Marek suddenly appeared to David's left, his cutlass threatening to slice right through David.

David's sword was already there, and Marek's cutlass bounced away.
"Hahahaha! So you saw it!" Marek had an approving smile on his face, and David grinned in response.
"Of course I did! I've done something similar before, but I've never used a tentacle like that." David couldn't help but admire Marek.
At the last moment, when his opponent's eyes were fixed on the trajectory of the weapon, he would summon a tentacle, using it as an extra limb, to move in a completely counter intuitive way.
Marek made use of he fact that they were able to move in a way totally different to a normal limb, to suddenly change direction.
It wasn't that Marek was disappearing, it was just that he was moving in an completely unexpected direction.
