Chapter 5 - A sudden sleep

The sunlight streamed gently through the sheer curtains, casting a soft glow upon the room. It was a day that seemed suspended in tranquility, a respite from the whirlwind of emotions that had consumed me the day before. Lost in my thoughts, I sat in the solitude of the chamber, contemplating the choices I had made and the path that lay before me.

Yesterday had been a day of reckoning, a day when the boundaries of my heart had been pushed to their limits. As I left the presence of both Gabriel and John, their expressions etched in my memory, I couldn't help but feel the weight of their emotions hanging heavy in the air. Gabriel's green eyes had burned with a fiery hatred, his words laced with bitterness. And John, dear John, his shock had been palpable, his face a canvas of disbelief when I had impetuously proposed to him.

Gabriel's words echoed in my mind, his accusation that my actions were mere attempts to annoy him. In truth, his declaration of not loving me had ignited an anger within me—a fire that had driven me to seek solace and a sense of control by proposing to John. But as the stillness of this day settled upon me, my thoughts turned to introspection, to questioning the true motives behind my impulsive decision.

Had I acted out of love, or had it been a desperate attempt to fill a void within my heart? The answer eluded me, hidden within the depths of my own emotions. And so, I found myself grappling with the uncertainty, the weight of my choices pressing upon me like an unyielding burden.

Lost in the labyrinth of my own thoughts, I was startled from my reverie by a gentle knock on the door. It was Meg, my loyal confidante, whose presence always brought a sense of comfort and understanding. Her voice, filled with warmth and familiarity, permeated the room.

"My lady, have you awakened?" she inquired softly, her concern evident in her tone.

"Yes, you may come in," I replied, my voice betraying a mixture of vulnerability and determination.

The door opened, and Meg stepped into the room, her presence a soothing balm to my restless soul. She approached me with a gentle smile, her eyes filled with compassion.

"Good morning, my lady," she greeted me, her voice like a whispered melody. "You seem deep in thought. Is everything alright?"

I looked into her eyes, grateful for her unwavering support and understanding. The weight of my decisions seemed lighter in her presence, as if she held the key to unlocking the answers that eluded me.

"I had a rather eventful day yesterday," I began, my voice filled with a mix of trepidation and longing. "I made a choice that has left me questioning everything."

Meg's brow furrowed with concern, and she took a seat beside me, her presence a comforting anchor in the sea of uncertainty.

"Tell me, my lady," she urged gently. "I'm here to listen."

And so, I poured out my heart to Meg, recounting the intensity of Gabriel's hatred, the shock on John's face, and the impulsive proposal that had escaped my lips. I laid bare my emotions, allowing the vulnerability within me to unfurl like the petals of a delicate flower.

"At first, anger consumed me," I confessed, my voice trembling with the weight of my admission. "But as I reflect upon it now, I wonder if my decision to right or wrong"

Meg looked at me, her expression devoid of surprise. "My lady, if you don't mind me saying, this topic seems to revolve around your marriage to Lord John," she said calmly.

I was taken aback by her statement. "How do you know this, Meg?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

"Well, my lady, everyone seems to be aware," Meg replied, her voice tinged with awkwardness. "It has been the talk of the household."

A mixture of surprise and apprehension washed over me. I hadn't realized that the news of my impulsive proposal and the subsequent decision to marry John had spread so quickly. The thought of others discussing my personal affairs made me feel exposed and vulnerable.

"Meg, what happened when I left the room and slept through the day? What transpired yesterday?" I inquired, eager to piece together the events that had unfolded in my absence.

Meg paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts. "My lady, Lord Gabriel caused quite a scene," she began, her voice filled with a mix of concern and recollection. "He was furious and attempted to attack Lord John. They engaged in a heated argument, and it escalated into a physical altercation."

I listened intently, my heart sinking at the realization of the chaos that had unfolded in my absence. The thought of Gabriel's anger and the violence that had ensued filled me with a sense of unease.

"I fear that Madam Brute will hear about this," Meg continued, her voice tinged with worry. "She is known for her fierce protectiveness over Gabriel, and I suspect she will be furious."

A wry smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I acknowledged Meg's observation. My aunt, Madam Brute, had always been a force to be reckoned with, particularly when it came to Gabriel. The thought of her reaction to the news of our altercation with John sent a shiver down my spine.

"Yes, I am well aware that my aunt is not fond of this situation," I replied, my voice laced with a hint of amusement. "She has made her disdain for John quite clear in the past."

Meg looked at me with concern, her eyes filled with unwavering loyalty. "My lady, I want you to know that I will always be by your side, no matter the circumstances," she said, her voice filled with affection.

I met her gaze, a profound sense of gratitude welling within me. "I know, Meg. And I am truly grateful for your unwavering support," I replied, my voice filled with sincerity. "In times like these, it is comforting to have someone who believes in me."

Our conversation was abruptly interrupted by the sudden opening of the door, accompanied by piercing screams that shattered the tranquility of the chamber. The air crackled with tension as my aunt, Madam Brute, stormed into the room, her face contorted with fury.

."Is it true? Have you dared to defy me and marry that wretched John?" she spat, her voice filled with venom. How dare you do something without my permission? What did you say to Gabriel?" She yelled, her anger reverberating through the room.

I lay in my bed, listening to her tirade, feeling a mix of resignation and defiance. This was the moment I had been dreading, the confrontation I knew would come sooner or later. But now, as my aunt unleashed her fury upon me, I couldn't help but feel a sense of liberation. For today was indeed the last day I would spend in this mansion, under her watchful eye.

"Elenore! How dare you do this out of jealousy?" she continued to shout, her voice echoing off the walls. "Do you have any idea how hard it is to destroy this rumor? You have brought shame upon this family!"

I gazed up at the ceiling, my mind drifting away from her angry words. In truth, I had not acted out of jealousy, but out of a desire for happiness and freedom. The confines of this mansion had suffocated me for far too long, and the prospect of a life with John promised a breath of fresh air.

As my aunt ranted, her face twisted with rage, I realized that her words no longer held power over me. I had made my decision.

I would leave this place, this suffocating environment that had held me captive for far too long. My parents' house beckoned to me like a beacon of familiarity and solace, despite their anger and disappointment. I had left them behind to be with Gabriel and sought refuge under the care of my aunt, but now I yearned for the embrace of my childhood home.

With a newfound determination, I rose from my bed and faced my aunt, her anger still emanating from her like a palpable force. "Aunt Brute, I understand your anger, but this decision was not born out of jealousy," I mustered the courage to speak up, my voice steady despite the storm brewing within me. "He said he was going to annul our engagement, and he made it clear that he loves Alice."

My aunt's eyes widened, but her surprise quickly gave way to a composed facade. It seemed that she had anticipated this revelation, despite her earlier anger. "What are you talking about, Elenore?" she questioned, her voice steady and devoid of any genuine surprise.

I took a deep breath, looking directly into her eyes as I repeated my words with conviction. "Gabriel, the man I had agreed to marry, confessed his true feelings for Alice, his sister.," I stated firmly. "He told me that he couldn't go through with our engagement because his heart belonged to her."

Silence enveloped the room as my aunt absorbed the weight of my words. She maintained a cool demeanor, her expression revealing little emotion. "He... he never mentioned this to me, oh.... This is unexpected." she murmured, her voice betraying a hint of falsehood. "I had no idea." I could see through her facade, but she continued on, her tone softening slightly. "Look, dear, I didn't know this. Let's talk calmly," she suggested, though her resentment was still palpable. "Meg, fetch us some tea," she called out to our servant.

Meg nodded and swiftly left the room to fulfill my aunt's request. Aunt Brute guided me to a chair, her grip on my hand a mixture of false concern and manipulation. "My dear niece, you know that I love you," she began, her words dripping with insincerity. "But even if you say this out of jealousy, we cannot turn back time. It's a regrettable situation, but I believe there is one solution. He can't merry Alice you know this. He have to marry you."

I knew all too well what solution she was about to propose , and a wave of anger and disgust washed over me. it seemed her true intentions were far from noble.

"A night with him, my dear. And he will have to marry you. You can't give up just because he said he loves Alice. He is a man do not forget." she said, her smile twisted and wrecked. Her words hung in the air, a cruel suggestion that shattered my trust in her.

I stared at her . "Aunt Brute, I cannot believe you would stoop so low," I replied, my voice quivering with a mixture of anger and hurt. "Is this what you think of me? That I would sacrifice my dignity and self-respect for a man who doesn't love me? I'm not live my life over a man who do not love me."

Her smile faltered, her true intentions exposed. " Why potion isn't working" she whispered. I didn't understand what is she talking about. She averted her gaze, unable to meet my eyes. "Elenore, it's not about sacrificing anything. It's about securing your future , position, ensuring that you have a husband who will provide for you,and position make you center of attention." she reasoned, her voice tinged with desperation.

"But what about love, respect,Aunt Brute?" I asked, my voice filled with newfound determination. "Shouldn't that be the foundation of a marriage? I will not settle for a loveless union, even if it means facing uncertainty and hardship."

Aunt Brute's expression hardened, her true nature revealed. "You are being foolish, Elenore. Love doesn't put food on the table or provide security, buy you whatever you want. " she retorted, her frustration seeping through.

"Aunt, I will not accept this, and if you are not supporting me, I will go back home. And I don't think you will " I stand up and go to my closet and try to wear my clothes without any help. " I already prepared my bags yesterday."

Her eyes narrowed, her anger unabated. "You think you can just leave and find happiness elsewhere?I'm your aunt and you are my responsibility. If I say eat you will eat , if I say stay you will stay." she scoffed. "You will regret this decision, Elenore. You will see the consequences of your actions." As I was about to leave, she grabbed my hand. "You're not going anywhere, you little..." I pushed her away and said, "Watch me." She called the servants and told them, "Do not let Elenore go anywhere." She yelled at the maid, but I hit them and said, "Let me go this instant."

As the maid's grip tightened on my arm, I felt a surge of frustration and anger. "Let me go this instant! I'm Eleanor Hendrix" I demanded, my voice trembling with a mixture of defiance and desperation.

But my aunt's command echoed in the room, and more servants arrived, their eyes filled with confusion and uncertainty. They hesitated, torn between their loyalty to my aunt and their empathy for my situation.

With a burst of determination, I mustered all my strength and broke free from the maid's grasp. I hurriedly grabbed my already packed bags and made a beeline for the door. The servants moved to block my path.

"Aunt Brute, I am leaving," I declared, my voice filled with a newfound resolve. "I refuse to stay in a place where my dreams are stifled and my happiness is disregarded. I deserve better, and I will find it elsewhere. And I will never forget this."

My aunt's face contorted with rage as she realized that her attempts to control and manipulate me were failing. "You are making a terrible mistake, Elenore!" she seethed, her voice laced with venom. "You will regret this, mark my words!"

As the words slipped from my trembling lips, a chilling silence enveloped the room. My aunt's face contorted with a mixture of anger and disbelief, her eyes narrowing as she struggled to comprehend the magnitude of my defiance. It was as if the air itself held its breath, anticipating the storm that was about to be unleashed.

But before she could formulate a response, a sudden onslaught of objects rained down upon me. The room transformed into a chaotic battleground, as if the very furniture and possessions had turned against me. Each strike stung like a venomous serpent, leaving me battered and disoriented. I could feel the hot blood rushing to my head, causing everything to become blurry and dark. It was overwhelming, and I felt a sudden wave of exhaustion wash over me, lulling me into an unexpected sleep.

" No you can't leave."
