Chapter 43 - Apology

After a crisis, people often forget its origin. However, that applies to ordinary officers. The managers, on the other hand, had to think about it.

The root of this crisis was the red-dressed female corpse, and now Luke Prescott's body was missing. Where were these two monsters hiding? Nobody knew.

The police had dispatched helicopters and a large number of forces for the search. They had released many police dogs and even used infrared detectors. The disappearance of six officers and the horrifying video footage were all reminders to the authorities that any carelessness could lead to disastrous consequences.

However, they did not plan to reveal this news. The ensuing panic would surely be brutal. The town's residents knew about the intense gunfire last night, but the police did not provide an answer as to why, and no one dared to go out to find one.

While the officers initiated a comprehensive search, Chief Louise and Officer Patton had already driven to Jason's residence. After last night's incidents, even if Chief Louise did not believe in things that only appeared in horror movies, she had to admit that they did exist in this world.

The car stopped in front of Jason's house. Both of them went up to the porch where the door was open. Chief Louise knocked on the door and said, "Mr. Jason? I'm sorry, but I have to come to you now."

Jason simply nodded, "Come in."

After they entered, they saw Joseph sitting on a couch a bit further into the living room. He stood up and shook hands with them. Jason just nodded at them, not moving forward to shake hands and instead said, "I'm going to wash dishes." They arrived just after he finished breakfast.

They had no choice but to sit down. Chief Louise whispered to Joseph, "He definitely won't be fond of me, but... besides him, I can't think of anyone else. Of course... if he could draw on your palm again, I would prefer to deal with you."

"I can hear you...Chief Louise," Jason's voice came from the kitchen.

Chief Louise stuck out her tongue and winked at Joseph. Suddenly, she seemed less like a strong and competent police chief and more like a young girl.

"He's a good man, he won't mind," Joseph laughed, saying to Chief Louise, "Of course, I'm saying this for him to hear. He definitely can hear it."

"No, Joseph, I didn't hear anything you said," Jason's voice came from the kitchen again, and everyone laughed. The two were acting like a comedy duo.

The initially awkward atmosphere disappeared, and both Chief Louise and Officer Patton relaxed considerably. They began to feel hopeful about the purpose of their visit.

"I can apologize to him..." Chief Louise mumbled under her breath.

"The key is whether Jason accepts your apology!" Joseph heard and couldn't help but laugh.

Chief Louise cleared her throat awkwardly. She had to continue the conversation, so she lowered her voice and said to Joseph, "Hey, don't do that, you know what kind of disastrous consequences we will face if Mr. Jason doesn't show up? You saw the situation last night, no one wants to lose their loved ones... An officer in the town died because of this, and five state police..."

"It's because you don't believe Jason!" Joseph had a lot to say about this, "So... don't put this on Jason, it was your stubbornness that killed them..."

This statement might have hit a nerve for Chief Louise. She knew in her heart that if it weren't for her stubbornness, that officer might not have died. Everything could have been prevented. So, her mood immediately fell to the bottom, and she even felt a bit disgusted with herself.

"Louise... it's not your fault, even I... at the beginning, I had some misunderstandings about Mr. Jason," Officer Patton comforted her from the side, "So... even if we made a mistake, it's both of our fault..."

Chief Louise wanted to say something, but she choked up, tears welled up in her eyes. Joseph had no intention of comforting her. This woman finally paid the price for her stubbornness, but the price seemed a bit high...

"It's not your fault, Chief Louise!" Another voice came from the side. Louise looked up to see Jason standing in front of her, handing her a hot cup of tea.

"Thank you!" Chief Louise whispered. Jason's reassurance was much better than Officer Patton's. Louise took the offered cup of tea and said thank you. Jason handed another cup to Officer Patton and then went to pour two more cups, one for Joseph and one for himself. He sat opposite Sheriff Louise, holding his tea, and their interaction felt casual rather than imposing.

"What did you want to say?" Jason took a sip of tea, placed his cup on the coffee table, and spoke gently to Sheriff Louise. His voice remained soothing, not becoming imposing now that he had been proven right. This made Sheriff Louise feel more at ease, considering she came here with a task.

"I apologize, Mr. Jason. I made a misjudgment, and that misjudgment led me to make a fatal mistake," Sheriff Louise sincerely said. She had paid the price for her mistake, and it weighed heavily on her, making her more genuine in her attitude.

Jason shook his head. "There are many things in this world that we, as humans, are unaware of. If I hadn't seen or even heard of it before, it would be difficult for me to believe too. Besides, the police should rely on evidence, not just the word of a medium, to make accurate judgments. I understand..."

Louise felt grateful hearing his words.

She straightened her posture, looking at Jason with determination. "I didn't just come here to apologize. I also want... if possible, Mr. Jason, could you help us find the other two? The woman in the red dress and Mr. Prescott's body? They are extremely dangerous now, and I have no idea where they might appear tonight."

Jason smiled at her. "You don't have to worry about tonight, someone will help you."

"This... isn't it you, Mr. Jason?" Sheriff Louise grew anxious. "Those bastards surely don't know how to deal with those zombies. Especially the woman in the red dress, according to the pattern, she must be the most dangerous..."

Jason nodded and said, "Joseph, do you know how to deal with those people?"

"Jason... What? How could I possibly know... Oh, I understand now!" Joseph smirked, realizing that besides Jason, there was another person who could help—Mr. Kote. Because on Mr. Kote's palm, there was a small sword that Jason had drawn. However, Joseph looked at Jason with confusion and asked, "But... what are you going to do tonight?"

"I have my own things to take care of. But... before that, Sheriff Louise, I would like to ask for your help." Jason turned to look at Sheriff Louise and didn't wait for her response before continuing, "The first thing is to go to the lakeside and catch a fish. Then burn the fish, um... I don't mean for you to roast and eat it... but to actually burn it, pour gasoline on it, and ignite it... just like that."

"Catch a fish?" Sheriff Louise couldn't help but be surprised. But she stopped herself from saying more. She didn't want to provoke Jason's displeasure, as she would still rely on him.

"Alright, I will catch it! And I promise not to eat it," Sheriff Louise nodded.

Jason smiled faintly and didn't say anything more. He took a sip of tea and looked at Sheriff Louise with an expectant gaze, saying, "I have already told Joseph how to deal with the woman in the red dress. You can discuss the process with him."

"But... he doesn't have the drawing on his hand anymore..." Sheriff Louise was still worried about that.

"No, it's not just Joseph who has a sword on his hand," Jason shook his head and smiled. "I have already given you the answer. Why not arrange a meeting with Joseph and discuss it while having a drink or something to eat?"

Sheriff Louise knew she couldn't stay any longer. She stood up and reached out her hand to Joseph. "I hope we have a pleasant cooperation!"
