Chapter 85 - Chapter 85 - The Climb

Once Monica finished her yogurt, Von made sure she was ready. "Good to go to class?"

"Class? I guess so. I hadn't really thought of it as lessons, but you are right. It's no different than if we went to school."

"Some of us were forced to go to school, since their parents weren't the best coopers in Milltown." He said with a grin. Von really hadn't needed to go to school because he could have learned with Monica, but his parents both wanted him to have as much education as he could get. This was mostly because he was so small, and they worried he might not be cut out to work as a knight unless he got a good growth spurt in his teen years. Thus, he already had three years of schooling at Milltown school.

"My parents might as well have been your parents. You live with them too." She took her finger and wiped the inside of her bowl of yogurt before smearing it on his nose.

"Hey, no fair," he said wiping the yogurt from his nose. "Race you to the elemental tower." He quickly looked around as she ran across the room. System, which door in here leads to the elemental tower?

Looking around and seeing the door, he immediately noted his best friend was almost to the door, with a bright red glow about her linking her to the door in question. He sighed in frustration. "Better lucky than good," he mumbled. He ran to the door to follow her.

Opening the metal door covered in images of air, water, mountains and fire, he rushed through knowing she had a huge head start. Exiting the spatial distortion created by the door, the tower loomed ahead of him. The tower of elemental magics stood as a majestic and imposing structure within the sprawling grounds of the magical academy. Rising high into the sky, it dominated the landscape, its spires reaching towards the heavens like the outstretched fingers of an ancient wizard casting a spell. The tower's architecture seamlessly blended with the enchanting surroundings, and its exterior shimmered with a magical aura hinting at the potent energies contained within.

As Von approached the tower, he was greeted by the distinct essence of the elements. Each side of the tower was dedicated to one of the four primary elements—earth, air, fire, and water. The base of the tower, a sturdy foundation rooted in the earth, showcased intricate carvings of rock formations, plants, and creatures associated with the elemental realm of earth magic. Towering sculptures of gargantuan stone golems stood guard at the entrance, their watchful eyes seemingly carved from precious gems, reflecting the connection between earth and gemstone magic.

Moving his eyes upward, the midsection of the tower embraced the element of air. The architectural design shifted to open balconies and airy spaces, allowing the winds to flow freely. Symbols of swirling gusts and feathered creatures adorned the walls, emphasizing the connection between the wizards within and the boundless skies. Ethereal sculptures of flying mythical beasts, their wings frozen in mid-flap, appeared to soar around this layer, acting as sentinels for the elemental domain of air magic.

The next tier of the tower heralded the domain of fire. The walls seemed to flicker with an ever-shifting play of flames, and the air shimmered with the warmth of an enchanting heat. Fire motifs danced across the surface, portraying symbols of dancing infernos, phoenixes, and other fiery creatures. Gargoyles fashioned in the likeness of fire elementals guarded the exterior, their molten eyes glowing with an inner flame, symbolizing the intense connection to the realm of fire magic.

As his vision ascended to the upper reaches of the tower, the element of water unfolded in a mesmerizing display. The architecture transitioned to reflect fluidity, with cascading waterfalls and flowing patterns mimicking the gentle waves of a magical sea. Murals depicting aquatic creatures and symbols of water adorned the walls, while sculptures of mythical sea serpents and water nymphs seemed to swim about this layer circling the tower while keeping a watchful eye on those prepared to enter below while welcoming those attuned to the mysteries of water magic.

As Von stepped through the ornate entrance of the tower of elemental magics, he was immediately enveloped by the distinctive atmosphere that characterized each elemental tier. The sturdy foundation, adorned with carvings of rock formations and gemstone motifs, signified the connection to the earth element. His own attunement to the essence melded with the essence of the tower boosting his strength and stamina allowing him to pick up speed.

Ascending swiftly, the air became more pronounced, and the architectural design shifted to embrace the element of air. While he immediately lost the boost from the earthen energies, the sympathies of this new element boosted his body and spirit allowing him to practically fly up the flights of stairs passing open balconies and airy spaces which allowed the winds to play freely. Symbols of swirling gusts and feathered creatures decorated the walls of this staircase causing Von to feel as though with little effort, he could lift his feet and fly.

Upon reaching the next tier, the transition to the realm of fire was apparent. First, he lost the speed and agility increase from the previous layer of element. Second, the air here shimmered with a warm glow, and flickering flames adorned the walls, dancing with a magical intensity. The entrance between these two layers was guarded by gargoyles resembling fire elementals, their molten eyes glowing with an inner flame. Von could feel the heat emanating from the sculpted figures, an indication to the intense connection to the element of fire and he could feel the sentience within them ready to defend the tower against undesirable intruders.

Continuing his rapid ascent, the tower unfolded the element of water in a mesmerizing display. Cascading waterfalls and flowing patterns adorned the walls, creating an ambiance of fluidity. Murals depicted aquatic creatures and symbols of water, while realistic sculptures of mythical sea serpents and water nymphs guarded the entrance.

While Von scurried through the interior of the tower he passed through a labyrinthine network of chambers, libraries, and laboratories, each dedicated to the study and practice of elemental magics. In his rush, he caught glimpses of earth-mages delving into the secrets of manipulating soil, stone, and gemstones to harness the power of the earth while aeromancers honed their abilities to control winds, currents, and the very breath of life. Above these levels, pyromancers experimented with the manipulation of flames, conjuring infernos and understanding the transformative nature of fire whilst hydromancers explored the depths of aquatic magic, delving into the mysteries of fluidity, ice, and the boundless power of the sea.

Passing through the layer of hydromancy, Von finally reached the summit—the grand central chamber where the elemental forces converged. Inside, the air hummed with harmonious energy, and at the center of the chamber stood the elemental nexus, an enormous crystal pulsating with the essence of all four elements. This strange crystal called to him asking him, no, almost directing him to come closer as his aura acknowledged the power within the color-changing crystal. Both he and it seemed to want to draw energies from the other. Despite his desire, the convergence point symbolized the unity of elemental forces within the academy; he knew he should not take it as his own. The best he could do at this time was watch as it cast a kaleidoscope of colors around the chamber.

After the brief moment of awe at the crystal, Von's attention was drawn to the archmage's office adjacent to the grand central chamber. The entrance to the office was marked by a beautifully crafted wooden door, engraved with intricate symbols representing each elemental affinity. As Von pushed the door open, he stepped into a space transcending the earthly bounds of the tower.

Alden's office was a spectacle of magical craftsmanship. The walls shimmered with enchantments, showcasing scenes of elemental mastery and ancient magical rituals. Bookshelves lined with tomes of arcane wisdom stretched to the ceiling, each volume bound in materials representing the elemental domains. The room exuded an otherworldly ambiance, as though a physical embodiment to the archmage's mastery over the elemental arts.

Monica, stood beside a majestic desk carved from a single colossal piece of enchanted wood. The surface of the desk bore intricate patterns representing the unity of the elements. The venerable figure of Alden awaited Von's arrival, his robe shimmering with the colors of earth, air, water, and silver symbolizing his mastery over these elemental forces and the mastery of apotropaic magics. Many of these protective shields take on a silver color, like the shield manifested by King Garret during the battle with the trolls.

"Von," greeted Archmage Alden, his voice carrying the wisdom of ages. "Welcome to the tower of elemental magics. Your journey through the realms of elemental mastery has brought you here, to the heart of our magical convergence. Monica says you now have to do her chores for tomorrow." The old tortoise laughed in delight. "She and I have been patiently awaiting your arrival."

Monica, with a warm almost mocking smile, waved for Von to join them by the desk. The Archmage continued, "Your affinity for the elemental arts is truly remarkable. We have much to discuss—your potential and the path that lies ahead. First, you need to be able to defend yourselves. Let us adjourn to the nexus chamber." He then walked past them into the larger nexus beyond.
