Chapter 20 - Another Day in the Wilderness

The next day started with the piercing sound of the alarm, slicing through the quiet morning air.

Trisha stirred from her slumber, her eyes blinking away the remnants of sleep. The sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a gentle glow across the room.

With a yawn and a stretch, Trisha reluctantly peeled herself from the comfort of her bed. "Still in the wilderness," she muttered.

As Trisha opened the windows, she was greeted by a stunning view. The scenery unfolded like a painting, with vibrant flowers dotting the landscape, the serene beach stretching out, and hills rolling in the distance. The natural beauty outside served as a picturesque backdrop to the challenges of the day ahead.

The atmosphere outside was incredibly serene, with a gentle breeze carrying the scent of flowers, the distant sound of waves crashing against the shore, and the melodic chirping of birds overhead. It created a tranquil ambiance that offered a brief escape from the upcoming hustle and bustle of the day, wrapping her in a soothing embrace of nature.

Taking a moment to soak in the beauty, Trisha rested her arms by the window sill, inhaling the crisp, refreshing air. With each breath, she felt the serenity of the surroundings seep into her being. The rhythmic inhale and exhale became a moment of quiet reflection.

A smile effortlessly found its way to her face as she stood there. "No matter what comes my way, I won't give up," she affirmed, embracing the determination that fueled her spirit.

A few minutes later, Trisha left the house after exchanging a polite greeting with Aunt Gwen. Stepping into the fresh air, she took a moment to collect herself before heading towards the project site.

Deciding to take matters into her own hands, Trisha opted for a walk to the project site rather than having Dashiell pick her up. It reflected a newfound independence and a desire to deal with her challenges on her own terms.

With each step, she embraced the solitude and the opportunity to gather her thoughts before diving into the day's tasks.

After 15 minutes of walking with steady steps, Trisha passed through the gate of the site with a genuine smile, exchanging greetings with every worker she passed.

She rocked a laid-back look that morning, sporting a chill combo of a brown, folded long-sleeve blouse and black chinos pants. Topped it off with some black sneakers for that extra laid-back touch. It might have been simple, but it turned heads among the workers. After all, it's not every day they see a beautiful young woman stepping into their "men's world."

A mechanic working on a jeep had his jaw drop as he saw Trisha casually passing by. The unexpected sight of a woman in the midst of their rugged workspace left him momentarily stunned.

"Did you see that?" he said. "A lady just walked by like she owns the place."

"No way! Here? In our project? What's she doing here?" said another mechanic who was working with the lubricant.

"Beats me, but I've never seen anything like it. Maybe things are changing around here," the first mechanic said.

An old mechanic happened to overhear their chat, saying, "Hey, you two. Heard about her? That lady's not just any visitor. She's the project manager from the head office."

"Seriously? A project manager?" The first mechanic said. "Well, that explains the confidence. We've got someone important in the site."

Walking into the office, Trisha threw a casual greeting at Jazlyn. "Good morning, Jazlyn! How's it going this morning?"

Jazlyn looked up from her desk with a grin. "Good morning. Not bad, Miss Lockhart. Ready to tackle another day on this wild project?"

"Absolutely. Any updates I should know about?"

"Well, you know, as usual. Just keeping things interesting."

Trisha raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "The usual, huh? You're not holding out on me, are you? And by the way, have you seen Dashiell around this morning?"

"Oh, you know, just the usual chaos and mischief," Jazlyn replied. "And as for Dashiell, he's off to the site with the boys. Probably conjuring up some more plans to keep us on our toes."

"Got it. Thanks," Trisha nodded and then headed off to catch up with Dashiell.

Jazlyn's eyes widened, and a subtle smirk played on her lips as she watched Trisha rushing about. She was trying to act cool, but a bit of jealousy was peeking through.

That city woman really put her on edge, especially seeing her getting all cozy with Dashiell, her long-time crush. It definitely stirred up some uncomfortable feelings.

Trisha quickly made her way through a bunch of guys nonchalantly hanging out by the old banyan tree. It seemed like a regular sight to catch them idling or just chilling around at this hour.

With a friendly tap on the shoulder, she got the attention of the driver, a dude named Jake Miller, leaning against the jeep.

"Hey, Jake! Mind giving me a lift? I need to catch up with Dashiell."

Jake flashed a grin, nodding. "Sure thing, hop in! We'll catch up to him in no time."

Once they hopped in the jeep, Jake maneuvered the vehicle onto the rugged terrain, hitting the hard road. Their journey continued along the bumpy, winding path through the construction site, kicking up dust in its wake.

Trisha felt a wave of sickness and nausea wash over her as the jeep bounced along the rough terrain. Her stomach churned, and she clutched onto the seat, trying to steady herself against the uneasy sensation.

As soon as the car came to a halt in the woods, Trisha found herself unable to stand any longer. Overwhelmed by the queasiness, she leaned out of the car and threw up, the nausea finally getting the better of her.

Fortunately, she hadn't eaten anything that morning, just sipped on a cup of coffee. Her stomach was basically empty, which probably spared her from an even messier situation.

Jake furrowed his brow with concern as he noticed her looking unwell. "Hey, everything okay? That ride was a bit wild, huh?" With a hint of pride in his voice, he added, "But, you know, not everyone can handle my off-road skills. It's a wild terrain out here."

Wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, she managed a weak grin. "Yeah, just got a bit motion sick. I'll survive. Thanks for the ride, Jake."

Stepping down from the jeep, Trisha muttered under her breath, cursing him for his boastful pride. In her mind, she couldn't help but think, "Great, just what I need–a showoff driver on a bumpy road!"

As she stepped onto the loose ground, her foot slipped, causing her to lose balance. She did this awkward little dance, arms flailing for a moment, before regaining her balance. It was one of those cringe-worthy moments where she felt the ground was playing a prank on her. How she wished the ground could just be a bit more cooperative.
