Chapter 12 - De@l went wrong

I looked at him in confusion.

"Tell me the last message he sent to himself," he said. I opened Tristan's phone and told him the last message.

"It says that: I thought I was the player; little did I know, I was the pawn," my voice broke at the last part. The person in front of me, who didn't even once break eye contact, was now staring at the floor.

"Let's trade, an answer for an answer," I said, and without giving him the chance to agree or decline, I asked him, "How did you know I had the phone?"

"I traced the phone, on the day of his murder it was last found in the hospital. Then it was turned off. Now that you turned it on, I found it" he answered, still looking at the floor.

"Were you, after his murder," he looked at me "approached by someone anonymous and strange. If yes, then what did he say? What did you see?"

"That's three questions" I said.

"No, one question. Three different ways to convey it properly so you don't leave anything out"

"Yeah, I did.

He wore a chocolate brown suit and was a little taller than you. He approached me, in the elevator and said :

From one pawn to the other, you are not the queen but a remorse less murderer.

Some times I wonder, how can you all...

after all you have done.... ;sleep so soundly... when a small mistake of mine.... costed me my night's peace.

Don't worry, wanna-be queen, when the actual queen is the warrior ; the

kingdom needs a puppet.

And then he left."

I felt a single tear roll down my cheek.

" I didn't kill anyone, and I don't know what he meant by it" I said, my voice uneven. I felt the tears burn in the back of my eyes.

I expected that the person sitting in front of me would say something nice but he proved me wrong.

"You did" he said, getting up from his seat.

"You killed Tristan,... internally" he said as he went off. I called out to him from behind, "Hey! I... I.. How did you know my name?!" but I don't think he heard it and even if he did, he gave no sign of it.

I got up from the chair. Lost in my own world. Different thoughts dwelled in my mind.

What if he was the murderer?

What if he just wanted to know if I knew?

What if he was the elevator boy?

What if he sent that boy?

What if he was sent by Edgar?

What if...

And before I could think of something else, I was brought back to reality by the sound of horns.

I was in the middle of the road, and a car was coming towards me. Before I knew it, it was too late.
