They are getting closer that's why they can't let their guard down. At least Barry felt that he shouldn't be let his guard down because Elaine looked so agitated that she forgot to keep an eye on her surroundings.
"Be careful." This was the umpteenth time Barry had said that to her. But the girl never listened to him and continued to drive with her eyes straight ahead.
Even though she sometimes responded with a nod or a brief murmur, Barry immediately found her returning to her act a few moments later.
So because of that Barry felt that he no longer needed to say anything. Instead, he increased his alertness.
Of course, Barry also warned Victoria not to take her eyes off her surroundings. The calm girl nodded.
Barry was grateful for her existence because then there was another pair of eyes in this car that could see danger coming.
