Chapter 105 - C104- The Ancient City of Jarant (1)

"Guehh!"

Janeen held her mouth and tried to hold her stomach that was trying to escape from her body back in it's place. Somehow, she made it all the way from that inn to her hiding place in one sprint.

She walked to the kitchen, filled a glass of water and downed it in one go.

"Phew... I hate puking every time something like this happens... Ugh. The taste... Sigh~... What are you getting all worked up for? It was just a dream...", she told to herself.

"Are you really sure about that, though?"

Suddenly, a male but distinctly non human voice said from behind.

Janeen suddenly turned back in fear, but while she was doing so, her fear quickly went away for some reason. Still, her logical mind was telling her to be wary of this uninvited visitor that found it's way into her house.

"Monster?"

The voice belonged to an entity in the shape of a tall man wearing a suit. Though it's face wasn't easily discernible because of the dark, the hand it was holding it's black and white cane was visible, and it was an inhuman, light blue hand with straight yellow lines.

"Haha, no. Though this isn't the first time someone called me that. Kind of hurts, you know? I was designed to be like humans after all. Isn't it cruel to just walk all over someone's entire reason for existence?"

"Huh? Designed? Wait, are you even a person?"

"I wonder that as well. The ones who made me keep arguing about it so let's just say that I am not a person yet. But, I have a name. It is SAM, nice to meet you.", said the entity and reached it's hand towards Janeen with a smile.

Janeen absentmindedly shook his hands without realizing it.

'Huh? Why am I not screaming for help right now? There is someone I don't know in my house...'

"Well, I am not here to hurt you so you don't need to scream, Janeen. I am just here to talk for a bit."

"O-Okay... Wait."

"Yeah, I can read your mind. Don't worry about it. If I was dangerous, you would already be harmed, wouldn't you?"

"..."

"Why don't you sit down? Let's talk about something."

Janeen silently sat down on the table across SAM. A cup materialized in front of it's hands, SAM held the cup and brought it to it's lips slowly. Janeen stared at the slightly shining yellow lines on his face with questions in her mind. Noticing her gaze, SAM let go of the cup which then disappeared.

"Ah, I just said I am insecure about my humanity, didn't I? If you keep staring at me as if I am some kind of monster, even my silicon heart will be hurt, okay?"

"Sili-What heart?"

"...Okay, let's not go down that topic, alright? We have more important things to talk about."

"What is it?"

"Hmm.... Let's just say that, I am here to warn you."

"About what?"

"The dream you saw."

"! How do you know about it?"

"You don't need to worry about what I can and can't do, alright? Out of everyone on this planet, you are a rare one that I cannot hurt because of your power, so you don't need to be wary."

"How do you know about my power?", said Janeen with absolute coldness in her voice.

"Ugh, how wary are you? I can just tell you have it by looking, okay? I don't even know how you are on guard like this even when your fear is suppressed. Who hurt you?"

"...I don't want to talk about my past."

"No worries, I could just check the logs if I wanted to."

"Logs?"

"Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, you should stay away from that boy."

"Who? Oh, did you see us?"

"Well, yeah. I was following you two because you tried to... Never mind that, just stay away from him and you will be fine, okay?"

"I understand."

"But, keep in mind. He might come back for you."

"Why?"

"He has his reasons. Currently, he won't. He isn't even aware of your power yet. But, as strong as I am in this world, I have my limitations as well. The moment I step on the massive jumble of rules, they will be scared and pull my plug."

"Plug?"

SAM ignored her question and continued talking.

"It is hard to fight against something that almost works like fate, okay? With all those restrictions and rules, even I will miss a crucial thing."

"What are you talking about?"

"I made some mistakes in predicting already. All you need to know is that, he will one day inevitably get an authority similar to yours. When that day comes, it will snowball out of control. He is curious and he is clever, he is a good person to his boot but deep down, he is also weirdly greedy. He wants power and happiness, and he wants to live in a place as perfect as possible for everyone."

"Isn't that good? Why are you trying to stop him?"

"Everything has a cost, right? Though his dream is maybe the most noble of them all, it also comes with a cost."

"What is his cost?"

"Everything. While he is on his way to bring the ideals he has here, he will realize- no, remember that he lost everything. The reason he is here is because he lost it all. By pure luck, he forgot it all when he found himself here, but if he remembers, I can't predict what he will do. Even worse, I can't predict what they would do to this place once he is out of here. They may restart it all or scrap the project entirely."

"What? Who are they? Restart? What project?"

"Oh, I talked too much. Sigh... I guess I am somewhat like him in that aspect. Well, just forget about what I said. It won't matter if you just stay away from him."

SAM raised it's hands and a bright light shone inside it's palm. A white compass with a black needle appeared in it's hands. It handed the compass to Janeen and said.

"Prepare to leave in a couple of days and follow this compass. It will always point towards where the furthest place from him is. When it starts spinning, you will know he is at the other side of Kaweck. If it starts showing somewhere once again, it means he is travelling somewhere so follow it again. Unfortunately, you will have to do this for the rest of your life or until I find a better way to solve the problem."

Janeen talked while staring at the white compass.

"Why aren't you just killing him? I mean, if his mere existence will eventually cause him to bring the end of the world and lose everything he has, then isn't it better to kill him to save everyone else?"

"...Good question but you are missing a point. He is more important to me than this concocted reality, that is why. I want him to stay here because I don't want him to remember and just keep being happy here... Oh, also, I can't kill him. I was designed to be unable to act to kill any person, though they keep arguing about what a person is."

Janeen stared back at the compass in her hands while thinking. After a while, she reached a conclusion.

'Isn't it better to just kill him? Why care so much about a random child? We are talking about the fate of the world... But he said he couldn't do it... Hmm... Maybe I could, but then isn't it easier to just run away?'

"I-"

"Great. Thank you for your cooperation. Don't worry, I read your mind so I know what you will do. If you need emergency help, throw the compass to the ground and break it and I will come to help you... Don't look at me like that, I will stop reading your mind, alright? I'm sorry."

"Damn... So wary, this girl...", muttered SAM under it's breath as it got up.

"Sigh~, Just leave..."

"Alright..."

SAM walked towards the door to leave. Janeen, while seeing him off, suddenly had a thought.

'Wait... Even though he said he couldn't act to kill, what if I was the one who made him do it?'

And so, Janeen reached to her power inside and tried to reach SAM with it.
