Chapter 6 - Half-way Allegiances

With The Velocity covering an impressive 5,000 kilometers, the inevitable depletion of its coal supply prompted Igor's suggestion: "Hey, we should make a stop to gather some resources we could burn for fuel." The collective agreement on the merit of this idea led to the decision to send Dmitry, accompanied by Vera, on a mission to secure the necessary fuel for their locomotive.

As they embarked on this essential task, Vera couldn't help but express her frustration: "You know, it sucks that no one believed you. There was life out here all along, and the colonel was just lying to us." Dmitry, understanding the weight of her words, shared a knowing glance with Vera, acknowledging the truth that had been concealed from them. "I mean, who could have known? He even put up mufflers to block the radios," Vera continued, her tone marked by a mix of disbelief and resentment.

In response, Dmitry, recognizing an opportunity to shed light on the extent of the deception, presented Vera with the latest radio records he had managed to maintain. "How'd you find music with the mufflers up?" she inquired, curious about the paradox of discovering auditory relief amidst the imposed silence. Dmitry, provided a nonchalant shrug.

Dmitry and Vera, after an arduous search, finally discovered a substantial pile of wood that held the promise of propelling The Velocity further on its journey. Recognizing the significance of their find, they retraced their steps back to the locomotive to enlist the help needed for transporting the wood. The rest of the team promptly assembled, and together, they coordinated efforts to gather and transport the wood to the train.

With the wood stockpiled near The Velocity, Igor designated Dmitry to oversee the critical task of fueling the engine room. Descending into the depths of the locomotive, Dmitry began the process of feeding the hungry fire with the gathered wood. As the flames roared to life, The Velocity responded by gradually accelerating along the tracks.

Anna, ever vigilant, summoned Dmitry back to the main deck. "That should be sufficient for now, Dmitry. Thanks for your assistance. I believe you've proven yourself worthy to join the special forces. What do you think, Vladimir?" Anna's inquiry carried a hint of skepticism, a scrutiny that did not go unnoticed by the colonel. Responding to her question, he curtly affirmed Dmitry's capability, discerning the underlying sharpness in Anna's voice.

With Dmitry seamlessly integrated into their ranks, the squad expanded to an impressive and now more robust thirteen members. Recognizing the significance of this addition, Daniil proposed, "Let's celebrate our new member then, shouldn't we?" He extracted a bottle of No.27 Jack Daniel's Gold Whisky from his pack, setting the stage for a celebratory atmosphere. The air filled with camaraderie as everyone joined the festivities, toasting to their success and Dmitry's induction into the squad. The revelry carried on through the night, with Dmitry eventually succumbing to the effects of a few spirited drinks, marking the culmination of a memorable celebration in honor of their new member.
