Chapter 45 - Recognizing Herbs

"Six hours of pill chamber use." Wei Fang grinned.

Seeing Wei Fang grinning, the man hesitated. He didn't know if Wei Fang was bluffing or not.

Maybe to Wei Fang, the allocated time for pill chamber use was not that important because he already said in front of everyone that he didn't aspire to become an alchemist. But it was a different thing for him. For a newbie like him who still didn't have a stable way to earn merits, the free allocation of the pill chamber was very important.

From learning to control the earth fire to refining pills or medicine, everything was done in the pill chamber. If he lost it, he would need to spend a considerable amount of time doing missions to obtain merit before he could use the pill chamber.

"If you don't dare, then say so. No need to waste everyone's time." Wei Fang said, about to leave.

"Wait!" The man shouted, causing Wei Fang to turn his head.

"I agree, but I decide what we will do." The man said with gritted teeth.

Wei Fang grinned widely and said, "Okay."

Seeing Wei Fang's wide grin, the man had a bad feeling. It seems he had fallen into Wei Fang's trap.

But he hurriedly shook his head. It's impossible. He must be bluffing; yes, he must be bluffing; he was just a new disciple; it's impossible for him to be more skilled than me; he must be bluffing! The man said it repeatedly in his mind, as if to hypnotize himself to believe it.

The reason he dared to confront Wei Fang was because he had already investigated his background. He was just a new disciple who was crippled. He just didn't expect him to become a disciple of an elder. Even so, he refused to believe that he was inferior to him in terms of skill.

Wei Fang followed the man towards the place where the entrance test was held yesterday. He didn't know much about the duel mechanism, so he chose to just follow along. After all, he didn't want misunderstandings like when he was at the Cloud River sect to occur again.

The crowd also didn't want to miss the commotion and followed. At first, they were a bit hostile towards Wei Fang because he joined the Alchemy Hall through connection, while they needed to spend months, if not years, memorizing the book Catalogue of Herbs before they could pass the entrance test.

But now that they know he joined because his master was an elder, the hostility has ceased. They couldn't do anything about it. And even if they successfully expelled Wei Fang, there was a chance that the Alchemy Hall would make him join again to prevent him from joining another hall.

"Hey, who do you think would win?"

"Hai Min, of course; after all, he already spent two years memorizing the herb catalog."

"But since Wei Fang was an elder disciple, there must be something special about him to be noticed by an elder."

"So what? Even if he was special, he just joined the sect a few months ago. Even if he spent all that time memorizing, how much could he remember?"

"You're right. But I was still hoping Wei Fang would win. After all, it would be more interesting that way."

While the crowd was discussing it heatedly, Wei Fang and Hai Min arrived at the place where Elder Tan was yesterday. Of course, Elder Tan was not there anymore as the entrance test was already finished; instead, there was a senior brother with squinty eyes and a sleepy look.

He looked up at Wei Fang and Hai Min and asked, "What's up?"

"We want Senior Brother Qian to become a witness to our match." Hai Min said.

Senior Qian was famous for being impartial, so he was suitable for being a witness. It was not that he was like Justice or anything; it was just that he was too lazy to care. Fabricating results or being partial to someone could bring him many troublesome things, so it was better to be impartial.

"What do you want to compete in?" He asked again.

Wei Fang looked at Hai Min. He had already agreed to let Hai Min choose how they would compete.

"Recognizing herb." Hai Min answered.

"Okay, you have two hours as soon as you enter the doors." Senior Qian said, "The one who recognizes more herbs would be the winner."

Wei Fang looked at the five doors that were located beside Senior Qian and saw Hai Min enter one of them.

"What is it again?" Senior Qian looked at Wei Fang. "Why didn't you enter?"

Wei Fang scratched his head and spoke, "This is my first time, so I don't know anything about what's behind the door."

"Just enter the door, and you will know everything you need to do." Senior Qian waved his hand, shooing Wei Fang away. He didn't have any intention of explaining.

Wei Fang gulped and entered one of the doors randomly.

Wei Fang saw a formation at the center of the otherwise empty room. He took two spirit stones and placed them in the formation, but nothing was happening.

"Not enough?" He took out one more, but still nothing happened.

He placed another spirit stone in the formation, but there was still no response.

In the end, he took out another one reluctantly; it was five spirit stones!

As soon as the five spirit stones were in place, the formation shone brightly.

Wei Fang staggered back, covering his eyes that were blinded by the light.

When he opened his eyes again, the empty room was no more. In the center of the room was a table that was filled with spirit herbs piled into a mountain.

Wei Fang took one of the herbs from the table. He stared at it intently, trying to find the difference. Interestingly, he couldn't really tell that the herb in his hand was an illusion.

If he didn't know that it was an illusion beforehand, he would most likely think that the sect was wasting heaven's gift by just piling the herb without giving it proper care. After all, from a glance, he could tell many herbs had conflicting properties that would affect one another.

Wei Fang sniffed the herb in his hand, and he was becoming more astonished.

"Even the smell was replicated perfectly."

"System-sama, can this illusion fool someone in the Foundation Establishment realm?"

[No!]

"No?"

[The illusion may be able to deceive one's senses, but it cannot evade the detection of spirit sense. In the first place, the illusion here was made for the purpose of testing one memorization, so the illusion was not that strong.]

Wei Fang nodded, feeling that the system explanation was logical.

[And if the illusion is strengthened, can you even afford to use it?]

Even though he knew the system was insulting him, he couldn't help but agree. It costs five spirit stones to deceive one sense; if one wants to deceive spirit sense, how much would it cost? Maybe in the hundred.

"System-sama, what do I do to pass the test?" This was what Wei Fang wanted to ask from the start; he didn't know how the formation worked!

[Took the herb from the table and said its name.]

"Oh, Flame Star Herb."

Suddenly, the herb in Wei Fang's hand broke into particles of light before disappearing.

"Thank you, system-sama!"

After knowing the mechanism, Wei Fang didn't hesitate and started to name the herbs on the table one by one.

"Green Snake Vine, White Ginseng Root, Ice Flake Flower, Starlight Herb, Flame Patterned Grass,..."

Without even needing two hours to pass, the herb on the table had already disappeared.

"That's it?"
