Chapter 1 - Fairyland’s First Dungeon Break

I looked up to the starry night sky from where I sat and asked it just one question.

'Am I really not one of them?'

I wasn't in need of an answer, it was rhetorical. I knew the answer but it was hard to believe. At the age of 16, all fairies will be able to obtain their wings. I however, have never obtained mine. I found out why when my sister a year later obtained hers and I questioned them. They told me that I was an anomaly or a late bloomer but I knew the truth. They didn't have to say it to me, I could tell that they were hiding something from me but I hoped it wasn't the case, that, liked they said, I was a late bloomer.

"Brother!" Emmi called out and slammed into my side. Her wings fluttered around her effortlessly before they wrapped themselves around us.

I placed a hand on her head whilst she nestled herself into me.

"Emmi," I started, staring out into the distance. The landscape was vast, we sat on top of a cliff's edge looking down on the valley below. We could see our village hidden in the trees, lights lighting the whole forest up.

Emmi looked up at me with a quizzical expression.

"Do you think I belong?" I asked, fearing the answer. Her answer.

Emmi tilted her head and looked directly into my eyes.

Her eyes, an amber orange colour, mismatched with her silvery white hair glimmered in the moonlight. Her lips puckered as her stare into mine intensified.

For a long minute she didn't say anything, her eyes never wavered.

"Those wings will come out, I know they will," Emmi finally answered.

"How can you be sure? All fairies my age and your age had already gotten theirs..."

"I just know and they will be handsome and match well with mine."

My gaze dropped to her wings which were wrapped snuggly around us. They were the most colourful and beautiful set of wings I've ever seen, probaly the most beautiful within our whole village.

I lifted my right hand and gently placed it on her right wing. As I did, Emmi shuddered, a moan escaped her lips as she closed her eyes.

I gently moved my hand down her delicate wing. It felt amazing and remarkably thin. A warm heat emitted from her wings and it felt great underneath my touch.

Her whole body was withering against mine as her breath became more heavier.

"Leon, if the world is unforgiving or cruel to you, whether you have wings or without. Even if our whole race turns against you. Know this. Emmi will always love you no matter what."

Oh? This is the first time I've ever heard her call my name before.

"Remember when we were kids and we played in the valley below where the big waterfall is, there were beautiful flowers and a big pond at the base of the waterfall. We were playing in the pond and something happened. You fell into the deepest part of the pond and the pond swallowed you up. I didn't know what to do but my heart nearly stopped as I watched the darkness slowly faded away. I instinctively opened my mouth, took in a big gulp of air and swam down. Like this."

Emmi did what she had said in the story she was recounting and took in a big gulp of air. She then moved her face an inch away from mine and closed her eyes.

At that moment our lips locked and the air that was in her mouth entered mine. The air was pure and warm as it flowed into my body until she broke off a second later to inhale a new lung full of air.

This time however, she exhaled and tried to return her breathing back to normal before she pressed her lips back to mine and gave me an actual kiss.

We stayed like this for a couple of minutes before our lips parted. A blush dusted her cheeks before the shade of pick turned bright red. Her eyes locked on to me with a smile on her face.

"I love you. When I watched you regained your breath. It felt like mine had retuned as well."

Tears fell from her eyes but her smile never left even though her lips trembled.

"I only remembered fragments of that but the expression you showed me when I opened my eyes, the one you're showing me now is the exact same. Emmi, I love you too." I said as I wiped the tears from her cheeks as she sniffed.

Her eyes lit up at the last part of my words. It was like that was the only thing she heard.

"You do realise that by us confessing to each other, we acknowledge that I'm not your brother and that I might be adopted."

Emmi nodded.

"But," I continued with a serious expression. "We can't be together until we know for sure and that means we can't let our parents know about our relationship."

Emmi's smile dropped and shook her head.

Her hair fluttered against the wind and fireflies appeared out of nowhere. This wasn't a coincidence, there usually no wind up here and yet there was and I haven't seen a single firefly up here before and now there's a bunch.

It's Emmi's doing. Fairies has the power of nature, they learned it at a very young age which added another reason why I didn't think I am a fairy. I couldn't learn nature magic at all when I was young to the dismay of my parents. They tried everything and for years too but nothing appeared. Not even to cut a leaf from a tree branch. It frustrated me to no end as I too tried very hard and trained everyday in hopes that it will come.

The strange thing was that I could feel something within, a strange powerful force but nothing manifested. I felt less like a man that could protect the one person that gave me her heart.

Suddenly the wind changed and as I looked at Emmi's face, she showed confusion. It wasn't her magic. Her eyes wandered to the forest behind us. Where there shouldn't have been wind up here without Emmi's magic, now there are an abundance of it and it blowed backwards into the dark forest behind us.

Our village is in the forest in the valley and I know for a fact there's no other fairies villages up here.

As the wind picked up, blue sparks appeared out of no where and then suddenly a bright blue circle formed. The blue circle turned white as blue sparks circled the outer perimeter of the circle.

Figures started to emerge from the white circle. Four of them to be exact. Three male and one female, all adorned some strange armour.

The fairy races have their own armour types all of which are made from impenetrable wood sheets made from the world tree that resides in their individual sacred grounds.

Our villagers are equiped with these armour wooden plating and is also equipped with a spear and a bow and arrow as weapons of choice. Emmi's father, my father until proven wrong, is an elite warrior who owns a much more intricate set embroiled with our village's crest. Emmi received her's when she had her wings, I was supposed to get mine, when I was to have my wings but since I didn't, no fancy armour for me.

Emmi wasn't wearing hers, it was back at home which made my heart skipped a beat. I can't use magic but Emmi can, but she doesn't have her armour on. I also know that she wouldn't want to wear it even if she has too because whilst she enjoys magic, she's not a fighter. She hates anyone getting hurt and wouldn't want to inflict pain upon others.

A side of her I liked and admire. I loved all of her but whoever I see this side, I'm reminded that she is the light in the darkest times.

The four armoured figures held different kind of weapons in their hands. One wielded an axe, another had a big sword strapped in place to his back, the third had a pair of small looking swords, one in each hand and the last, the female had a long wooden stick with weird looking ornaments on it.

The male in the middle that looked middle aged, short blonde hair, piercing blue eyes and a beard covering almost his entire lower half of his face, unstrapped his blade from his back and set the big blade into the ground before him.

"Hello creatures of this world, we the axon team are ready! Show me what you've got!"

The female on the far right side sighed into her wooden stick and banging it against her forehead.

"Your embarrassing us, Harold…" the female said rolling her eyes.

"Don't worry creatures, his not with us," the one in between Harold and the female said shaking his head.

"Ya!" Said the last male on the left side in a deep gruntled voice. He was the shortest in the group, almost halved in size than everyone else in the group and a beard that covered almost his entire face.

The one called Harold spoke again not paying too much attention to what his compaions had remarked.

"If you don't want to get hurt, take me to your boss."

I shook my head in response and he frowned.

"No?"

I tilted my head to the side but then shook again.

Anger now visible in his eyes and only his eyes as the lower half became stoic.

He eyed the both of us before his gaze landed onto Emmi and stayed there which sent a shiver down my spine and rage bubbling within me. A smile appeared on his face.

"On second thought, kill the guy and take the girl. Look at those pretty wings, may fetch us a pretty penny."

A strong gust of wind picked up and rammed into the four figures. I looked to Emmi, her eyes glowed bright orange and as the wind grew stronger, the brightness in her eyes intensified.

Her wings opened wide and the colourful patterns started to glow. She's pushing herself hard. She has no idea what to do, I needed to think of something and fast because I could see the colour fading from Emmi as she poured more power into her attack but it was no use, one of the figure had erected a forcefield of some sort blocking her wind burst.

Panic started to appear in Emmi's eyes as the wind just bounced off this forcefield.

Emmi suddenly stopped her attack, the wind dissipated as her eyes closed and she fell on top of me, unmoving.

My heart slowed as I frantically called out to her. Each beat thumped loudly in my chest. Each beat sent a sharp pang that cause the vision in my eyes to blur. At that moment, my world fell apart as the four figures moved towards us, the male with the big sword walked confidently, an amused grin plastered on his face.
