Chapter 19 - I hate math

"Travis!" Naomi ran down and hugged him. "You grew taller!"

"No Naomi, you just got shorter." He said with a serious tone.

"What?!" She exclaimed shocked and Travis laughed. "Really?"

"I'm just joking."

"That's a relief." She sighed. "So how are things here in school?"

"Boring, but it just got interesting." He said.

"Why is that?" She wondered.

"Because you're here!" He said and she blinked twice.

"Travis, when did you start being flirty?"

"Am I? I didn't notice." He rubbed the back of his neck looking away. "Anyhow, tomorrow's the girls contest, wanna check out the stage?"

"Is that even a question? Of course I wanna check out the stage."

They both went to the auditorium. Everywhere had been decorated and the stage was magnificent. Naomi smiled while nodding her head.

"It's good, it's good." She said and gave him a thumbs up.

"I knew you'd like it." He said confidently and then the bell rang. "It's time for dinner. I'm starving."

"Wait, don't you wanna freshen up first? I can tell you let the sweat dry off before meeting me."

"Oh!" He exclaimed. "Then I'll go back to the dorm. Go ahead and have dinner without me."

While Naomi was having dinner, she heard something. A group of boys having dinner close to her were discussing the tennis competition, the highlight of the sports day competition.

"Hey, I heard the contestants from South Stream College are already in town." Reuben began while munching on his food.

"Really? But the competition is the day after tomorrow!" Cloy said.

"Yeah but it seems like they want to get to know the school that's up against them. After all, our school beat every other school, that's why we're going up against a higher institution."

"And do you know that their team leader, Logan, is really good?"

At the mention of Logan, Naomi almost choked. She quickly gulped down her glass of water. This action of here attracted the attention of many.

"Are you okay?" They asked.

"Did you just say Logan?" She asked not minding the question they asked her. They all looked at each other surprised.

"Well, yes, why?" Jerome answered.

"Where is Southstream located?" She inquired.

"I think it's in Australia." Paul answered and Naomi's eyes widened. Her worst fears were coming to pass. "Is anything the matter?" He asked and she shook her head revealing a smile.

"I'm okay. I was just curious." She said and they sighed relieved that she was okay. 'Enemies are really bound to cross each other's paths.' She looked down at her food, no longer having the appetite to eat. She dumped it somewhere and went to her room.

All through that night, Naomi kept thinking. Why did the universe have to be so cruel to her and send Logan towards her? Logan of all people! Didn't he already hurt her enough? What was all this?

She felt like crying and wanted the whole earth to swallow her whole but that was clearly impossible.

"What did I do to deserve this?" She asked and rested her head on her table.

Pete looked up at Naomi's window, the lights were still on and then they went off. He shook his head and proceeded with his dealings.

Naomi made sure not to go to her window the next morning. She went straight to Travis's room. She needed to talk to someone just to keep her mind busy.

On their way to class, Travis bumped into someone and his books fell.

"I'm sorry!" The boy apologized and quickly picked his books but something fell off. Travis wasn't looking but Naomi was. She seemed to have seen a sanitary pad fall out of the book. She thought she saw wrong but it was it.

'Would a boy need a pad?' Naomi thought, confused as she watched the boy scurry away after picking up his books and the pad.

"What's wrong, Naomi?" Travis asked her looking confused.

"Um nothing. Who's that boy?" She inquired.

"He's Mason, why?"

"Just curious." She said while smiling.

'Does Naomi like Mason?' Travis thought as they commenced walking. 'I can't let Naomi like another boy.' He thought to himself.

They got to class and Naomi marveled at it. For the first time since she came to the school, she could safely say that the class was clean. Very clean.

She cleaned her eyes to make sure she wasn't seeing things.

"It's so clean!" She exclaimed really surprised.

"Yeah, since you fell sick the other day, they decided to keep the class really clean." Travis said.

"But how did you know that...?"

"Good morning, Naomi." Derek greeted and she turned to him.

"Morning, monitor. It seems you've been busy these past few days." She said.

"It's nothing I can't handle!" He raised his shoulders with an air of pride and confidence. "By the way, are you still on your period?" He asked which shocked her.

"What?" She exclaimed with wide eyes and grew embarrassed. "Who told you that?"

It was embarrassing to hear him ask that out loud. Travis saw her flushed expression and thought of changing the topic.

"It's nothing. I… "

"By the way, monitor," Travis interrupted him before he said any more embarrassing things. "...when can we hand in our assessment booklets?" Travis asked putting his hands on Naomi's shoulders.

"Well right now. If yours is ready, place it on my desk." He said and Travis nodded with a smile, leading Naomi away.

Naomi sat down still feeling embarrassed. Everyone's eyes were on her and then it dawned on her that everyone knew about her condition.

"Could this day get any worse?" She asked and just then the math teacher entered.

"Pop quiz!" He announced.

"My life is over!" Naomi groaned as she felt her soul leaving her body. She hated math. 'This won't do. The day has to go in my favor at least once.' Her eyes sparkled.

She looked over at Travis and winked.

"Follow my lead." She whispered and he nodded.

Naomi suddenly fainted on the floor and Travis panicked.

"Teacher, Naomi suddenly fainted! I think she has a fever" Travis yelled in alarm.

"You all wait here, I'll get the doctor!" The teacher said and left the class. As soon as he did, Naomi opened one of her eyes to peek.
