Chapter 5 - Chapter 3

I woke up in David's guest room. It was still dark, but I could see a flicker of sunlight peeking out from the horizon. As I sat up, wiping the sleep out of my eyes, I remembered the gruesome scene from just hours before. I wondered how I was able to sleep as walked to the bathroom. In the bathroom, there was a bath made for me. It had rose petals soaking the slightly hot water. The smell was calming and serene. I saw there was a wine glass and a bottle of wine sitting on a table next to the tub. I smiled, knowing that David must have prepared this. I left my room and went to David's; I wanted to thank him for the kind gesture.

David's door was slightly open, only enough to see some light and a few slivers of furniture. As I reached for the doorknob, I heard a sudden outburst of cries and screams. It was David. He was crying, his eyes red and puffy. He had a bottle of alcohol on the sitting table and a glass next to it filled just below halfway. I could tell he was drunk, but he wasn't drunk enough to be incoherent.

"David, what happened?"

"I-"

He couldn't finish without bursting into tears again. I knew there was nothing I could say, so I gave him a gentle hug. We slowly descended to the floor and he rested his head on my lap. I rubbed my thumb on his cheek ever so gently. When he calmed down, I decided to test the waters and see if he was ready to talk.

"What's wrong? What happened, why are you like this?"

"I couldn't sleep. All I could think about...the bodies. What if he comes for you? I'm scared, I'm scared that if he comes for us, I won't be able to protect you."

"David, I can protect myself, and even if something were to happen, we'd be together. I will always stay with you, we'll fight, and we'll die, together."

With that, David looked into my eyes. He was only inches away from my face. I felt his husky breath brush against my cheeks. He came closer and I felt his lips press into mine. I was shocked, I didn't know what to do; I couldn't think. All my thoughts melded into one and melted like hot metal in a burning furnace. Losing control over my actions, I felt myself kiss him back. His lips were soft and his breath smelled a little of sweet wine. The kiss felt good, so good that I didn't realize when it was over.

David grazed his thumb over my cheek, caressing it as he looked into my eyes. He kissed my forehead before pulling me into a tight, but gentle hug.

"I won't let anything happen to you, I put my life on it."
