Chapter 1 - Back At Hogwarts

James Potter joined the Holy Harpies after he took OWLS and moved from the Godric Hollow and mostly was on tour and Sirius Black accompanied him as his personal manager. Mostly, because he wanted to finish school with his friend and he had no place to live since the Blacks had thrown him out and it was weird to stay at the Potters when James wasn't around. And,he returned to England after almost a year.

After a year, not much had changed at Hogwarts, only James Potter returned with an American girlfriend who was, coincidentally, the new exchange student.

"Hello, Professor." James smiled, "It's great to be back here."

He stepped out of the fireplace.

"And, it is great to see you." McGonagall smiled.

"And, you too. Mr. Black." As Sirius Black followed his friend out of the fireplace.

"Thank you, Professor."

"I understand you both will be taking the NEWTS this year." She continued, "And, want to graduate with your class this year."

They both nodded.

"You know what it means." McGonagall continued. "Both of you have to work twice as hard as the others! Understood?"

"Yes." James nodded. "I hope you won't be too hard on us."

He said, worriedly. He needed to get this done in a year if he wanted to get back to playing for the Holy Harpies.

"And, Potter?"

Both of them started to walk out when McGonagall called out.

"I had to mail this…but you were out of town and it got returned from your office last week." She said,

"What, Professor?" He asked.

She handed him a badge. It was a Quidditch Captain badge.

"Really?" James picked it up.

Anyone would have thought if they played for the national team would be made school Captain instantly, but James's mind never went there.

"Oh, thank you, thank you." He jumped up and down like a child. "Thank you, Professor."

She smiled.

"Way to go, Prongsie!" Sirius patted him at the back.

"Let's go show this to Remus." James said, excitedly.

They both rushed into the Gryffindor common room and saw Caroline, James's new girlfriend sitting in a corner, looking left out and bored.

"James!" She lit up when she saw James and Sirius walk in.

The Gryffindor common room cheered loudly as he came inside. A Holy Harpies' player on a year's sabbatical to finish school was a big deal. For everyone.

Caroline squeezed herself through the crowd and came near him. James hugged her.

"How are you liking the school so far?" He asked.

"It's okay." She said, "But, I don't know anyone here….And, everyone knows everyone."

"I can fix that." James said. "Hey. Alice, Mary, this is the new exchange student. Caroline Trent."

Mary and Alice introduced themselves to Caroline.

"So, it's your bed set up in our dormitory." Marlene joined in.

"Whose bed?" Lily came by.

"Oh, hey, Evans." James smiled pleasantly. "Caroline, meet our new head girl, Lily Evans. And, Evans, meet Caroline Trent, the American exchange student and…..my girlfriend."

Alice raised her eyebrows and looked at Lily who was a little surprised.

James Potter had finally backed off. Considering how she had humiliated him when he last asked her out. James would never admit it, but Lily was one of reasons he left school and joined the Holy Harpies. He needed time away from her. He needed to look for someone else. He wanted...….he just wanted the girl he loved to love him back. He had everything in his life but the girl he loved. And, that's when Caroline came into his life and he fell….he fell in love. Maybe, Remus was right, he just needed to get away from Lily and have a fresh start and fresh start did he have.

Among thousands of girls fawning over him, it was Caroline's face he saw. It was Caroline whom he wanted. Slowly, bit by bit….he forgot her and fell deeply in love with Caroline.

"Hey, Caroline." James walked away, so she could get to know her roommates. "See you at dinner, okay? I am gonna see if Remus is here."

"Okay." She nodded.

James and Sirius went to unpack and after almost an hour after talking to Remus and making fun of Peter they all went down to the Great Hall for supper. A deafening applause greeted James Potter to which he smiled politely as his eyes looked for Caroline.

"Hey, Caroline?" He asked.

He took a seat next to her,

"How about after dinner I show you around the grounds?"

"Yeah.." She smiled, kissing his cheek. "I have been looking forward to it."

James Potter talked pleasantly with everyone who came to talk to him from seventh years to the first timid ones looking for James to sign their robes. Lily couldn't believe it, had becoming a world famous athlete actually humble the arrogant James Potter? Or was she thinking that because he was famous? Oh, how she didn't want to be that girl! The girl who ignored him before and now that he was famous she suddenly liked him. But, the heart wants what it wants. She shook her head softly and focused on her treacle tart.

It wouldn't have bothered Lily that James had a girlfriend if she wasn't in the dormitory as her own friends. True, she had her own room now that she was a head girl but it didn't matter because James had one just opposite to hers and Caroline was either in their shared living room or the dorm room where her friends stayed. She had to share everything with Caroline, her dorm room, her friends and even the guy who was blindly in love with her only a year ago. Only, he was now Caroline's boyfriend. She got to see all the things that would have been hers had she been in Caroline's place.

It was a day after a long and stressful night (a full moon) for the Marauders when James and Caroline had their first fight. He came inside the Gryffindor common room along with his friends hours after dawn. It didn't matter because this weekend, it was Hogsmeade weekend (scheduled around Remus's fortnightly changes.) so, they could sleep till late. James came inside the common room with the other Marauders when many pstudents were getting ready to go to Hogsmeade.

"James…." Caroline stood near the door.

James almost jumped out of his skin.

"Jesus, Care." He said, "You scared me."

"You were out all night?" She asked, angrily.

"Yeah….kind of." James scratched his face.

"What were you doing?" She asked. "I went by your room last night and no one was there."

"Yeah…I was out with these guys." He pointed to the Marauders coming behind him.

"Guys?" There was no one. They all had snuck out as soon as they saw Caroline at the door.
