Chapter 4 - Chapter Four

" Where are we going? "

Emily asked Alex for what seemed like the eight time, still to no answer.

His eyes were focused on the road, his hands held onto the steering wheel tightly so that his knuckles showed a slight white.

Emily crossed her arms over her chest and puffed up her cheeks. A seething anger was radiating through her. Her cheeks looked flushed and very pink.

Alex sensed her demeanor and drove into a corner, bringing the car to a halt.

He chuckled calmly and turned to face Emily.

" What's with the puffiness and restlessness? Hmnn? "

Emily rolled down the window glass and looked outside. She tugged on the sleeves of her dress.

" I've asked more than five times where we're headed. At least say something and stop making me feel stupid."

Her eyes were still looking out the window. Alex sighed and smiled coyly.

" Do you really wanna know or do I keep it a surprise ? Hmnnn mama?"

" I wanna know. I'm not a bag of potatoes you'd just move around. "

Alex's face became stern and he flexed his arms. She spoke to him with no respect or fear. He hated it. He turned on the ignition and continued driving. He looked out his window too and took a deep breath of air.

The weather seemed cool. The kind of perfect weather for ice cream and snooker. The sun was hidden behind the numerous clouds that formed.

Alex focused his eyes back on the road.

" We're going to see your father "

Emily's eyes shot up to look at Alex.

" Why? "

She asked. Her voice sounded hushed.

" There are some things we need to discuss and clarify. He mentioned that I shouldn't tell you, but I can't stand your stubborn head. "

Alex responded. He took a left bend and smiled at a little boy who was dragging his mum to play ball with him at the nearby park.

Emily's mind was in jumbles. Why did they have to see her father and why now? She wasn't ready to face him just yet, whatever the reason may be.

" Please turn the car around. I don't want to see him."

Her voice was small and shallow. She wrapped her arms around herself as though she was cold.

Alex noticed the shift in her mood and slowed down his pace, pulling into a parking lot. A sinister look played on his face.

" But we're here already."

….

The room was a luscious mix of grey and teal. Black curtains hung at the windows, releasing a dark atmosphere. Sophisticated perfume filled the air and the only sound that could be heard was coming from an old TV show. The source of light was a shallow bulb in the center of the room.

Emily walked slowly. Has Alex lied to her ? Because this wasn't her father's office, neither his house. She fiddled with her fingers and pulled on her sleeves at intervals.

As though Alex had sensed her feel, he spoke to her whilst dropping himself lightly on the sofa.

" He wanted a serene place, so did I "

" Oh "

Emily responded. She also sat on the single sofa at the other side.

" So where's he? "

" You ask a lot . It irritates me. Learn that and be patient. "

Alex's tone was harsh and commanding. He was radiating an aura Emily couldn't quite pin. She took out her phone from her bag and became engrossed in it.

Alex pulled out his phone and dialed a number. It didn't take up to three rings for the person at the other end to pick up. Alex's face was stern and serious. He looked somewhat annoyed. He placed the phone on his left ear.

" If there's one thing I'm sure you know Steve, is that I hate waiting. I'm not about to sit here wasting my time , waiting for you for a deal you're pleading with me to seal am I? "

He raised a brow in inquisition as though, Steve could see him. He stretched his right arm and crossed one leg over the other.

' Who is this man?! '

Emily thought. From the mention of name, she knew he was talking to her father. She had never heard or seen anyone who could talk to him like that. But, now there's Alex.

From the response he got on the phone, Alex took a sip of the champagne a waiter had served them earlier. He dropped the glass tenderly and swirled his mouth, savouring the taste of the wine.

" If in ten minutes you're not here, consider the deal null and me the upper hand as always. "

Alex said putting down the phone.

He said nothing more but continued sipping from his glass , while doing some work on the tablet Emily hadn't noticed he came along with.

She didn't know the details of Alex's conversation with her father but she knew it was well about her. Deep down she wished her father would delay. Maybe if the deal were to be null she'd be set free from this marriage. She let out a deep breath and sipped her drink as well.
