Eirian's words were surprising because he had never wanted to get along with anyone ever since he realized that no one wanted to get along with him, which led him to distrust anyone despite how good their intentions were.
And even more surprising that Eirian's words were familiar. It was familiar because it was Azrael's words to him the first time they met.
That was what Azrael told Eirian before Eirian walked out on him because Azrael really wanted to be on friendly terms with his favorite character and the protagonist of this novel. Of course, he didn't expect to ever be friends with him.
He did plan on having Adham and Caspian be the first ones whom Eirian wanted to get along with. He knew it was difficult but it might have been possible.
