The room was filled with the aroma of simmering stew and the crackling of the fire when a loud bang echoed through the room.
Cain had just set down a massive slab of meat on the table, its raw scent mingling with the warm, inviting smell of the stew. The noise snapped Cara out of her thoughts, and she spun around, her gaze locking onto the door as she greeted their return.
"Oh, Cain, Hans, you've arrived. Welcome home!" Her voice was merry, a stark contrast to the dispirited coos she'd been giving them over the past few days.
Cain found her sudden change in mood unusual, but he didn't probe. "Yes, it's good to be home," he replied, his voice filled with warmth. He moved towards Cara, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. Hans, the burly wolf with sharp eyes, followed suit, wrapping his arms around her from behind, a content sigh escaping his lips.
