"Sometimes the most beautiful melodies are born from the darkest places." - Guts, Berserk
The sun dipped lower, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. A newfound understanding blossomed between them. Not only had they shared secrets and quirks, but they had also discovered a shared admiration for someone who believed in a world where everyone, regardless of quirk, could shine. And in that shared admiration, they found a deeper connection, a bond that promised to blossom into something more than just friendship. It was the promise of a future built on equality, empathy, and the unwavering belief that every life, every person, mattered.
As they parted ways, waving Momo goodbye Toji and Maki went their way, as their house was just two minutes from the park, and it would be good to have a walk home, as the park was empty, and they would get a bit of privacy.
Momo climbed into her limousine, stealing one last glance at their happy faces, laughing and giggling as they had their hands interlocked in each other's a gesture of intimacy and trust. A look of safety in Maki's eyes, as if she can be anything she wants while being in Toji's presence, while Toji has a look of protectiveness in his eyes, as if he would protect her in any situation. A knot of something strange tightened in her stomach.
The ache in Momo's chest lingered as the limousine whisked her away from the park. It wasn't a physical pain, but a deep yearning, a longing for something just out of reach. Toji's name hummed in her mind, a simple melody with unexpected depth.
She drove away, the ache in her chest refusing to go away. It wasn't a sharp pain, but a dull throb, like missing something just beyond her grasp. Toji's name echoed in her mind, a simple word carrying a surprising melody of emotions.
His analytical mind, his genuine appreciation, his… kindness. That was what it was, wasn't it? In a world where everyone saw her as the Yaoyorozu heiress, he had simply seen her. Momo. Just Momo. The girl who could create anything, yes, but also the girl who laughed easily and yearned for friendship.
She pictured his calm gaze, the way his eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled. It was a small smile, genuine and warm, unlike the practiced smiles she was used to—a smile that held a promise, a promise of something real, something meaningful.
The way he comforted Maki when she was crying, how she slept on his shoulder without any kind of worry or anything, the trust she had in him to let her guard down and show her vulnerability without any worry, He bringing her out of her misery, she was remembering everything that happened in the park, or in particular, all the moments of dependability Toji showed, and how he saved her when she needed it the most, all of this was playing back to back in her mind, as her aching increased, the tight knot increasing.
The ache throbbed, morphing into a determination. She wouldn't just let this feeling fade, this connection she had felt with Toji and Maki. They had seen and understood her, and she yearned to see them again, laugh with them, and create more memories that weren't confined by expectations or wealth.
As the city lights blurred past the window, an idea sparked in Momo's mind, a mischievous glint in her eyes. She remembered his words, his appreciation for her quirk. With a playful smile, she decided to create something, not for anyone else, but for herself. Something that embodied the connection they had forged, a way to bridge the gap between them.
Her fingers twitched, a familiar warmth building in her palms. Then, she exposed the skin of her hands and with a surge of creative energy, a small device materialized. It was a delicate clockwork sparrow, its feathers shimmering with an iridescent sheen. Each feather held a tiny inscription, a fleeting memory from their day: a shared joke, a moment of camaraderie, a laugh echoed in the air.
With a silent nod and a fluttering heart, Momo sent the sparrow on its way. It soared out the window, a tiny ambassador of her newfound desire, carrying the promise of friendship and the hope of another encounter. As it disappeared into the city lights, Momo knew this wasn't the end. It was just the beginning. The ache in her chest remained, but now it was tinged with anticipation, a sweet and thrilling reminder that true connections transcend even the gilded cages of her life. And she, Momo Yaoyorozu, the girl who craved to be seen, was finally ready to step out and meet the world, ready to find her own melody, her own color, and, above all, to find her way back to the boy who had helped her remember who she truly was.
The reason behind creating the sparrow wasn't just about friendship; it was about revealing the "real" Momo, the one who craved genuine connections and creative freedom. The intricate beauty of the sparrow showed Toji who she was beyond the Yaoyorozu name, hoping he'd appreciate her artistry and individuality.
While the above reason was what she thought of while making the sparrow, it had a hidden motive as well, it was to test the waters, sending the sparrow was a playful way to gauge Toji's interest in her without being too forward. It opened a channel of communication without the pressure of a direct approach. If he ignores it, she'll know he may not be interested, but if he responds, it opens a door for further connection.
Somewhere deep inside she wanted someone like Toji to be her friend, it wasn't that she didn't want Maki as her friend, infact it was because of Maki that she was able to meet Toji.
The reason was that she also wanted someone like Toji around whom she could be just her, Momo, just Momo, not Momo Yaoyorozu, not heiress Yaoyorozu or anything like that, no such names, someone around whom she could show her true self, a version she wanted to be but wasn't able to while being surrounded around people she didn't want to meet or be around.
So she subconsciously thought about Toji, I mean where would she be able to find any such person, instead why not the person be Toji himself?
Well, that was something she thought of subconsciously, something she wanted for as long as she could remember. With that thought, she sent the sparrow to reach Toji
The clockwork sparrow, propelled by a whispered wish and a sliver of moonlight, darted through the twilight sky. Its iridescent feathers beat against the cooling air, each inscribed with a memory, a silent echo of laughter and shared glances. Its destination: two figures strolling through the quiet park, their voices weaving a blend of friendship against the rustling leaves.
"Did you really mean what you said about Momo?" Maki's voice, soft as a dragonfly's wings, broke the comfortable silence. Toji raised an eyebrow, a playful quirk on his lips.
"About her being amazing? Absolutely." He chuckled, recalling the way Momo's eyes had ignited when she talked about her quirk and her mom.
"That's not what I meant," Maki teased, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "About… you know…"
