Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Skeleton Guardians of the Cursed Crypt

[ Entering Cursed Crypt Dungeon. Difficulty: E ]

Orion, Jaxon, and Mira ventured cautiously into the Cursed Crypt, its eerie stillness punctuated only by their own footsteps. The dim torchlight cast a ghostly pallor over the ancient walls, creating an atmosphere ripe with anticipation and danger.

As they navigated the narrow passageways, they encountered their first challenge — skeletal guardians, emerging from the shadows with a chilling clatter. Orion, a dual dagger wielder, readied his weapons, their blades gleaming faintly in the torchlight. The guardians, armed with rusted blades and shields, advanced towards them with an unnerving rattling of bones.

In the ensuing battle, Orion's agility came to the fore. He darted in and out of the guardians' reach, his daggers finding weak spots in their brittle armor. Each precise strike brought down a guardian, their bones clattering to the ground in a heap.

Jaxon, armed with dual axes, engaged the guardians with a ferocity that somewhat offset his disadvantage in the tight space. His movements, though less fluid than Orion's, were effective, hacking through the guardians with raw power.

Mira, ever watchful, stayed at a safe distance, ready to step in with her healing abilities if the need arose.

The skirmishes grew more intense as they delved deeper into the crypt. In a larger chamber, they faced a third wave of guardians. These were more daunting, armed with better-preserved weapons and moving with a semblance of battle-hardened skill.

Orion, adapting to the increased challenge, maneuvered with swift, calculated strikes. His daggers whirled in a deadly dance, bringing down guardian after guardian. Jaxon, despite the challenging environment for his axes, fought with determined resilience.

With the defeat of the last skeleton in this group, Orion's system chimed with a familiar notification — he had leveled up. The feeling of achievement was palpable. The level up granted him two free stat points, which he knew he needed to allocate wisely for his continued growth as an awakener.

[ Level Up: Level 4 Achieved ]

With this new achievement under their belts, Orion, Jaxon, and Mira braced themselves to venture further into the depths of the crypt, where unknown challenges awaited. The skeletal guardians were just the beginning, and the trio was determined to face whatever lay ahead in the shadowy recesses of the Cursed Crypt.

Continuing their journey through the Cursed Crypt, Orion, Jaxon, and Mira felt a shift in the atmosphere as they ventured deeper. The air grew colder, and a sense of unease settled over them. The narrow corridors and ancient walls seemed to whisper secrets of a long and troubled past.

As they turned into a vast chamber, they were met with a sight that sent chills down their spines. Ghostly figures, translucent and ethereal, drifted silently through the walls and floors. Their faces were twisted in expressions of sorrow and pain, remnants of lives long lost to the crypt.

Orion instinctively reached for his daggers, but he hesitated, realizing the futility of physical weapons against these spectral beings. Jaxon, gripping his axes tightly, shared a look of concern with Orion. Mira, her eyes wide with apprehension, stayed close behind them.

One of the ghosts drifted toward them, its form passing through the stone as if it were air. Orion stepped forward, daggers at the ready, but as he swung, his blades passed harmlessly through the ghost. A coldness enveloped him as the ghost moved through his body, leaving a feeling of deep melancholy in its wake.

"It's no use," Orion said, frustration in his voice. "Our weapons can't touch them."

Jaxon swung his axes in a wide arc, but like Orion's daggers, they had no effect on the ghosts. "We can't fight what we can't hit," he growled, stepping back.

Mira, her voice tinged with urgency, suggested, "We need to get out of here. We're not equipped to handle ghosts."

As more ghosts began to converge on them, their mournful faces a haunting reminder of their fate, the trio knew they had to retreat. They turned and hurried back through the corridors, the eerie wails of the ghosts echoing behind them.

Once safely outside the crypt, they paused to catch their breath. The reality of their situation was clear: they were unprepared for the spectral inhabitants of the Cursed Crypt.

"We need to find a way to deal with these ghosts," Orion said, his voice tinged with frustration but underscored by a firm resolve. The existence of ghosts in the Cursed Crypt was common knowledge; after all, it was a publicly known E-rank dungeon. His unpreparedness was a stark reminder that power and equipment alone were insufficient; information and strategy were equally crucial.

Jaxon, wiping the sweat from his brow, nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we need something that can hit those spirits. Going in blind was a mistake."

Mira, looking thoughtful, added, "Information is key. We should research more before attempting this again."

Orion realized that completing his quest in the Cursed Crypt would require a new approach. He needed a skill, weapon, or some other equipment capable of affecting ethereal beings like ghosts. But there was a problem: his finances. After a quick check, he noted he only had about 400 credits — not nearly enough for the kind of specialized gear or skills he needed. His Store System offered options, but nothing within his current budget.

The thought of asking his grandfather, Alexander, for financial help crossed his mind. But he quickly dismissed it. Orion was determined to walk this path on his own, at least for now. He didn't want to rely on his grandfather's support so early in his journey as an awakener.

Turning his attention to the immediate issue of funds, Orion decided to sell the items he had collected from the skeletons. He approached a stall near the dungeon entrance, where he exchanged the rusty daggers, bone dust, and ancient bone fragments. The vendor, accustomed to dealing with such items, offered him a little over 100 credits for the lot. It wasn't much, but every bit helped. With this sale, his total funds came up to 500 credits.

After parting ways with Jaxon and Mira, who agreed to regroup later with any useful information they might find, Orion opened his system status window to review his progress:
