Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Unseen Watchers

As Julian's fist, glowing with a menacing aura, remained suspended in the air, Alex experienced a moment of introspection. Surprisingly, he found himself enveloped in a sense of calm, an unexpected reaction given the volatility of the situation. His heart rate was steady, his mind clear – a stark contrast to what one would typically feel in the face of an imminent physical confrontation.

Alex couldn't help but ponder this unusual tranquility. Ever since he had awakened in this mystical world, following his departure from a life filled with familial turmoil, he had felt an overarching sense of composure. Even in situations that would normally elicit stress or anxiety, he remained unusually serene.

The only exception to this calmness was the brief surge of anger he had experienced earlier, fueled by the echoes of his past life and the injustices he had faced. Yet, apart from that singular instance, his emotional landscape since arriving in this world had been remarkably even-keeled.

As Julian's threatening posture maintained its stillness, Lucian's voice broke through Alex's contemplations. "Julian, this is not the way. You're in a public place. Think of the family's reputation."

Julian's expression flickered momentarily, a sign that Lucian's words had reached some part of his conscience. The energy around his fist dimmed slightly, though his grip on Alex's shirt remained firm.

Alex, meanwhile, took the opportunity to carefully assess Julian. The young Valtor heir exuded confidence and power, but there was something in his demeanor that suggested a deeper, perhaps more turbulent, inner world. It was a complexity Alex had begun to recognize in many of the people he had encountered in this new realm.

His thoughts were abruptly interrupted as Julian finally released his grip, pushing Alex away with a force that sent him stumbling back a step. "Consider yourself lucky this time," Julian spat out. "But watch your back in Valoria. Not everyone is as forgiving as I am."

With a final glare, Julian turned and strode out of the tavern, leaving behind a trail of murmurs and unsettled glances from the other patrons.

Lucian approached Alex, a look of concern on his face. "Are you alright? Julian can be… unpredictable."

Alex straightened up, nodding. "I'm fine. It was just unexpected. I'm still trying to understand how things work here in Valoria."

The incident in the tavern had given Alex much to think about. His own reactions, the dynamics of power in Valoria, and the complexities of the relationships he was forming – all were pieces of a puzzle he was slowly putting together.

As they left the tavern and walked into the cool night, Alex knew that his journey in this world was going to be filled with challenges and revelations.

Stepping out into the cool night air, Lucian turned to Alex with an apologetic expression. "I'm sorry for the incident back there. It wasn't what I had in mind for our evening. I'd like to make it up to you. How about we meet here tomorrow, and I'll accompany you wherever you need to go?"

Alex, appreciative of the gesture, replied, "Thank you, Lucian. Actually, I was planning to visit the Hunters' Hall tomorrow. It would be helpful to have you with me."

Lucian's face lit up with a slight smile. "The Hunters' Hall, perfect! I know it well. Let's meet here then, and I'll join you."

They exchanged goodbyes, with Lucian disappearing into the winding streets of Valoria. Alex, meanwhile, needed only to cross the street to find a place to stay. An inn, invitingly lit and bustling with the quiet activity of night, caught his eye.

Entering the inn, Alex was greeted by a short lady at the front desk, her features charmingly accented by a pair of soft bunny ears that twitched as she spoke. The diverse nature of Valoria's inhabitants never ceased to amaze him.

"Good evening," she said with a warm smile. "How may I assist you tonight?"

"I'd like a room for one night, please," Alex responded, handing her a few gold coins from the pouch Lucian had given him.

"Of course, right this way." She handed him a key with a room number engraved on it. "Your room is on the first floor, just down the hall. Let us know if you need anything else."

Alex thanked her and made his way to his room, finding it to be modest but comfortable. A small bed, a wooden table, and a window with a view of the street below provided a welcoming atmosphere.

In the solitude of his room, Alex opened his system interface to strategically allocate his remaining points, which totaled to 4. He distributed them evenly among strength, agility, and endurance, enhancing his physical capabilities to better prepare for the challenges of Valoria.

Upon completing the allocation, his system displayed the updated stats:

• Strength: 12 (initial value of 10 + 2)

• Agility: 10 (initial value of 9 + 1)

• Endurance: 9 (initial value of 8 + 1)

• Intelligence: 5

• Wisdom: 5

• Charisma: 5

• Remaining Points: 0

The update provided Alex with a sense of increased confidence in his abilities. However, this moment of progress was quickly overshadowed by the system's unexpected warning of being watched.

After cautiously spotting the shadowy figures on the rooftop, a new quest alert appeared on his system interface, introducing an element of intrigue and potential danger.

New Quest: Unseen Watchers

• Objective: Investigate the identity and intent of the individuals observing you.

• Reward: +10 Attribute Points, Mystery Box (Bronze).

The quest not only acknowledged the immediate threat but also offered significant rewards. The additional attribute points would be a valuable asset in enhancing his capabilities further. More intriguing, however, was the mention of a 'Mystery Box (Bronze).' The nature of its contents was unknown, adding a layer of mystery and anticipation to the quest.

Lying in the modest bed of the inn, Alex's mind was a hive of activity. He meticulously crafted a detailed plan to confront the mysterious watchers, knowing he would only receive the quest rewards upon its successful completion.

1. Initial Reconnaissance:

• In the early hours, when the streets were still bathed in darkness, Alex planned to step out under the guise of a night stroll. His first move was to confirm the watchers' presence without arousing suspicion.

2. Feigning Unawareness:

• Alex would walk casually, showing no signs of alertness to make the watchers believe he was oblivious to their surveillance. His route would be random, avoiding any pattern that might hint at his awareness.

3. Gradual Isolation:

• Slowly, Alex would venture towards quieter parts of Valoria. He aimed to move away from crowded areas to a more secluded location, enticing the watchers to follow him into a less public setting.

4. Choosing the Right Spot:

• The destination was a key element of his plan. Alex had noted a secluded alley during his earlier exploration of the town – it was narrow, with high walls and minimal exits, ideal for cornering the watchers.

5. Sudden Change in Behavior:

• Upon reaching the alley, Alex would abruptly alter his behavior. From a casual stroll, he would shift to a brisk walk, then to a sudden stop, as if realizing he was being followed. This was intended to catch the watchers off guard.

6. Preparing for Confrontation:

• In the alley, Alex would position himself near an exit, ready to escape if necessary. He would confront the watchers, demanding to know their intent. If the situation escalated to a physical confrontation, Alex was prepared to use his recently enhanced attributes.

7. Utilizing the Environment:

• The alley's narrow confines would limit the watchers' movement, giving Alex a tactical advantage. He planned to use the walls for cover and potentially as a means to launch surprise maneuvers.

8. Escape Plan:

• If the situation became untenable, Alex's escape route was through the alley's exit, leading to a busier street where the watchers would be less inclined to pursue aggressively.

Throughout his planning, Alex remained acutely aware of the risks involved. He knew that confronting the watchers could lead to unforeseen consequences. Yet, the need to understand who was observing him and why was paramount.

As he eventually drifted to sleep, his mind ran through the plan repeatedly, refining each step. Tomorrow's actions would be a significant test of his wit, strength, and adaptability in this new and enigmatic world.
