On night there's three swordsmen patrolled outside Padas City within the depths of the forest, ensuring the protection of civilians against lurking demons.
"It's quite tiresome to keep watch here. Do any of you have food?" remarked one of the patrollers, whom we shall call Rol, conversing with Mando.
"Luckily, I have some Puto with me, freshly cooked by my wife!" exclaimed Mando. "Wow, you're fortunate to have a wife. I don't even have one," retorted Ram, his stomach growling audibly. "My stomach seems to be singing. Mando, perhaps..."
"You're pitiful. Next time, bring your own provisions, Rol. Here, take this," Mando interrupted, handing him some food.
"Thank you, brother Mando..." Rol said as he swiftly devoured the foods.
"What about you, Ram? Would you like some?"
"I'm still full, thanks."
Suddenly, a crying baby's noise pierced the air, prompting them to draw their swords without hesitation.
"Did you hear that?" Rol asked.
"Yes, it came from the right. I knew something was amiss in this area," Ram replied, glancing behind him and noticing a movement.
"Why are you staring at me? Is there something here?!" Rol exclaimed.
"Easy there, don't shout..."
"I'm sorry, brother Mando," Rol apologized before a tentacle-like hand suddenly appeared at his feet, yanking him down. They noticed it and attempted to reach for Rol, but it vanished in a blink of an eye due to its incredible speed. "ROL!!!!!" they heard Rol's loud cry, and abruptly halted in their tracks, rushing to his aid.
"Here's where the voice is coming from!" exclaimed Ram as they witnessed Rol's lifeless, bloodless body. Mando fell to his knees in tears, while Ram, devoid of emotion except for anger, stood there. After a few seconds, they heard the voice of a child—not crying, but laughing. Mando stood up and said, "Ram, I'll handle this. Make your way to the gate and report everything that happened here."
"But Mando, I can't risk losing you like Rol!"
"If it comes to that, I trust you to tell my family that I love them."
"But Mando—"
"Move! He's almost here! Hurry!"
With no other choice, Ram left, and he saw Mando, now smiling confidently, ready to face the demon head-on. As Ram sprinted toward the gate, Mando turned to confront the demon's lightning-fast attack. When it struck, Mando's oversized sword cracked, surprising the demon. It recoiled, noticing its attacking hand was burned and smoking.
Demoniacal laugh.
"You still managed to laugh after what you did to my companion!"
"What do I care? Your companion tasted awful anyway. But don't worry, since you were able to block my attack, I'll give you this. Red beans. If you eat them, you'll become one of us, strong. Don't you want that?"
"I don't need that. I need to kill you."
"He he he... he changes his face to a disgusting demonic visage If you can!"
The demon suddenly vanished, but Mando quickly devised a plan. He grabbed silver powder from his pocket and scattered it around him. When the demon attempted to lunge at him again, it felt a burning sensation in its hand. Sensing this, Mando raised his massive sword and swung at the demon. However, the demon grinned and evaded, instead impaling Mando in the stomach, causing blood to gush from his mouth. The demon then disappeared abruptly, reappearing at the top of a nearby tree branch.
"Hehehehe, what now, human?!"
Mando lay gasping, his breaths ragged and labored, the sound echoing in the silence, his coughs still tinged with blood.
"Cough It seems my time has come," he murmured, an image of his wife and son flashing in his mind, and Mando smiled.
"Why are you smiling, huh?!" Mando suddenly shouted loudly, then lunged at the tree where the demon was perched, swinging his sword and severing the trunk. The demon was taken aback. 'This human's strength is extraordinary,' thought the demon as it fell from the tree. It spun downward, attacking as it fell. Mando quickly grabbed the demon's right hand. "What now?" he taunted the demon, then released his sword, punching the demon in its left eye. The result was the demon's face being disfigured. The demon's left hand, now in the shape of a dagger, stabbed Mando in his abdomen, causing more blood to cough up. The demon then attempted to escape, but Mando had a firm grip on its hand, preventing any movement, especially with its left hand buried in Mando's abdomen. "Where do you think you're going... you're staying here!" Mando declared. Slowly, the sun began to set, casting an ominous glow, and the demon grew more aggressive.
"Let me go!!!" it demanded, attempting to bite Mando's neck, but finding its skin too tough to pierce.
As the sun dipped lower on the horizon, its rays intensified, casting a golden hue over the scene. The demon squirmed in agony as the sunlight burned its skin, weakening its already waning strength.
"S-stop... the sunlight!" it hissed, struggling against Mando's grip.
But Mando held firm, his gaze unwavering. "You're not going anywhere," he whispered through clenched teeth, his strength fading with each passing moment.
Meanwhile, from a distance, Rol, with his keen eyes, spotted the struggle between Mando and the demon. He gestured urgently to his fellow swordsmen, signaling where Mando was. Together, they rushed to the scene.
Upon reaching Mando, they found him lying on the ground, his body weakened and bloodied, still grappling with the demon.
"Mando!" cried one of the swordsmen, rushing to his side.
But it was too late. Mando's grip loosened, and with a final effort, he pushed the demon away just as the last rays of sunlight enveloped it. With a shriek of agony, the demon disintegrated into dust, vanquished by the light.
The swordsmen gathered around Mando's lifeless form, grief etched on their faces. They had lost a friend, a comrade, a brother.
Tears flowed freely as they knelt beside him, honoring his sacrifice and mourning his passing. In the fading light of the day, they paid their respects to Mando.
