When Luca's mother and sisters were completely out of his life, it wasn't that much of a shock. For years they were isolated from him slowly, disappearing more each day until he could no longer reach them.
Having lost all contact wasn't that much of a surprise and the gradualness of it made it easier to get used to even if it hurt nonetheless.
Before, he had called a break for the meeting he was in when he saw Rachel's name pop up on his caller ID. She didn't usually call first unless it was something important.
As he exited the conference room, he found a quiet corner and held his phone to his ear.
"Rachel?" he answered. "Do you need something?"
"Sophia has gone missing. She's been missing for two hours."
Luca's phone slid out of his hand and clattered on the wooden floor he was standing on. Luckily it didn't shatter but he felt burning behind his eyes. It felt like he was going to be sick.
