Chapter 7 - The Great Journey (3)

[--- Day 1 ---]

In the heart of the Kastrov forest, a dance of curiosity and fear unfolded. The groveguardian cub, a majestic creature of the forest, circled around Ryan, sniffing the air with a mix of wariness and wonder. To the cub, this moment was a puzzle, an enigma unlike anything it had ever encountered in its young life. The forest, a haven of mysteries and secrets, had always been its home, yet never had it come across a situation like its current one...

The cub, though young, was a testament to the strength and intelligence of its kind. Gifted with mana and a strong core, it was already a formidable presence among its peers. For groveguardians, intelligence, cunning, and strength were not just traits but essential survival tools. Family and pack were its world, but the strange anomaly before it piqued a different kind of interest – a curiosity that defied its usual instincts.

Using its natural affinity with earth mana, the cub sent out a pulse, an echo of energy that should have revealed the human it sensed but could not see. The response, or lack thereof, drew it closer, driven by a mix of hunger, fatigue, and an insatiable curiosity. Meanwhile, its mother, a towering figure of wisdom and strength, watched from a distance. Groveguardians, even in their youth, were impressive in size, but the adults, particularly those of sage level, were truly awe-inspiring. The mother, having followed her cub out of concern, now observed the strange scene unfolding.

The mother's presence was a comforting yet commanding aura. She sent out her own pulse of mana, a silent message to her child that was as clear as any spoken word: return to safety. The cub, sensing its mother's urgency, obeyed immediately, its body trembling with a mix of excitement and fear. It knew its mother's prowess and understood that whatever was happening, it would be safe once it returned to their sanctuary.

Ryan, meanwhile, stood frozen, his heart racing as he faced the mother groveguardian. The enormity of his situation weighed heavily upon him. The beast before him was not just any creature of the forest; it was a being of reason and power, capable of understanding and reacting to situations with a depth that rivaled that of humans.

The mother groveguardian, with a wisdom borne of years and a deep connection to the earth, continued to probe the area with its mana. It was an expert in the manipulation of natural energies, and its message, carried on the very mana that filled the air, was unmistakable: "Show yourself and leave...before you die."

Ryan, pale and overwhelmed by the gravity of his predicament, knew his luck was running thin. The forest of Kastrov, with its ancient secrets and guardians, was not a place for the uninitiated. He was an intruder here, a fact made painfully clear by the imposing creature before him. His every instinct screamed for him to flee, to escape the deadly gaze of the groveguardian, but he was rooted to the spot, caught in the interplay of fear, awe, and the realization that his journey in this mysterious world might be nearing its abrupt end. As the groveguardian mother waited for a response, the air thick with tension, Ryan stood at the crossroads of his fate in Kastrov. His choices in these critical moments would define not just his journey but his very survival in this land of ancient wonders and hidden dangers.

Ryan, with his ass on the damp forest floor, felt an overwhelming sense of dread as he stared up at the imposing figure of the groveguardian. Its towering presence, easily reaching ten meters in height, loomed like a sentinel of the ancient woods. In that moment of terror, a whisper, almost ethereal and chillingly close, echoed in his ear, urging him to reveal himself or face certain death.

"My lord, remain calm," the artifact in his mind counseled. "Grove guardians may seem fierce, but they are typically rational creatures. Its formidable appearance is a reflection of its concern for its pack, especially with a human so close to their sanctuary."

"What should I do, then?" Ryan shot back, his voice tinged with frustration and fear. The path he had been following, seemingly safe and guided, had led him to this perilous confrontation.

The artifact responded with a tone of reassuring wisdom. "You must stay composed, my lord. This world is fraught with danger and unexpected trials. It's essential to adapt, to learn to navigate these challenges calmly. Your future is filled with great potential, but it requires a mindset attuned to the realities of this world. With this in mind will now suppress the anomaly that has kept you hidden, forcing you to confront this first true challenge."

Ryan took a deep breath, reflecting on the artifact's words. Since arriving in this new world, he had approached life much like the protagonists in the reincarnation novels he once read. Those characters were often endowed with powerful abilities or systems, while he had only his wits and a mysterious, ancient book etched into his mind. His decision to embrace this new world, made hastily in the wake of his arrival, now seemed naïve. Facing the groveguardian, a creature known for its generally passive nature, Ryan realized the depth of his misunderstanding. The artifact, it appeared, had been responsible for the strange phenomenon of animals ignoring him—a protective veil that was now being lifted.

In the few seconds that passed during this realization, Ryan slowly rose to his feet. "Suppress it, as you said. I'll handle this," he declared with newfound resolve.

The groveguardian, which had been scanning the area for the elusive human, suddenly halted. Its penetrating gaze fixed on Ryan, who had just appeared before it. Confusion mingled with curiosity in its eyes. It was accustomed to humans in the forest being heavily armed or protected, yet Ryan stood there, conspicuously under-equipped for the dangers of Kastrov.

A deep, resonant voice filled the air, a blend of a soft tone and a growling undertone. "What are you, human?" The question, directed at Ryan, carried a weight of genuine perplexity.

Ryan, now fully visible to the creature, felt a surge of adrenaline. He understood the significance of this encounter. It was not just a test of survival but an opportunity to establish his place in this new, wild world. Standing before the groveguardian, he realized that communication and understanding were his only viable tools.

He took a cautious step forward, his eyes locked with the creature's. "I am Ryan, a traveler who has found himself in Kastrov due to unfortunate circumstances. I mean no harm to you or your pack," he began, his voice steady despite the pounding of his heart. "I am lost, seeking my path in this land."

The groveguardian's eyes narrowed slightly, scrutinizing Ryan with an intelligence that belied its bestial form. The forest around them seemed to hold its breath, the usual rustling of leaves and distant animal calls falling silent.

"You are not like the others," the groveguardian rumbled, its voice echoing through the trees. "You carry no weapons, no armor. You wander into the heart of Kastrov, unguarded and unprepared. Why should I believe you pose no threat?"
