Chereads / The Reincarnated Mercenary's Only Skill is Item Box / Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 - Registration

Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 - Registration

"This must be the place," I muttered to myself, as a large building came into sight.

"Well, it literally says 'Astaroth Guild' on the signboard above the entrance, dumbass, so obviously it is," Responded Arkiela dryly.

Tch, shut up, bitch. I can't really talk to her out loud right now with all these people around, it'll look like I'm a crazy person talking to himself. And I'd rather not attract too much attention towards myself, if at all possible.

Today's the 2nd of November, 1029, a little over three years have passed since I made my first kills in this world, making it a total of eight years since I died and reincarnated here.

I just turned sixteen a few weeks ago, and I'm now a lot closer to the physical condition that I possessed when I was an aspiring gymnast during my previous life, though I still have a lot of room for improvement, I'm still a ways from reaching the physical condition I possessed at my peak as a mercenary.

During the last three years, I've continued training hard to develop my new body, while also gaining some real experience by hunting down thugs and criminals in Bael Town every few months, of which there's no shortage.

I've only killed a total of twenty-six people, I'd prefer to do so more often, but I need to be cautious, don't want to attract too much unwanted attention, which'll almost definitely happen if corpses were found in town every few days, so I need to spread out the timing of my kills across a wider amount of time.

Thanks to the people I've killed, I've gained a fair amount of EXP at this point, my current count is at 70. In order to raise my Mercenary's Item Box to Level 2, I need to reach 100 EXP. I've found a few ways to gain EXP, but killing people is the easiest and more effective way to do so.

Maybe Monsters too, I don't know, I haven't actually killed any yet. I have no trouble killing people, but I'm reluctant to kill animals, especially if they're just minding their own business. I mean, if a Monster attacks me, then yeah, I'd retaliate without hesitation.

But the idea of killing an animal unprovoked is pretty unpleasant, honestly. I've killed plenty of bugs, but I don't gain any EXP from those, and killing birds, which I do for food since the orphanage doesn't have enough to go around, but the EXP gained is minimal with birds too, it takes like five to ten birds before I gain even 1 EXP.

I also initially gained a slow but steady amount of EXP when I began training this new body and making it stronger and more agile, but the rate at which I've gained EXP through physical training has slowed down a lot lately, it probably won't be long before I completely stop gaining EXP via that method.

The majority of the EXP I've gained have been through killing lowlife scum, though the amount of EXP gained varies from person to person. Some only net 1 or 2 EXP while others can net upto 5 EXP. Maybe the amount depends on how much Magic they have or how strong they are, not really sure.

Oh, and as a result of me hunting and killing lowlives in Bael Town, crime has decreased a fair bit in the town. Not gonna lie, I'm kinda salty that I can't claim any bounties for any of the lowlives I've killed, but unfortunately, it's not that convenient.

Well, to be fair, it's not like I'm getting no money out of it at all, I've looted the corpses of my targets after killing them. I mean, it's not like they'll have any use for that money anymore, right?

Anyway, only Adventurers and Knights have access to jobs like that, bounties on criminals and the like. Ordinary civilians, like I currently am, can't take on such jobs. I really don't like killing for free, but at the same time, I can't afford to let myself get too rusty.

Adventurers are people who register with Guilds, where they can take on a wide range of jobs known as Quests. And Knights are those who are a part of the army serving the Royal family that rules the nation of Septen.

Interestingly, this nation doesn't have a class system, there's no nobles and commoners or whatever. Of course, the rich do still take advantage of and look down on the poor, that's just human nature. From what I've heard, most of the people who live in the Capital, Valefar City, are pretty snobby and arrogant.

Anyway, I was currently in a big city called Astaroth City, which is located a few kilometers away from Bael Town. I came here to register at the Guild in the city, I'm sick of being broke and having to live in that rundown, dirty old orphanage.

Ideally, I'd have liked to have established myself as a freelance mercenary in this world like I did in previous life, but that'd likely be way too difficult to accomplish.

The internet was a crucial element to my work as a merc in my previous life, and since it doesn't exist in this world and almost definitely won't be invented within the duration of my lifespan, the risk of trying to operate like I did in my previous life is much higher in this world.

Working in a Guild as an Adventurer will definitely put me out of my comfort zone, any and all jobs I take on and complete will be recorded and accessible to other people...I know that's probably not a big deal, but for some reason, I don't like it.

Flying under the radar and being covert will be pretty much impossible. The better I perform as an Adventurer, the more well-known I'm likely to become. If and when that happens, I'm not sure I'll be able to call myself a mercenary anymore.

Well, whatever. The label doesn't really matter to me, and while I do wish I had a more stealthy option, becoming an Adventurer is the best and easiest way to earn money with my skillset in this world.

Hm, actually, is being covert a necessity to be a mercenary? I know that's definitely the case for assassins, and while assassination is my speciality and most preferred type of job, I'm certainly not restricted to only assassinations.

I mean, what even is the definition of a mercenary, anyway? Why am I even entertaining this train of thought? It's kinda pointless...

"Uh, aren't you going in?" Inquired Arkiela, snapping me out of it.

Huh? Oh, right.

I then approached the entrance of the Guild building, pushing the doors open and stepping inside, looking around as I entered. A few people glanced in my direction as the doors shut behind me, but most of the people inside weren't paying me any attention.

It was dimly lit by rows of lanterns on the walls, with two rows of rectangular tables across the space, with a path through the middle of those rows that led to a wide receptionist desk at the back of the room.

I've come here to register to become an Adventurer, but it's not as simple as just applying and then immediately being accepted, like it is in most isekai anime. The registration process is for an entrance exam, a sort of mock tournament, that's held annually.

The winner of the tournament is guaranteed a spot in the Guild whose exam they took, while others who perform well might also get selected. Fighting in a tournament really isn't my style, sneak attacks are more up my alley, but I have no choice but to play by their rules.

All this time since reincarnating and I'm yet to use my guns even once...I have a feeling that that's gonna change during this entrance exam. But honestly, I'm kinda impressed with myself that I've been able to go this long without using any of my guns.

Way to go, me.

I've frequently felt the itch to fire off some rounds when I've gone out hunting thugs, but I've managed to keep myself in check, though it hasn't been easy.

Alright, let's do this thing.

As I stepped forward and made my way towards the reception desk, one of the receptionists, a young woman, glanced up as I approached the desk.

"Yes, how can I help you?" She greeted me with a friendly smile.

"Hi, good afternoon, miss. I'm here to register for the Guild's entrance exam," I responded politely.

I can feel some curious stares being directed my way...well, I suppose that's natural, I could potentially be a new member in this Guild, it'd be weird if they weren't curious.

"I see. Your timing is good, there are only three spots left in this year's registration batch. You just need to fill out this form and you're all set. Are you able to write, or do you need assistance?" She asked me, as she took out a form and a bottle of ink.

The literacy rate is pretty low in this world, so that's a fair question. But as someone who lived in the modern era, I feel a little bit insulted, even though I know that wasn't the intent.

"Thanks, but no worries, I can write," I replied, as I took the form from her, along with a pen, one of those feather pens with the ink bottle, I forget what they're called.

Let's see, I'll just need to fill out my name, birthday, and...hm, my Magic Class. The first two aren't a problem, but, uh...what should I write in the third row?

According to Arkiela, it's not normal for a person to not have a Magic Class in this world, it's completely unheard of and considered to be impossible.

So, what should I do? Should I make something up?

No, that could come back to bite me in the ass later, there's a small note on the form that says lying while filling it out is a serious offense.

Ah, fuck it, I'll just write 'none'. I have no idea how they'll react to this, but I might as well get it out in the open...after that, whatever happens, happens. If they react poorly and it looks like I might get executed or something, I'll just kill every last person in this building and run.

There, it's all filled out.

"Oh, my, such elegant hand writing...hm?" Remarked the receptionist as I handed the form back to her, a puzzled frown appearing on her face as she glanced back up at me, "Um...you wrote 'none' for your Magic Class. I understand wanting to be secretive about your Magic, but as it clearly states on the form, lying about your Class, or even leaving the field blank, is a serious offense. Anyone caught doing so would immediately be disqualified and maybe even barred permanently from ever registering again."

"Good to know, I'll keep that in mind. But I'm not lying, I don't have a Magic Class," I replied, feeling a bit uncomfortable as I felt more stares being directed at me.

They're not actually gonna, like, execute me or whatever just for not having a Magic Class, will they? No religions have been established on Acheron Island, most people seem to believe that God exists, but no one actually worships anything.

So, there's no religious fanatics here to deem me a heretic or blasphemer or whatever, but they might still see me as some sort of freak or something and decide to get rid of me.

"Hm...then I suppose you wouldn't mind if we verified your claim with an Appraisal Skill?" She frowned, clearly not believing me.

"I mean, if that's what it takes to prove that I'm not lying, then yeah, sure," I shrugged indifferently.

"Huh? Oh, uh...okay, then. Alright, give me a minute," She responded in bemusement, looking a bit taken aback before approaching the other receptionists and talking to them.

Guess she wasn't expecting me to be okay with that, since she's convinced that I'm lying.

Arkiela can use a power similar to the Appraisal Skill, and according to her, my Mercenary's Item Box Skill shows up as simply just 'Item Box' in the eyes of the Appraisal Skill, which probably means the 'Mercenary' part of my Skill's title is unique to me.

Appraisal is one of the most common Skills in this world. When used on people, it displays their Magic Class, and it can also be used on other objects to identify them.

There's also a more rare Skill called Greater Appraisal, which is a more detailed version of Appraisal, it shows the user a person's Mana Pool and their Skills, and when used on objects, describes the properties and other relevant details of the object.

A Skill like that would've been real useful to me...this sucks, man, Appraisal is like the compulsory ability that damn near all isekai protagonists possess, at least the ones that end up in worlds that operate like video games.

Being able to get info on people with nothing but a glance at them would've been super useful, I'd know their abilities and what to expect from them in a fight.

Huh...I wonder, would anything show up if someone used one of the Appraisal Skills on my guns? Would they, for instance, be able to discern that my guns are objects from a different world?

"I apologize, but there's a bit of a problem...none of the receptionists currently on duty possesses the Appraisal Skill. One does possess the Greater Appraisal Skill, but we can't force you to reveal your Skills and Mana Pool," Said the receptionist apologetically as she walked back over.

I suppose it wouldn't make too much of a difference if they know about my Skill, but since it's the only element in my Magic System, I'd rather keep it a secret for as long as possible if I have the choice.

"Hm...what about someone besides the receptionists, I'm sure there's at least a few people in this hall right now with the Appraisal Skill," I replied, as I glanced back.

A few of them are eyeing me with perplexed looks on their faces and muttering to each other, I'm guessing they already used Appraisal on me and found out that I've been telling the truth.

"I'm sorry, but we can't do that...in order to maintain impartiality, only receptionists are allowed to verify applicants using Appraisal," She informed me, looking uncertain as to how to proceed.

I suppose they don't want to risk getting lied to, fair enough. Ugh, fine...

"Alright, then just use Greater Appraisal on me," I relented with a sigh.

"I do sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, thank you for your understanding," She replied, before glancing at another receptionist, who nodded and walked over, glancing at me.

Oh, another cat girl, sweet. And she's pretty attractive too.

"Okay, here I go...[Greater Appraisal]," She chanted, her eyes gleaming as she fixed her gaze onto me, before a bewildered look appeared on her face as she added, "Huh? What the...?"

"Hm? What is it?" Inquired the other receptionist with a frown.

"Well, um...he's telling the truth, he really doesn't have a Magic Class. But that's not all, his Mana Pool is 0, and he only has one Skill, Item B-..."

"Ahem," I cleared my throat dryly, but it was too late.

"Wait, what did she just say?"

"Holy crap, I thought my Greater Appraisal Skill was malfunctioning or something, but I guess it really is true...how is this even possible?"

"Hold on, so...he has no Magic at all?"

"And all he has is Item Box? Seriously!? Hah...hahaha, what the hell!? I didn't even know this was possible!"

"What's he thinking, registering for the entrance exam? I doubt there's anyone else who's weaker in the entire world!"

"Yeah, even my eight year old must be stronger than him! I mean, what kind of person has a Mana Pool of z...zero!? Oh, wow, I can't stop laughing, I-I can't breathe, this is hilarious!"

Huh, is it really that funny? They must really be starved for entertainment in this world.

Go on, laugh it up, assholes.

It really doesn't bother me, in fact, I welcome it. I'm perfectly fine with being underestimated, it'll give me a useful advantage come the tournament, at least in the early stages.

"You idiot!" Groaned the receptionist I'd first spoken to, smacking the cat girl receptionist on the back of the head with a look of exasperation, "It's a strict rule that we can't divulge information about applicants other than their Class, I wouldn't be surprised if you got fired for running your mouth like that! My apologies, she's new here, she didn't intend to blurt all that out."

Gotta say, I'm impressed by how professional she is, especially in this world. I can tell that she's pretty perplexed by this whole thing, but for the most part, she's maintaining her composure and treating me the same as she did before my abilities were revealed.

Meanwhile, some of the other receptionists are whispering amongst themselves while looking at me. But this one's staying professional, I can appreciate that. Hm, I should take this chance...

"Y-yeah, I'm really sorry," Apologized the cat girl receptionist sheepishly.

"Don't worry about it, it's fine, no big deal. Anyway, I'd like to finish up my registration now, if that's okay," I replied with a smile.

One thing I learnt during my time as a mercenary in my previous life is that forming connections and associations can be extremely useful, I had more than a few handy contacts that I made use of.

Getting in the good graces of these receptionists could be quite beneficial to me in the future, it'd be a waste to pass up on the opportunity to make a good impression.

"Yes, of course. But, are you sure you want to register? I don't mean to offend, but with your lack of Magic..."

"Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. I'm sure about this, so if you would," I prompted her in response.

"Hah, did you hear that?"

"How confident...pfft, or should I say delusional? This is just ridiculous!"

"Poor kid's in for a rude awakening."

"Yeah, it's gonna be brutal!"

I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when I shatter their expectations. Hm, careful, don't wanna jinx myself.

As a great man once said, I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious. Micheal Scott, what a fucking legend.

"Okay, you just need to sign this and your registration will be complete," The receptionist informed me, as she gave me another form.

"What is it?" I asked her, as I took it from her and skimmed through the text.

Ah, one of these...

"It's a waiver, stating that the Guild will not be held responsible for any injuries you may sustain during the entrance exam. This is your last chance to reconsider, it's not unusual for one or two applicants to be killed during the exam," She warned me.

"Oh? So what you're saying is...I won't get in any trouble or be disqualified if I kill another participant?" I responded, feeling pretty encouraged, ignoring the further ridicule that comment prompted from the Adventurers behind me.

"Huh? Well, no, but-..."

"Great!" I grinned gleefully, signing the bottom of the form and handing it back to her.

"O-okay, then, uh...ahem, your registration is complete now. The exam will be held in a month from now, on the 2nd of December. You will need to arrive here at the Astaroth Guild by 8 AM in the morning, arriving late could see you disqualified. Here, this note will serve as proof of your status as an applicant, you won't be allowed to participate if you forget to bring it or lose it," She explained, as she handed me a slip of paper.

"Definitely won't be a problem," I remarked, quietly chanting to open one of my Item Box Slots and placing the slip inside of it, before shutting the slot and adding, "Alright, thank you very much for your help, miss, I appreciate it. I'll take my leave now."

"Understood, good luck with your preparations for the exam," She replied with a smile.

As I nodded politely in response, I then turned around and headed for the exit, ignoring the jeers and taunts directed at me from the Adventurers. Most of them look like they're in their late twenties to early or mid thirties...kinda weird that grown-ass men and women are taking so much pleasure in ridiculing a kid.

Well, to be fair, the legal adult age in this world is fifteen, though you can apply to register in a Guild after you turn thirteen. Still though, this is kinda pathetic of them.

"Surprised you didn't knock any heads in there," Said Arkiela, as I walked out of the Guild and began heading back.

Losing my cool and lashing out wouldn't have been a good way of going about it...I'd much rather stun them into silence and shut them up at the entrance exam, that seems like the more satisfying and rewarding option.

And besides, I'd been expecting something like this to begin with, so I was prepared to deal with it. I mean, having no Magic Class, zero Mana and just the one Skill, of course they're going to make fun of someone who registers to become an Adventurer while being so lacking in Magic abilities.

Magic Classes are classified into three main categories, Ordinary, Advanced and Arcane, each of which are further split into the subcategories of Attack and Support. Ordinary Classes are the most common ones, the majority of people in this world possess one of the Ordinary Classes.

Ordinary Attack Classes include Fire Magic, Water Magic, Earth Magic, Wind Magic and Solar Magic, while Ordinary Support Classes include Recovery Magic, Defense Magic, Trap Magic, Teleportation Magic and Taming Magic.

Then there's the Advanced Attack Classes, which include Lightning Magic, Plasma Magic, Sound Magic, Air Magic, Ice Magic, Plant Magic and Explosion Magic.

Next, there's the Advanced Support Classes, which include Potion Magic, Illusion Magic, Barrier Magic, Spatial Magic, Shadow Magic and Summoning Magic.

Advanced Classes are a lot rarer than Ordinary Classes, so people who possess Advanced Classes are typically assumed to be more powerful. But according to Arkiela, that's not actually the case.

For instance, someone who wields Fire Magic could defeat someone with, say, Lightning Magic, there's far more to a person's ability level than the rarity of their Class. In other words, Advanced Classes aren't necessarily more powerful than Ordinary Classes.

Well, there are exceptions. Take Wind Magic and Air Magic, for instance...the latter is literally just a more versatile version of the former, Air Magic users can do everything Wind Magic users can, plus more.

And then, there's the Arcane Classes.

These are extremely, extremely rare, and often unusual, types of Magic, and at any given point, only one person can possess one particular Arcane Class. Take Arkiela's Class, Destruction Magic.

It's an Arcane Magic Class, and for as long as she's in this world, no one else can possess that Class, not until she dies or goes back to the Divine Realm, whichever comes first.

Skills are also split into Ordinary and Advanced, and unlike Classes, Advanced Skills actually are more powerful than Ordinary Skills. Using the example of the Appraisal Skills, for instance, regular Appraisal is an Ordinary Skill, while Greater Appraisal is an Advanced Skill.

Like Classes, Skills are also further split, into Active and Passive Skills. The Appraisal Skills are both Active Skills, and an example of a Passive Skill is Heat Resistance, which is self-explanatory.

My Mercenary's Item Box is an Active Skill, but it's nothing like any known, existing Skills...for one thing, the leveling up element of my Skill is something that doesn't exist in this world, there's no such thing as EXP as far as everyone else is concerned.

So, while I possess a video game-esque Magic System, no one else does, except maybe other people who, like me, have reincarnated into this world.

Normally, neither a person's Magic Class or their Skills can be leveled up or upgraded, that's simply not a concept in this world.

So, how come my Skill has that function? Well, not that I'm complaining, just curious.

The normal Item Box Skill in this world is an Ordinary Active Skill, and there's also the Advanced Active Skill called Inventory.

But my Mercenary's Item Box doesn't really fit the descriptions of either, there are several fundamental differences, the most significant of which is the leveling up aspect.

So I considered the possibility of it being an Arcane Skill and brought it up to Arkiela, but while Arcane Classes are a thing, Arcane Skills aren't.

Another thing that's strange about my Skill is the fact that I can use it at all. After all, I have no Mana whatsoever, not a single drop. Most Skills consume a very minimal amount of Mana, but they do still need Mana to be used. I have none, but I can still use my Skill.

Oh, well, whatever.

It is what it is, I don't really need to fully understand exactly how it works. It's not like I have a way of finding that out in the first place, so there's no point in wasting energy thinking about it.

My Magic System is an anomaly in this world, I was genuinely afraid that I'd be (perse/exe)cuted for being some kind of Magical abomination.

That's another reason why I didn't particularly mind being ridiculed by those Adventurers, it certainly beats the alternative worst case scenario.

They probably see me more as being disabled, which is pretty messed up when you think back to how much they were mocking me.

But it's understandable...before my old world entered the 'woke' era, people with disabilities were often made fun of. Remember how commonly the word 'retard' was used in the early 2000s before it became taboo to say?

And I had a pretty bad deformity myself, I got lucky in that I wasn't excessively bullied for it, but it's not like no one ever made fun of my appearance ever, and it wasn't a nice feeling, to put it lightly.

My point is, it's quite the relief that the people here simply mocked my Magical disability instead of being freaked out by it.

Anyway, I should head back now.

I've got just about enough money left for the carriage ride back to Bael Town, and it's starting to get dark, so time to go. I'll leave the orphanage for good and move to this city maybe a week before the exam is set to take place.

Honestly, that's been long overdue, the only reason I haven't already moved out is because I'd struggle to afford to live on my own in an inn or an apartment.

Well, I won't have to live there for much longer, it's about damn time I finally get out of that dump...

...

...

"...-ke up. Hey, wake up, shithead. We're almost back in town," Came Arkiela's voice, as I let out a groan and drowsily opened my eyes.

"Ugh, shut up, you annoying little bitch," I muttered irritably, yawning as I sat up and rubbed my eyes.

"You're so rude! Stop calling me a bitch all the time, shithead," She huffed indignantly.

"No."

"Tch, asshole."

Hm, looks like the sun is starting to set. It'll definitely be dark by the time I get back at the orphanage. Well, it's not like it matters.

Since I've been keeping everyone in the orphanage at arms length and made a conscious effort to avoid getting too familiar with any of them, no one really says anything anymore even if they notice that I'm away from the place for a while.

Even that cat girl, who was kinda excessively friendly towards me for the first couple of years, doesn't try talking to me nearly as often as she used to.

And in a couple of weeks or so, I'll probably never see any of them again. It's not just the orphanage that I'm eager to leave, I'm also looking forward to getting out of this shithole of a town.

Anyway, the carriage soon came to a halt and I hopped out, before making my way through the town in the direction of the orphanage. The orphanage is located on the very outskirts of the town, well away from the rest of the buildings, so it's a pretty long walk to get there.

It's barely within the boundaries of the town, near a grove of woods, where I first woke up in this world. Those woods are reasonably safe by this world's standards, there isn't anything particularly dangerous in there. I should know, I've been training there constantly for the last eight years.

Anyway, I can't wait to see the last of this dump of a town full of scum and crime. Astaroth City, where the Guild I went to today is located, was much nicer in comparison. Which honestly, really isn't saying much.

Hm?

"Hey, get off," I frowned as Arkiela sat on my shoulder, before I swatted her off, as the orphanage finally came into sight, a good half hour or so after the carriage dropped me off.

"Come on, I don't even weigh anything while I'm in this state," She grumbled with an annoyed pout.

"Doesn't mean I'm gonna let you sit on me, you bitch. I hate you, remember?" I pointed out wryly, before pausing as I noticed a large horse-drawn cart parked outside the orphanage...well, the animals pulling it were Unicorns, not regular horses since those don't exist on this island, but I guess it doesn't really matter, Unicorns are just horses with horns, potayto potahto.

Well, okay, there is another difference...when threatened, they can also fire out these beams from their horns that make you nauseous if you get hit by it, but domesticated Unicorns rarely ever use that ability.

More importantly, something's off here...the doors of the orphanage have been left wide open, and that's never the case because sand and dust blows in through the entrance...yeah, something isn't right.

I began silently making my way around the building, taking out my grappling hook and pointing it up towards the roof of the building.

"Uh, what are you doing?"

"Shut up, bitch. Don't talk to me, you voice is annoying."

"Asshole."

I then fired the grappling hook up at the roof, the anchor latching onto the edge of the roof. I gave it a couple of firm tugs to make sure it was secure, before pressing the button to retract the wire, rapidly pulling myself up towards the roof.

I grabbed onto the edge and climbed up onto the roof, unhooking the anchor from the roof and putting the grappling hook back into my Item Box. I then slowly made my way across the roof, pausing briefly as I heard a muffled cry echoing out from inside the building.

I continued towards a window just under the roof, before hanging my upper body down from the roof and peering into the window, giving it a slight push to crack it open so that I can more clearly hear and see what was happ-...oh, shit.

"Wow, they're getting massacred," Remarked Arkiela, as she peeked in through the slightly open window.

A group of men were down there, laughing with looks of enjoyment on their faces. And all around them, were the corpses of the other kids. Oh, there's the old man, the orphanage director. He's been killed too.

A few people are still alive, though only the older girls, including the cat girl, as well as one of the volunteers who'd been helping out at the orphanage, a young woman.

She's being raped by two of the men, and the rest of the men have cornered or pinned down the other girls who are still alive.

"You aren't gonna save them?" Inquired Arkiela with a raised eyebrow, a despaired scream ringing out as one of the men tore at a girl's clothes.

Huh? What's she talking about?

"And why would I do that? I mean, really...what do I stand to gain by doing so?" I responded indifferently.
