Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14: A FLEETING INSTANCE OF TRANQUILITY

Under the cloak of darkness, they stealthily arrived, their presence unnoticed by all. Slipping into the house, they made their way to the cozy sitting room. "Mother, where art thou?" Mellisah's voice echoed through the empty space, met with silence. Panic gripped her heart as thoughts raced through her mind. "Could she be trapped in the void? Oh, dear heavens, no! That cannot be!" Determined, she summoned her children to aid in the search for their missing matriarch. Bridget ventured into the garden, while Clint scoured every nook and cranny. Fortune smiled upon Bridget as she stumbled upon their beloved mother, nestled amidst the emerald blades of grass. "Hey, bro! Mommy! I've found her!" Bridget's voice rang out, beckoning Mellisah and Clint to hasten to the scene. As they reached their destination, Mellisah's face lit up with relief. "Oh, precious mother! She is safe, sound, and in good health. You see, my dear children, she must be weary from venturing beyond her comfort zone, for she believes that the sky is the only limit."Laughter erupted from the children, their joyful sounds jolting Beauty from her slumber. Still groggy, she mumbled, "Oh, there you are. I've been searching for you since morning, and now it's dark. Thank God you're here. Where have you been? And how on earth did I end up here? Ouch! My head is pounding." Her questions poured out like a torrent, a whirlwind of confusion engulfing her. Mellisah intervened, urging her mother to hush and enter the house. "We'll explain everything once you've taken a painkiller and a sip of pure water." Reluctantly, they all retreated indoors, where Mellisah and the children unraveled the mysteries for Beauty. Skepticism clouded her mind as she recounted her own recollections, insisting that her last memory was searching for them as the rain loomed overhead. They roared with laughter, recounting every detail of their adventures on the battlefield. Clint, always one to share the tales of the most formidable and captivating creatures they had encountered. But poor mother Beauty, she could only keep her lips sealed, for she couldn't grasp the subject matter of their lively conversation. The night wore on, the clock striking ten, yet their joy in each other's company was so immense that none of them wished to retreat to their separate sleeping quarters.

"I must find respite," mother Beauty finally declared. Mellisah, ever the problem solver, proposed a solution - they should choose a single room to sleep together for just this one night. Bridget chimed in, suggesting the kitchen as their slumber spot. Clint, however, protested vehemently, exclaiming, "Are you out of your mind? Do you want cockroaches frolicking in my blankets?" Mellisah and Beauty chuckled, and Beauty offered an alternative, suggesting the sitting room as their sleeping haven, assuring them that there were no cockroaches to be found there. Clint's face lit up, thinking the suggestion was in his favor, but alas, Bridget dashed his hopes by interjecting, "Granny, cockroaches can still migrate from the kitchen to our chosen spot." Laughter filled the room once more.

"But fear not, we shall lock the door tight, rendering them unable to invade our sanctuary," Clint argued confidently. You know what kiddos, it seems like you're destined to bicker until the break of dawn. So here's a wild suggestion, how about we venture into the great outdoors for our slumber?" Mellisah proposed. "What! Mommy, outside? Absolutely not, I refuse to partake in such an endeavor. Do you want the remnants of deceased critters to rain down upon us? I'd rather endure the company of cockroaches frolicking in my blankets than sleep under the open sky." Clint objected. Laughter filled the room as they pitied Clint, who was more concerned about creepy crawlies invading his sleeping quarters than finding comfort. In the end, they compromised and settled on sleeping in the cozy confines of the sitting room, drifting off into the realm of dreams. In the early hours of the day, Bridget curiously inquired of her brother the number of cockroaches he had shared his slumber with. Her brother, utterly bored by the question, responded with a sigh, "Oh, spare me the inquiry. Behold!" he exclaimed, unveiling the layers of blankets to reveal a multitude of the repulsive creatures. "Ugh! I despise these abominations." Bridget, taken aback, reminded him of his previous assurance that the pests would be unable to infiltrate the sitting room. "Pray, enlighten me on how they managed to breach our sanctuary," she demanded. Their argument escalated to the point where it roused Mellisah from her slumber. Sensing the potential for a physical altercation, she intervened, urging them to cease their bickering. "You both possess the same strength and influence that I have bestowed upon you. Cease these foolish disputes," Mellisah declared. Heeding their mother's wise words, they abandoned their quarrel and commenced conversing with one another in a civil manner.
