Chapter 8 - Is it my fault

The air in the room hung heavy with tension as no one dared to intervene and try to stop them from leaving. James, betrayed by his own flesh and blood, stood stunned, disappointment engraved on his face. His closest kin had forsaken him, leaving him isolated in the tempest of familial betrayal. On the flip side, Catherine rejoiced in the unfolding drama. With James out of the picture, taking over the company seemed like child's play to her. "I never anticipated this day arriving so soon," Catherine mused, floating atop her own world, hardhearted to the betrayal of her own blood.

As Lorain packed her belongings, a heavy sadness settled over her. The memories held within these walls were now marked with betrayal. She couldn't shake the knowledge that her family concealed desires to seize her father's legacy. The very person who gave them all a roof to live in. Her life unravelled before her. She had lost everything after the betrayal, her boyfriend, her best friend, her company, her home and now was tainted by the disdain of the public. Her life was meaningless now.

 **************Chris's mansion*****************

Chris, seething with anger, confronted Jane about Lorain's scandalous photos circulating on the internet. "This is all your doing," he accused, his voice a solid foundation of rage. However, he couldn't understand why would Lorain stooping to such lows, and he suspected Jane's hand in this scandalous event.

"Why wouldn't she? Desperation to save her precious father's company could drive anyone to such lengths," Jane retorted, indifferent to Chris's escalating fury. "Lorain would never," he insisted, refusing to yield.

"Why do you even care if she's capable or not Is it possible you've fallen for her, unable to endure her public humiliation? ha ain't that funny?"

"Of course not, I'm just saying since I have been with her for three years, so I understand her better than anyone," he deflected. Chris, torn between loyalty and realization, couldn't deny his feelings for Lorain. He had fallen for her kindness, warmth, and captivating smile. Yet, he dared not admit it to Jane.

" Is it my fault that even her family wishes ill upon her,"

As Jane callously dismissed Chris's concern, he was left paralyzed staring into space. Jane's words fuelled the flames of his rage.

Later, in a flashback, Jane forced Chris into a nefarious plan. "Please do it for me. It will bring me enormous joy," she insisted, pushing him to date Lorain and later break her heart and taking everything from her. Chris, conflicted, succumbed to Jane's manipulation, unaware of the pain that awaited Lorain.

Reflecting on his actions, Chris sighed, acknowledging that agreeing to betray Lorain and causing her pain was the gravest mistake of his life and he will never forgive himself for that. And why to why did Jane odder him to commit such evilness, till this day he doesn't know why. Despite the betrayal, he realized that Lorain was the best thing that ever happened to him. Love for her lingered, and he was determined to win her back. It was just a matter of time.

Meanwhile, Lorain, fuelled by anger, confronted her mother about the decision to leave "Why did you agree to dad's decision? you know very well that they have eyes on dad's company. After the two of you are gone, it won't be difficult for them to execute their shameless schemes." Mary sighed, having tried in vain to talk him into realisation the gravity of his decision to leave. James, resolute in his choice, dismissed the potential threats. "They can have it," he declared, unyielding. "And as long as I haven't signed any papers the company is still mine, and it was high time we left that house it was never a home from the start." James sighed.
