Hundred and twenty-one. The DNA test results
Doctor Maya brought the check-up to an end after she gave Monalissa some instructions on how to carry herself.
"You improved a little today but, you can't do strenuous things, at all" Doctor Maya pointed out.
"Okay doctor" Monalissa replied.
"Also, you can now leave the bed or the room, you're free to walk around. Staying huddled up in here isn't really a good thing for you. So, you can go out, get some air and do the things you want to do" Doctor Maya told her.
Monalissa nodded and smiled a little. "Thank you doctor. I will do all that you have instructed".
Doctor Maya gave her a gentle pat on the back, before leaving the room. The moment she got out, Ezekiel was standing in front of the door, his arms folded in front of his chest, his face cold and usual.
"Good day Mr Don" she greeted with a slight bow.
"Mm. Come with me to my study" he ordered.
"Yes sir" he said.
Few minutes later, the duo were settled in Ezekiel's study, with the latter seated behind his desk and Doctor Maya seated opposite him.
"How is she?" he asked.
"She's doing well. Surprisingly, she's responding to treatment very fast. It's a rare sight for women who experienced miscarriage to get through so fast. It's a really painful situation for them" Doctor Maya explained.
Ezekiel nodded. "Okay".
"I gave her medications, different from the one I prescribed yesterday. It's fine, she can take the two at once" she instructed.
"Okay doctor. Uhh, Doctor Maya..."
"Yes sir?"
"About her memories, the ones that she isn't remembering, what do I do about it?" Ezekiel asked.
Doctor Maya looked at him for a while. "Mr Don, you know that amnesia is a serious and delicate element, and is quite challenging. You don't really have to push her that much" she said.
"But, it's as though the memory is dormant. It's like, she doesn't even want to remember it" Ezekiel said.
"Have she ever said things that were connected to the past or reacted to things? Except the design on your sofas, has there been any other outburst?" Doctor Maya asked.
"Once, when she was in the hospital during her poisoning treatment, she mentioned our name combination. Zelissa" he explained.
"Then, use it. The name combo. You could get her a jewelry that has the name, or a book, or diary or anything that's her taste. Get those things for her with the name combo engraved on it" she advised.
"Also" Ezekiel continued, "she was drowning before she was found by an old man named Silas. Is it okay to invite him over?" Ezekiel asked.
"That's a great point. Tell him to come with anything that might strike a memory. If there's something you both might have shared when young, like an accessory, put it on. It could be of help" she explained.
Ezekiel nodded, satisfied at Doctor Maya's words. He became determined to do as she had instructed.
After their discussion, the doctor left and Ezekiel called Kim over. Kim arrived in no time, and went over to the study.
"Good day Boss" he greeted and bowed.
"Yes. Kim, I want you to invite Mr Silas over" he said.
Kim looked at him. "Boss?"
"I need Monalissa to regain her memories. She doesn't remember me yet, to her, I'm still the man who enslaved her and made her life miserable. Fate can be really cruel" Ezekiel lamented.
"Yes Boss".
"This evening. I want him here" Ezekiel instructed.
"Yes Boss".
"You may leave".
"Not yet Boss" Kim said. "I have the results on the DNA test" Kim said, placing an envelope on the desk.
Ezekiel took it and opened it. He checked the percentage of the relationship between him and the child which Monalissa had lost. A glaring ninety-nine point nine percent rested on the paper causing his heart to plummet into his stomach. He was shocked to the marrows and couldn't react for a while. Guilt overwhelmed him. This was because he didn't accept that child. Though it seemed like he did, he did so reluctantly. He suddenly felt like a failure. He failed to recognize Monalissa as Lily, and failed to recognize his own child. How much of a bastard was he? And now, the child was gone. This fueled his anger and hate for Elijah. The latter knew that the child belonged to him, that was why he had such nerve to pull that stunt, ripping his child off him.
"Boss?" Kim called him. The silence was a little too suffocating.
"Kim, do you think I'm such a failure?" Ezekiel asked.
Kim was thrown off balance. But, he quickly collected himself and replied. "Not true Boss. You're an outstanding man" Kim praised.
"Then why? Why couldn't I recognize her when I saw her? Why couldn't I recognize the child as mine? Even my enemy did know the child was mine, but I was the only one who didn't. I believed Monalissa reluctantly because I didn't want her to feel sad. But I didn't accept the child. What kind of a man does that? Am I a coward?" Ezekiel was heartbroken and couldn't stop doubting himself.
"No Boss. Please don't say that. It's not your fault. Just calm down" Kim said, hoping he had said the right words.
The door to the study opens and a little head poked in. It was Monalissa. Her eyes met Ezekiel's down casted ones. She immediately knew that something was up.
"Master" she called him.
"Come on in Monalissa" he said.
Monalissa walked in, pulling the IV drip stand with her. Doctor Maya had left her with this to enable her move around.
Kim took this as his cue and left. It was just the two of them inside the study.
"What's wrong?" Monalissa asked, her heart shaken at Ezekiel's appearance. His face looked forlon as though he was going through some pain that she didn't know of. Her eyes darted to the paper that was in his hand.
"Can I see that?" she requested. Circling the desk, she came to stand beside Ezekiel who gave her the paper. Monalissa took it and looked it over. Tears gathered in her eyes when she saw the paper. This reminded her immediately of her lost child. Ezekiel was the father. She felt really bad for not protecting the child and losing it so soon.
"I'm sorry" she said, her voice a bit choked.
Ezekiel looked at her. "What?"
"I could have protected it. Our child. But, I just lost it, carelessly. It was your child, your blood. How could I have been so clueless?" She lamented, breaking into tears.
Ezekiel felt suffocated. He felt as though his heart was being picked by millions of needles simultaneously as he watched her cry. She was even blaming herself for the mishap, and he couldn't feel more bad. He stood and took her in his arms, stroking her gently.
"Don't beat yourself up Walker. Please don't. It's all my fault for not protecting you both. For not even accepting the child in the first place".
"Walker" Ezekiel continued. "I'm really sorry for not believing you".
"It's okay. It's fine" she said with a sniff.
