Very early the following morning, as promised, Carol made her way to her son's house. Her plans were very simple. She wanted to first settle the rift between the couple before dealing with the intruder.
She was ushered into Richmond's magnificent home by his loyal and dutiful head housekeeper, Mary.
"Good morning, Mrs Gibson." Mary curtsied before her boss's mother, smiling politely.
"Where is my son, and his wife-to-be?" Carol asked dryly, taking off her coat and pushing it into Mary's open hands.
"They are still upstairs, ma'am," Mary replied while taking Carol's handbag too. "Shall I go get them?"
"No! You may leave." Carol shooed Mary like an annoying bug, before quietly climbing upstairs, in the direction of her son's bedroom.
When she got to Richmond's bedroom, she knocked twice on the door before pushing it slightly open without getting any instruction from inside.
