As Viktor continued his studies into the runic language and how it worked, Yami continued to help him as he was the one who had the memories of his previous hosts
As Yami wasn't a truly biological creature, his mind was quite different compared to one. As such, he remembered these things so he could help Viktor in his magical studies. Magic was something that took a lot of studying and Viktor was no stranger to study.
He was a Computer Science Major so he could get this down rather quickly. Now that he had the runic language in his mind he needed material to practice. As such, he surged mana into his shadow, and from it, emerged ten large black swords.
He reached down and he picked up the first one. It was a solid black blade that radiated a stream of shadows. These blades were strong, durable, magically charged, and could cut pretty much anything.
This was thanks to the combination of the Divine Sword, Ama-No-Ohabari, which had killed the son of Izanagi and Izanami the Japanese creator gods, and the Cursed King Lycaon. When the Divine Blade having absorbed the blood of such a god, was merged with the first werewolf Lycaon it was forever cursed.
This resulted in the swords and weapons created through this Sacred Gear being able to pretty much cut anything, immaterial or otherwise. Magic, Gods, Souls, and at the highest level concepts.
No one except one user of Canis Lykaon had pushed the Sacred Gear to that level except for Tobio Ikuse. He had pushed the Sacred Gear to his limit by creating his own Abyssal Balance Breaker.
Viktor intended to push further than that so he had to begin somewhere. He rested the sword on his lap as he thought of the runes in his mind. He had a few he could place so he created a engraving needle out of the shadows to carve the runes in. He could place runes of sharpening, self repair, umbreakable or any other, but some of those would be useless.
Swords made through Canis Lykaon already were self-repairing, and their whole point was to cut through anything. As such, he instead placed a few elemental runes. He placed runes for Lightning, Shock, Poison, and Cursed.
After he carved the runes he surged his mana into the blade and it caused the runed to light up across the blade. It caused the sword to crackle with dark black lightning while the blade itself seemed to radiate a sickly feeling.
This meant whoever he hit with this would have their wounds poisoned, cursed, and burned by dark lightning. He smiled as he gazed at his work, as his first go had worked. He turned to Yami who was the reason he got this so fast in the first place.
"Yami my friend, you are a treasure."
Yami began to jump on the couch as he loved praise. Viktor was super thankful for his Heavenly Restriction as his entire body had been enhanced. His reaction speed, strength, senses, insticts, and the speed of his thoughts. He could learn things at an accelerated rate that while not Speedforce fast, was good enough for him.
As a result, the memories that Yami was shoving into his mind got processed faster than others would be able to do. Feeling pleased with himself he got up and in a blink, he reached the other side of the room.
He grabbed a notebook from his desk and a pen. He then blinked back to his couch in a moment. He placed the notebook on the small table before he began to write at rapid speeds.
He wrote down the entire runic alphabet, their meanings, and how to use them. Once he had that he flipped the page and he then began to write down the method to use human DxD Magic.
It involved calculations which was how humans used magic. He would need to further study the memories of Yami's past weilders closer. To not be bothered he focused and he sprang up another Bounded Field. Once the Field was up, he channeled mana through his body increasing his reaction speed further and even his thought processes.
He then began to rapidly fill out page after page and from time to time, he raised his hands as he created magic circles in his hands which he tested out by unleashing on the wall.
It was good the Bounded Field overlapped and created a copy of the real area as he would have destroyed the house without it. He got lost in his experimentation as he filled several pages as he worked on trying to gain access to other elements.
He got cursed and holy fire from his two Sacred Gears, and shadows from Yami. What about the other elements as fire, and shadows were only so good? He was interested in lightning as Fire and Lightning were a deadly combo. To go along with them he would not mind wind magic to increase his speed and attack with wind slashes, tornados, and other wind-based magics.
Then there was mind magic like Oclumency from Harry Potter to create defenses for his mind. He would also need to make magic rituals to extend his life or make him stronger as he had no idea what his life span was.
Having magic made one live longer for sure, but not forever. As he continued to scribble away, Yami eventually just curled up on the couch falling asleep. He didn't wake up for another hour until he heard a loud crackle of thunder.
When he looked up, he saw Viktor standing with black lightning crackling across his body. Viktor turned to Yami with a smile as he had gotten the process down.
"I got a hang of it."
Yami got up and glanced at the notebook that Viktor had been scribbling on. Several pages were full of different magic circles and with several scratched-out mistakes. Yami suddenly felt himself be lifted off the ground as he ended up in Viktor's hug.
"Who is the best god-killing dog ever? You are."
Yami closed his eyes as Viktor placed him on the couch to scratch his belly and chest. Yami loved the attention so after giving him the proper care, Viktor sat back down.
"I call this Cursed Lightning. I combine the cursed fire coming from you, Canis Lykaon with the lightning element. Of course. I can do the opposite."
Yami tilted his head as he barked asking what Viktor meant. He then saw as Viktor raised his left hand which began to crackle with purple lightning.
"I can also combine the holy flames with lightning to create an enhanced version of Baraqiel's Holy Lightning. Though as always, trouble."
His right arm began to crackle with black and purple Lightning, but other than the not clashing the two didn't mix. It would be useful to have both cursed and holy damage at the same time rather than separate.
Viktor waved his arm as he brought down the Bounded Field around him. He picked up his notebook before closing it and dropping it into his shadow.
He wanted to get some food so he started to walk toward his fridge. However, as he was doing so, he saw the lock on his door start moving. He and Yami froze as the door opened and a young woman walked in. She could not have been older than 23, but she also froze when she saw him and Yami.
For a few moments, he didn't know what to say before he spoke.
"Before you freak out, I can explain."
The poor woman ran out the door making him sigh.
"Go get her."
With a bark, Yami dove into the shadows before he rushed after her. The woman who was most likely the owner of the house didn't make it far.
"HELP M-"
That was as far as she got as her own shadow sprang up and wrapped around her. She was then dragged into her shadow before she was dragged back inside the house. Yami when he entered the house kicked the door closed as he stuck his head into his shadow.
He grabbed the girl by her shirt before placing her down in front of Viktor. She was shaking in terror as she had been dragged into her own shadow. Viktor cleared his voice as he sat on the couch.
"I know this looks bad and you may be thinking that you are in danger, but I can assure you, that you are perfectly safe. Do you understand?"
She took a deep breath before nodding. She may just be saying what she thought would keep her alive.
"Are you just nodding because you're scared or do you really understand?"
She didn't respond so he sighed.
"Just speak to me ok? Is this your house?"
"Y-yes."
He winced.
"I take you came to check out the house or something. How did a young woman like you get a house like this for rent?"
She took a deep breath as she calmed her nerves.
"My grandma left it to me."
He thought about it before he stood up.
"I get the picture, my bad for breaking in. I didn't damage anything as I quite like this house. If you need rent money, I got money to pay for the time I have been here, but you will need to keep it on the down low since I didn't get it the legal way."
She sat up as it didn't seem he was going to kill her. You could never tell with Super Powered individuals as some were frankly unhinged.
"Why are you in my house?"
He shrugged.
"I needed a place to live. You see, I am working as a vigilante here in Central City. I am the new guy, but since I told you, you are stuck with me. I can't simply let you go."
He rubbed his hands as he looked down at the girl. She went pale as she thought he was going to use her knowing his secret to keep her under his thumb.
"I didn't hear anything, nothing at all. Please don't hurt me."
He shook his head as he was just making a joke.
"I never intended to. I'm trying to be a hero here."
She squinted her eyes feeling a bit more brave. If he wanted to be a hero, he wouldn't kill her, right?
"A hero who breaks into houses, and drags girls into shadows and rubs his hands at her?"
He shrugged.
"I said trying, not that I was all good. Besides, I could just erase your memory if this ever happened. I am quite new to this magic you see, so I could erase your memory of your family too."
He began to lower his hand toward her face causing her to close her eyes.
"I PROMISE NOT TO SAY ANYTHING!"
He stopped causing him to smile.
"A promise with a mage is a big thing, miss. What is your name?"
She gulped as he gave him her real name.
"Lorna Dane."
He glanced down at the girl who had long black hair, and a very pretty face as comic fictional characters tended to be. She shared the same name as the daughter of Magneto, but probably just a coincidence. Right?
"I see. Well, Miss Dane, let's make a deal."
He kneeled down and stuck his hand into his shadow before he pulled out a stack of 100-dollar bills he stole from a warehouse from some gangsters.
"I will give you this, 100 dollar bills, or 10,000 dollars. You will sign a magic contract with me, swearing you will not tell a soul about me. Otherwise, you will lose your voice and your vision. In exchange, you get 10,000 dollars and I get to keep living here. Fair?"
She once again felt nervous.
"Magic?"
He nodded.
"I am a magic user, that is Yami by the way. My magic familiar who eats souls."
"Bark."
She glanced at the dog on the couch who was certainly no normal dog. She got to her feet no longer planning to run away. She could really use that money as that was why she wanted to rent this place to pay off her student loans.
She could sell it, but she wanted to live here eventually and her grandma just died.
"Why will I lose my voice and eyesight? Don't these contracts usually end in death?"
He had a reason for this and a good one.
"Death is easy, becoming cripples is more of a deterrent right. So, will you agree to my deal? It's ten thousand dollars for free and all you got to do is say nothing and look the other way."
From the look of it, the money he was waving in front of her face was working. Now, he wanted to see if this girl was really Lorna Dane and why the hell she was in DC and not Marvel.
(I originally just used the name Lorna since picking names is tricky, but then I decided to just roll with it. Fanfics are the times to play around after all.)
