Chapter 1 - Our First Meeting

A cool fall breeze rustles past my brown hair, reminding me where my reality is, not my daydreams of mystical fantasies. I glance up at the board as my teacher talks. Some words flow through my head, but I already know them. I like my history teacher, and he teaches history in a fun way that would make it easy to learn. But I already know everything about this class.

I have a lot of free time, so I use it to work ahead in all my classes. No one would know it, though, because I average a B grade in all my classes. It's not that I'm bad at studying or anything. I don't want to stand out too much. I have had enough of it for a lifetime.

I glance around the room, my gaze yearning for any source of input. My eyes land on Erica, the most popular girl in school and by far the most beautiful. Her long, straight, golden brown hair runs below her shoulders and gently sways like a willow tree in the wind.

I sometimes think, "I would love to date her," but alas, I am just an average guy, and many other guys better looking than me have asked her out and got rejected. That is if she is even into guys. I am reminded of when we first met in high school; it was the first day of the school year, and she had just transferred in.

Everyone crowded around her, trying to get close to the soon-to-be new Miss Popular. I glanced into the huddle of kids and saw a look I knew all too well. I was in the perfect harmony of average, and yet I messed it all up in that one moment.

I pushed my way through the circle and stood before her, put out my hand, and said,

"You look new here. I can show you around. I know some good study spots."

She looked me in the eyes, and I saw how pretty she was up close. Her blue eyes seemed to mirror the sky perfectly. After a moment, she took my hand, and I led her away from the mob of students. As their sighs and scowles faded, I slowed and looked back at her.

"Hi, I'm Chase. Nice to meet you."

"I'm Erica. And thanks for that back there." She replied in such a way that I questioned if she said it.
