The place where Han Dongchen and the others were stationed was a rather remote mountainous area, home to an independent garrison. The family quarters of the garrison were very rudimentary, they were temporary living arrangements housing families in the cave dwellings.

The interior and exterior had the same arch shape. Behind the heated bed was a stove and then an empty space for things like a wardrobe. The only natural light in the entire cave dwelling came from the windows and doors, the back part hardly saw any sunlight.
