The Next Morning
When Chen Mumu woke up, the other side of the bed was already empty. The spot where Xu Jingli had lain was slightly cool, telling her that he had left a while ago. She blinked sleepily, turning her head toward the bedside table, where a small note sat neatly atop it.
Had to go to the office. Eat breakfast.
The message was simple, just like him.
Chen Mumu rubbed her eyes, stifling a yawn as she slowly got up. Her body still ached slightly from exhaustion, but she forced herself out of bed and made her way to the kitchen for a glass of water.
When she stepped inside, she stopped.
On the counter, a plate of toast sat waiting for her, accompanied by a warm glass of milk.
Her heart warmed slightly. He had made breakfast for her.
But the moment she actually looked at the toast, her fingers twitched.
Even at a glance, she could see tiny shards of eggshell sticking out of the bread.
Her lips pressed together.
