. A maid quickly came in to take us back to her room to get changed again before taking her down for dinner.
Nobody was there but her, but given the functionality of this family, it didn't seem surprising. No one seemed to really like each other and all had their own agendas to pursue. They would all eat in their own rooms or offices or out in the town, not really interacting with each other.
It made things only lonelier for Kyra so I kept by her side as she ate, giving her a slight smile throughout her meal. With dinner done, we both went up to her room again and she played with me.
She showed me some of her favorite toys and books, as well as her extensive stuffed animal collection. She had names for all of them, and their introductions almost took an hour to complete before she grew tired.
A maid eventually came in and helped her get dressed for bed.
"Rollie sleeps with me..." She complained to the maid as she was tucked in.
The maid seemed reluctant but Kyra continued to complain so the maid picked me up carefully with a disgusted look, like I was some sort of turd and plopped me down next to Kyra.
With the lights out and the maid gone, it didn't take long for Kyra to begin drifting off.
"Thank you Rollie..." She mumbled as she hugged my shell, "You don't make it so lonely anymore..."
I looked at Kyra as she drifted off with some tears in her eyes. I couldn't imagine what she had to go through before I got here but it didn't seem good at all. I sighed to myself. With such a heartfelt confession like that, how could I go and leave now?
While it would've been nice to explore the world as I pleased, it would probably be safer here, as well as more enjoyable by this kid's side. I may just be a little armored creature but I've got something new to protect it seems.
