Chapter 96 - Chapter 96 - The Darkness Within

In a surprising turn of events, the cavern of darkness became a crucible for Von's transformation as the limitations in his studies faded away, and his affinity for aimamancy reached unforeseen heights. Aimamancy resonated with Von at such a profound level, and the lines between student and master blurred. The magical energies of blood responded to his will with a fluidity and precision even Hellyne found herself surprised.

With a growing fascination Hellyne observed Von's mastery of blood magic eclipsing any expectations. His adaptation of blood regeneration to enhance his healing abilities showcased a level of innovation catching even the experienced Hellyne off guard.

Von's proficiency in hemomancy, the manipulation of blood, went beyond the typical skills of a novice blood mage. With precision and control, drawing from the crafting he learned while using earth magic, he crafted intricate constructs from his own blood and blood of others proving his great connection with the arcane art.

However, what truly astonished Hellyne was Von's spontaneous discovery of a more advanced technique—the creation of a blood bond. This magical connection, forged through shared blood, allowed for seamless communication and heightened awareness of each other's well-being. Hellyne couldn't help but acknowledge the uniqueness of Von's magical journey. This was an ability few adepts could learn, and typically, only a master could produce. What came next was truly shocking.

Von manifested a sanguine shield comparable to one produced by a master of Hellyne's caliber. Seeing this, she decided to test the limits of his abilities. Cheating by infusing dark chaos magic into the shield, she expected it to crumble under the unpredictable influences. Yet, Von, quick to adapt, noticed the added threads and responded with a blend of apotropaic magic to deflect harmful energies.

Undeterred, Hellyne escalated the challenge by incorporating her own and red luck magic threads into the mix. The magical currents within the cavern crackled with the clash of opposing forces. Von, drawing upon his understanding of tychomancy, resisted Hellyne's attempts to destabilize his shield, further fortifying it with his own magic.

The cavern of darkness became a battlefield of magical prowess, a demonstration of Von's rapid growth and adaptability. The fusion of blood magic, chaos, luck, and protection magic, and created a complex rainbow of defenses leaving both Hellyne and Monica in awe.

Hellyne, a wry smile playing on her lips, conceded, "Impressive, Von. Your resilience is beyond expectation. It seems your journey into blood magic has taken an unexpected turn, and your skills continue to defy the norms. Let us try something else."

With a cautious tone, Hellyne explained the concept of hemalurgy as a potent yet morally complex ability within blood magic. It involved the transfer of magical abilities through the spilling and mixing of blood. The more blood taken from another individual, the longer Von could retain and utilize their skills. However, she had emphasized the ethical implications, as hemalurgy was one of the two abilities that classified blood magic as dark magic, and its practice was banned in all civilized countries. This was also an ability only an adept of master could perform.

Intrigued by the potential for expanding his magical repertoire, Von decided to test hemalurgy with two drops of Monica's blood. With a pinprick, he mixed her blood with his own and pulled it into his aura. A subtle and immediate transformation occurred within him. The mingling of their essences resulted in a growing affinity toward luck magic and chaos magic.

Von could feel the threads of luck and chaos weaving into the fabric of his magical essence. The newfound abilities sparked within him, a testament to the potency of hemalurgy. The cavern of darkness seemed to pulse with the energy of this forbidden art as Von contemplated the consequences and possibilities that lay ahead.

Monica, observing the experiment, raised an eyebrow. "You're really diving into the deep end, aren't you, Von? Hemalurgy is no joke. Are you sure you want to tread this path?"

Von, aware of the ethical dilemmas, nodded thoughtfully. "I don't want to ever have to use it, but I do need to discover a defense against it. Not all blood mages have good intent. Remember the bandits a few years back?"

The atmosphere in the cavern of darkness took on a somber tone as Hellyne broached the topic of the final master-level ability — the dreaded blood siphon. It was a skill that tapped into the life force of others through even the slightest wound, allowing Von to replenish his own vitality or redirect the stolen energy to empower and renew his magical abilities. The ethical implications of this ability weighed heavily on Hellyne's mind.

As Hellyne prepared to demonstrate, she pricked her finger, volunteering her own blood for the experiment. However, she cautioned Von to draw only a small amount, a reminder of the delicate balance between power and responsibility.

Von, understanding the gravity of the situation, approached the demonstration with a mix of trepidation and determination. Taking utmost care, he carefully drew a small amount of Hellyne's blood. The cavern seemed to hold its breath as the arcane currents responded to the ancient art about to unfold.

Hellyne, though experienced, couldn't hide a flicker of concern in her eyes. "Remember, Von, the blood siphon is a double-edged sword. Use it sparingly, and with great care. It can provide life but may also lead to a path of darkness if wielded recklessly."

Von nodded, the weight of the responsibility settling on his shoulders. With a measured breath, he activated the blood siphon, feeling the subtle pull of magical energies as he tapped into Hellyne's life force. The transfer was controlled, and he carefully directed the stolen vitality to renew his own reserves.

The cavern echoed with a subdued hum as the blood siphon concluded. Hellyne, though slightly drained, wore a faint smile. "You've shown great restraint, Von. The blood siphon is a dangerous ability, but your control over it suggests a level of mastery that I did not anticipate."

Monica, observing the demonstration, raised an eyebrow. "Well, that's one way to ensure you always have a backup plan, I guess."

Von smiled. Feeling the surge of abilities granted by the mingling of the demon spawn master's blood, couldn't resist the temptation to experiment with his newfound powers. The cavern of darkness became a stage for his exploration as he seamlessly transitioned between various forms, then created a mesmerizing gaze from his eyes on the master. It unnerved him to have discovered a faint corruption aura, an ability to induce fear without myalomancy and the possibility of placing a weak demonic hex to be among the abilities the master wizard had.

The greatest was the lurking feeling she might be able to summon otherworldly entities and control them and her ability to steal and consume the aura and spirits of the living. He truly didn't want to try them however he did mention them as being truly scary to the mistress of the cavern of darkness. Luckily, having only siphoned a few ounces of her blood, the added abilities were gone after around six subjective hours.

As Von showcased these abilities to Mistress Hellyne, she was both flabbergasted and terrified at the seamless integration of hemalurgy and blood siphoning. Normally, the energies obtained from one's blood could only heal one's body, restore one's magical energies, or give the blood mage a small portion of their capabilities. Yes, somehow, Von had blended the two abilities into a grandmaster level combination unlocking a range of powers surpassing the boundaries of conventional magic in a terrifying way.

Thinking through the possibilities, if he could do this now, what might stop him from becoming an evil emperor devouring the blood and abilities of his dissenters until they shriveled in death and gaining all their capabilities permanently. This line of thinking made her shudder. She had to dissuade him from ever travelling along this path.

Hellyne, taking a deep breath, her expression a mix of awe and concern, spoke with a measured tone, "Von, what you've achieved goes beyond any known magical boundaries. The blending of blood magic, my own demon spawn essence, and your own capabilities is unprecedented. Exercise great caution with these powers, for the shadows you tread within are deeper and more treacherous than you may realize. I will admit to you. You frighten me. When it comes down to it, I am afraid you may be my master someday. I only hope you will never use the last two abilities, even in situations of life and death."

Hearing this, Monica's jaw dropped, and her face turned pale. Von expected her to say something, but nothing poured forth from her mouth. She was actually rendered speechless with no witty remark toward him.

Between Mistress Hellyne's word and Monica's lack of words, Von staggered back. He had been blown away by this profound revelation. The gravity of his newfound abilities weighed heavily upon him leaving him without the faculties for speech, so saying nothing, he nodded solemnly.

The cavern of darkness echoed with the weight of the unknown. As the ephemeral powers granted by the mingling of blood faded, Von found himself concerned what the thoughts of the two women must upon seeing what he displayed. Would Monica still want to be his friend? Would Mistress Hellyne think him to be too big of a threat like he was certain some of the other council member must by now?
