Chapter 312
Cheng Dalei stood at the edge of the canyon and gazed at the side opposite him. The chasm was about thirty feet, or roughly ten meters, wide. Its depth was about two to three hundred meters, and the fallen remains of a suspension bridge scattered below.
"Bring me the rope."
Cheng Dalei removed the heavy axe from his back and stretched out his arms. He knew he would have to build a bridge for them to cross; a troublesome task, but the promise of a permanent solution was worth the effort.
Someone passed him a rope. Cheng Dalei noticed a hunched jujube tree at the other end of the canyon. He tied one end of the rope into a loop and signaled for the people surrounding him to step back.
Everyone understood Cheng Dalei's intention. He planned to lasso the rope onto the jujube tree on the other side of the canyon, a task that seemed impossible given the ten meter distance. Even the most proficient rope handlers like Hei Yan and Lü Hong were doubtful.
