Chapter 4 - Nervousness

Luther walked to his left as he spotted a nameplate with a blue background in a landscape of complete white color painted on the walls, and white marble covering the floor directed him to move towards the next section of the building where the elevators were located. Then he turned right, arriving in front of two elevators.

The elevators were also painted white, which made them look as if they wanted to blend with the walls. It would have been hard to notice them without the calling button and the nameplate near the reception. The atmosphere around the lift was dead silent. With the absence of people, which was common in Genesis Lab City, the section appeared lifeless and silent as if no soul had treaded through the path for years.

Luther swiftly summoned an elevator, and within 5 seconds, it arrived. Selecting the 49th floor, where his father's office was situated, he ascended. The lift boasted state-of-the-art features, including open windows offering a clear view of the cityscape outside. However, the locality near Genesis City Lab may have been surrounded by much taller buildings at least twice its size but it was always quiet because of the tight security given its importance to the stable functioning of the city.

He felt very nervous about this meeting with his father. It had been a whole year since they last saw each other, and the meeting coincided with his father's birthday. For his father's present, he held a modified watch which he had crafted after years of dedicated research and hard work. This timepiece stood as his most cherished possession, second only to his title as the top gamer in Genesis City.

Luther realised he had started shaking due to his nervousness and immediately tried to calm himself. Of course, he shifted his mind towards games, nothing else could calm him down.

"After going through many games that have been released within the last 10 months, I have shortlisted Invasion and Monster Hunt. Both games have such compelling storytelling that I cannot choose between them. I wish I could play both of the games. Oh, it would be best if my mind could be split into many parts so I could use each part of the mind to play a game. That would be so cool. But, even after rapid evolution in human genes that has allowed people to achieve non-human abilities, the brain remains the most complicated part of the human body. A lot has been discovered but more than that is still not known.

Maybe Father would know more about this. I should try asking him." The nervousness he was trying to rid himself of came back stronger than ever. But before he could gather his thoughts, the elevator chimed, signalling his arrival on the 49th floor.

Once he left the elevator, he entered the lobby of the 49th floor which was divided into 4 parts. The four paths led to the offices of four of the greatest scientists in Genesis City with the highest contribution to gene manipulation discovery. He took a left and then another left appearing near a large entrance. His most dreaded moment was upon him and his nervousness reached its peak. He felt frozen in place due to all of his nervousness.

"Ara, is that Luther standing there?"

The frozen Luther snapped his neck sideways towards the voice, it belonged to Miss Sakura, his father's PA.

"Yes, I am Luther. Good evening, Miss Sakura."

To Luther's bad luck, Miss Sakura got up from her seat to pat him on his head like he was still a kid and failed miserably. What did she expect? She was just 152 centimetres while he was 175. The difference was too big.

"No way, it's just been a year since I last saw you but have grown so tall. Last time you were a few centimeters taller than me but now you are as tall as a tree. " After failing to pat him, she simply smacked his back. Luther inwardly winced, her smack had a lot of punch. He cursed, "Though petite, her strength is surprising. I often ponder her unique training regimen. I vividly remember that one time when she became my caretaker for a day. She'd pinch my cheeks tightly, making me cry, but she wouldn't stop, her twisted mind thought I liked it. That day was one of the worst days of my life. If she ever had a child then they are doomed."

"Miss Sakura, may I enter the office and meet father?"

Miss Sakura regained her business attitude at the mention of his father, "Sir Hrithik is currently not in his office. His hold-up in a meeting. But," She scanned a device in her hand before she spoke again, "Luther, you came at the right time. Sir Hrithik should be back in a few minutes."

"Then, may I wait inside his office?"

"Yes, you can. But, why don't you talk to me a bit more?"

"Uhm.." "Ping", a notification sound flared up attracting Miss Sakura's attention. "Oh, it seems I have some immediate work to do. You better wait in the office."

"Yes." Luther was relieved to be left alone. He wasn't used to talking in the real world or the game world. Staying with someone as boisterous as Miss Sakura was torture for him. He had always wondered why his father chose her as his PA. But, maybe it was because of her nature, that he had chosen her. Though his father was good at communication, Hrithik Rawat was the smoothest talker Luther had ever come across. When he spoke, others couldn't help but pay attention to him. It was instinctive, and they couldn't stop themselves. A surprising trait for a scientist.

He sat on the guest chair, calming down. This whole task of meeting his father was too much for him to bear. His sole motivation to proceed lay in the hope that his project would impress his father enough to secure the necessary funds. After all, he was a rich man so couldn't he support his son for a valid cause?
