Chapter 20 - First Journey

Wei Fang was sitting on the foremost transport carriage, amidst the goods that they must send.

Except for them, there was also someone from the beast-taming hall who was sitting atop the scaled rhino.

Wei Fang had never been out of the sect before, so he was amazed at everything he saw.

Before they could leave the territory of the Azure Cloud Sect, they must pass through the cloud city.

The cloud city spawned more than thousands of kilometers and is located near the entrance of Azure Cloud Sect. It was a big and prosperous city.

It was a city that formed because of the Azure Cloud sect. Many disciples' families live in the cloud city after their son or daughter is accepted into the sect.

At first, the city was not as huge as it is now, but as the family started to have more and more descendants, more disciples were also accepted into the sect. The city also became bigger to accommodate them.

This was the first time Wei Fang had seen such a bustling city. It was even more bustling than the festival day in his hometown.

Of course, as soon as the people of the city saw the transport carriage with the Azure Cloud Sect symbol—an Azure-colored cloud with a rainbow encircling it—they instantly made way for the convoy.

Wei Fang looked at everything that was happening with interest. Luckily, he was out because of a team mission. If he went out himself, he would likely be laughed at for being country bumpkin.

"Are you disciples that entered the sect through special recruitment?" Asked Wang Ren, he clearly saw Wei Fang's behavior, which looked like he had never been to the city.

There were two ways for someone to enter the sect. The first was the sect entrance test, which is held annually. The second was through recommendations.

Wei Feng was someone who entered the sect through recommendations.

"Yes." Wei Fang nodded. "I was brought to the sect by Elder Su."

"So, are you close to Elder Su?" Wang Ren asked hurriedly, clearly perturbed by it.

But Wei Fang seemed to not notice it at all, as he answered lightly, "No, Elder Su just left me to my own device after he brought me to the sect. He also never contacted me again after that."

Wang Ren seemed relieved when he heard that.

Their journey was peaceful; there was no monster or bandit attack.

Mosnters would feel intimidated instantly as soon as they saw the convoy formation. While bandits would feel scared as soon as they saw the Asure Cloud sect symbol on the convoy, no one wanted to end up on the wanted list of some larger sect.

Wei Fang didn't seem to notice it, though. As he didn't have any experience traveling in the world of cultivation, he thought that it was just a normal thing that their journey was peaceful.

He talked with Brother Wang's along the way, and he didn't feel the passing of time at all.

Occasionally he would look back to the carriage behind the one he was in, wanting to look at how Borther Gang was faring.

But the mountain of goods was obstructing his vision.

He didn't feel dejected, though; he felt that the traveling was fun, except for the bump of the carriage that made his buttocks uncomfortable; everything else was fun to him.

He was just like someone who had traveled for the first time; everything was new to him, so he didn't feel bored. There was also Brother Wang, who was constantly explaining the things they saw along the way.

Meanwhile, on the carriage behind him, Brother Gang was sitting with closed eyes, and his breathing was even. He was cultivating.

Time passed, and night finally came.

Unfortunately, the convoy didn't manage to react to the next town, so they could only camp in the wild.

Wei Fang could only watch as the people prepared their tents and the like. It's not like he didn't want to help, but when he tried to help, he ended up making more trouble instead.

After a busy evening, everyone was gathered around the bonfire.

They started having a light chat to warm up the atmosphere. Of course, while everyone was chatting, there was also someone like Brother Gang who would cultivate as long as there was time.

"So, how are we going to determine the order of the night watch?" The leader of the guard asked. It was also what was on everyone's mind right now.

"Why don't we let the three of them do the night watch?" One of the guards said while pointing towards the Wei Fang group of three, "After all, they didn't do much in the day, so they were most apt to do the job."

He didn't dare pick someone from the beast-taming hall, as they clearly had the beast-taming hall behind them. But for the three of them, it was no problem. If they had backing, they would never choose to do a job like this.

"Yes, I think it's a good idea." Some people echoed their thoughts.

"Yes. I agree."

"No!" But the captain disagreed with the suggestion.

"Why?" The guard who suggested it asked, clearly dissatisfied with the captain's rejection.

"Their cultivation was too low; they wouldn't notice anything even if the enemy attacked." Although his words were a bit exaggerated, as the sense of someone at the Qi condensation level was almost the same. It was true to some extent, as someone with a lower cultivation realm could be silently eliminated more easily.

The other guard was also silent, not refuting his words. It was a matter of whether they were alive or dead after all; they didn't want to take it lightly.

"How about this? The night watch would be divided into four shifts, with three guards in each shift, and the last shift would be me and the three kids."

Everyone looked at each other; only the disciples from the beast-taming hall seemed relieved, as they didn't need to do the night watch.

It was also for the better, as they needed to preserve their mental strength to control the scaled rhino during the day.

And so, the order of the night watch was decided after some small discussion about who would be responsible for each shift.

Wei Fang only looked on as the discussion was ongoing; he was too weak to have the right to speak.

He didn't mind the results, actually. He thinks that it was good enough, as he didn't need to be responsible for a whole-night watch.

After the discussion, everyone except the one responsible for the night watch went to rest. They still need to continue their journey tomorrow, so it was better to rest earlier.

It's good, he mused as he entered the tent.

He thought that the tent might have a better place than the courtyard where he lived in the sect.

It was 2x3 in size; there's nothing inside except a mat.

The tent was set up with Brother Wang's help, as he couldn't do it. The cultivator was quite particular, usually. So each person had one tent, as they wanted to have their own private space.

Wei Fang cultivates a bit before going to sleep.

"Brother Wei! Woke Up!"

Wei Fang woke up groggily because of the constant shaking and saw Brother Wang look at him.

"What?" He said he was still not fully conscious.

"It's our turn to do the night watch." Brother Wang explained.

"Oh yes, night watch!" Wei Fang finally remembered.

He woke up hastily and said, "Okay, let's go!" He didn't want to skip his turn, as it would offend everyone in the convoy.

Wei Fang and Brother Wang arrived at the nonfire not long after, where the guard team captain was already waiting.

"You three will be patrolling the south, while I will be responsible for patrolling the other three areas." The guard captain said shortly before leaving. It seems he didn't want to hear any of their opinions.

Quite the arrogant man, Wei Fang thought, but he didn't contradict his order. After all, who would want to do more if they could do less?

The three of them walked towards the south. The east area was where the scaled rhino was located, so it didn't need too much attention, as usually animals have a keener instinct for danger than humans, so the captain is largely responsible for the west and north.

Wei Fang decided to go together with Brother Wang while Brother Gang went alone.

Wei Fang didn't know what was on his mind, as he was always alone. Doesn't he feel lonely?

After they arrived at the location they were supposed to patrol, they began chatting.

Wei Fang seemed to hear some bird singing with an odd frequency, but when he asked Brother Wang about it, he said that it was just another nocturnal bird, which he believed.

Unknown to him, Brother Wang would blow a whistle from time to time when he was not looking, which produced the sound.
