Chapter 4 - Election buzz is a lie

Returning to school after a bout of illness felt like stepping into a familiar world, yet something had shifted. The halls echoed with the usual sounds of laughter and chatter, but today, a subtle excitement hummed beneath the surface.

Tada, always the friendly face, spotted me in the hallway. "Hey, Natsuki! Feeling better?"

"Yeah, much better. Thanks for asking," I replied, genuinely grateful for his concern. A quick glance confirmed Yamamoto-san passing by, her radiant smile offering a silent reassurance.

As we chatted, the bell rang, announcing the start of the first class. Students filed into their seats, and the teacher entered, holding a piece of paper that seemed to carry a weight of importance.

"Good morning, everyone. Before we begin today's lesson, I have an important announcement."

The room fell silent, anticipation hanging in the air.

"We are approaching the student council election season. As tradition goes, it's time for new leaders to step forward and take charge of the student body."

A ripple of whispers swept through the class.

The teacher's gaze met mine, and he continued, "And this year, I have an announcement to make. Natsuki, you've scored the highest marks ever in the annual test. Congratulations!"

The class erupted into applause, a mix of surprise and pride welling within me. I hadn't expected such a public acknowledgment, and for a moment, I felt the weight of newfound expectations settling on my shoulders.

The teacher's voice brought me back to the present. "In light of your exceptional performance, Natsuki, I strongly encourage you to consider joining the student council. It would be a valuable experience, and your leadership skills would undoubtedly benefit the entire student body."

The class resumed, but my mind lingered on the teacher's words. Student council? It wasn't something I had considered, but the idea of contributing to the school's community appealed to me.

After the class, I headed to the spot designated for student council sign-ups. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of anticipation. As I approached, I noticed a girl already there, her eyes scanning the sign-up sheet with a focused intensity.

"So, you're my competition this year," she said, a confident smile on her face. It was the current student council president, her posture exuding a blend of charisma and determination.

Caught off guard, I managed a friendly smile. "I suppose so. It looks like we'll be facing off."

She chuckled, "May the best candidate win, then. It's always good to have healthy competition."

As we exchanged a few more words, the reality of the upcoming election settled in. The challenge, it seemed, had just begun. I filled in my name on the sheet, contemplating the possibilities that lay ahead
