Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Guard

Kin was motionless on the ground, he was the figure that fell. unlike me, he did not fall to his feets nor did he fall on his back, he fell on his sides, If he had fallen back first his small bag would have insulated his fall.

"I hope you are not dead" I raced towards him forgetting my ankle was sprained. I checked to see if his heart was beating, fortunately, it was, I checked if he was breathing also, and he was. His eyes were shut, and he was knocked out cold, I turned him to his back and I saw a little cut on his head,

"What I do?" I asked panicking and disoriented. Thank goodness it wasn't at night or in the evening this happened. I praised the owner of the universe. I looked at the tree and where he fell from, it wasn't high nor low, it was just in the middle of the tree.

"Wake up you idiot," I said while I slapped Kin in the face, "wake up" I shouted.

There wasn't an answer from him. My breathing was intense, I was vexed.

"Why would you fall?" I asked the unconscious fellow who slept peacefully on the ground. I have to do something ASAP, I thought to myself. I deliberated on whether I should give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Hell no. He didn't drown he fell from a tree.

"What if they come" I asked myself worried about what I saw the night before, " pull yourself together Dane, stop being such a baby! Pull yourself together!! You got this".

I made a decision, I decided to wait and camp a while till he gained consciousness. I went towards where the sticks were and I grabbed one of them it had a good side and length. I used it as a walking stick, it was perfect, it made me walk faster and it made things easier.

It was noon a good and bright one. Even I could see the brightest need through the place I was, enclosed by trees. No one from the camp came looking for us, and my friend Kin showed no signs of waking up. I made a fire and cooked the bird that I killed, I had eaten my share and left the remaining for my friend. Our water supply was low, I couldn't find my water bottle so I drank Kin's water. Sleep came in waves clouding my eyes. I waved the sleep away watching over my friend. I had prepared myself in case we were attacked or swarmed by a few zombies, the knife Kin had was kept safely with me as my walking stick. My ankle had gotten better, but my wrist was the same, still paining me when I rested on it and when I used it forcefully. Thank goodness, my nose was free from pain. I used part of Kin's water to clean the dried-up blood in my nose. All I waited for was for my friend to awaken from his unconscious state.

"Wake up bro, I don't want us to stay out in the open tonight. We don't know how many of them are out there. I know you might be wondering why I came back for you, as you said earlier, you did not want to lose anyone not even your rival, I came because I did not want to lose a dear friend, this is the first time you've fainted, I guess. When you fell... for a moment I thought you died and now I fear that you are mortally wounded, am holding back tears Kin, I don't want to seem weak 'cause I know I'm not. You have a very good heart although you act like a freakin' psycho sometimes. Please wake up." I said with a feeling of sadness. All the words I said didn't wake him up. I feared he might be in a coma. But it wasn't that high. why is he still lying on the ground? Why isn't he even moving?

A strange but a good idea pooped into my head. It was a brilliant one, and I wished it worked.

"Don't fail me, " I said to the water bottle I was holding, I opened it and turned its head towards Kins. The first drops of water fell on my friend's face, it made him uncomfortable. He shook his head as if he was disapproving of the idea of me pouring water on him. He raised his left arm shaking it. His eyes pooped wide open.

"Hey dummy, you fell," I said hiding my real emotions. Kin did not reply immediately, he held his head, he squinted his eyes and he yawned, My friend was confused.

"I did?" He said still confused, "Dane don't tell me, you waited for me to wake up" he looked displeased.

"I had to" I simply said.

"Oh shoot, you should have fled and gone to camp and find safety," Kin said, standing to his feet, I was surprised he didn't sustain many injuries. He only injured his head.

"I had to stay and protect you, bro," I said, wondering why he made a sudden outburst.

"You know what we saw last night." Kin's eyes were impatient.

"What" I asked trying to understand what he saying.

"I don't have time for this Dane. The hordes we saw last night!"

"Yes?"

"I think they saw us"

"How? And why aren't they here by now? , why aren't we swarmed?" I said feeling discomfort.

"I don't know! When I was on the tree, I saw a wolf, it wasn't a normal wolf. I didn't want it to spot me that was why I fell, I deliberately fell." Kin said. " We need to go now, but not to camp."

"Why? That's our safest bet" I said perplexed as to why Kin was saying all that he said, maybe the impact on his head restarted his brain.

"We are being followed," Kin said.

"Followed by whom?" I asked, puzzled.

"The zombies. I don't know but I think there might be a hybrid zombie..."
