Established in 1931, the Committee was formed by the boss of what was formerly known as the Genovese family—Charlie Luciano—to replace the old Sicilian Mafia's rule. It was publicly called "The Committee," acting as the unified channel for negotiating between crime families, aiming to prevent incidents like the Valentine's Day Massacre from happening again and controlling the internal activities of the Mafia across the United States.
By its literal meaning, the main role of the American Mafia Committee was to coordinate internal conflicts among the major Mafia families and to put an end to the use of violence for conflict resolution.
It must be said that the establishment of the American Mafia Committee indeed reduced the issues being solved by pure violence and murder among Mafia families.
