DOMINICK
I entered the Mitchell Building around 9:00 am. I prefer going to the office during weekends when I'd be alone with no disturbances. I sat down to review the cases I have and those I've delegated to the other lawyers Tristan and I employed. It's not that I don't trust them, I just want to make sure everything's going smoothly so there's no room for any surprises.
Three hours in, my concentration was cut short by the shrill ringtone of my phone, indicating I had a call. I picked up my phone curious to see who was calling me because I rarely get any calls. Unsurprisingly, it was DJ calling me, I pressed the green button to answer the call
'Hey, man, you missing me already? We just parted ways at midnight' I joked
'Yeah, right.' He chuckled. 'Listen, I need to ask a favor from you'
'Really, what is it?' I sat up straighter at his serious tone. He rarely asks for anything.
'Don't worry, it's nothing serious. My little sister, Phoebe is studying pre-law at New York University, she needs a law firm to intern at.'
'Okay', I said feeling relieved. 'But, I can't just accept her without reviewing her grades and interviewing her. You know that internships at my firm is very competitive. Let her apply and I'll review her just like the other applicants, you know how much I hate nepotism.'
'I know, thanks bro, this is more than I could have wished for. I'll get back to you, thank you!'
'Okay, bye. Catch you later.' We ended the call
I'm pretty sure DJ's little sister is irresponsible and has bad grades. What else can be the reason she's looking for an internship so late? Pampered princess already used to mommy and daddy's money to always save the day, I thought in disgust. But, I'll try to keep an open mind and review her application fairly.
I continued my case reviews till my stomach rumbled in hunger. I've not eaten since the two pieces of toast I ate for breakfast coupled with the gallons of coffee I've been drinking. I stood up, stretched then wore my jacket to go to one of my favorite Italian restaurants opposite the Mitchell Building.
I entered the restaurant, and I was immediately calmed by the ambiance and its beautiful decor. I picked the menu and perused it although I have it memorized, but as I raised my hand to call a waiter, I saw one of the persons I hate the most, my ex fiancèe, Chloe Jeffers.
I dropped my hand immediately, the restaurant that was soothing to me only minutes before was now suffocating and all I could see was red. I made my way to the door, ignoring the waiter trying to catch my attention and left before she could see me because I don't know what I'll do if she acknowledges me, but it won't be good.
Once I was outside, the anger subsided and I was reminded of my hunger. I saw a food truck a few blocks beside the restaurant and I ordered two hot dogs.
I took my hotdogs back to the firm and ate them there. After discarding the papers, my thoughts unwillingly went back to Chloe, my ex fiancèe and I felt sorry for the man she was with, her latest victim.
I started dating Chloe my sophomore year in New York University while studying pre law. I was a geek then and I worshipped the ground she walked on because I wondered what she saw in me. She had proposals from all the top guys and athletes in college and still decided to date me when I was penniless and unpopular.
It was not long when I found out she was only dating me so I can help with her school assignments and projects. I broke up with her then, but she begged me, I fell for it and started dating her again. We did an off and on relationship for six years until she did something I could never forget or forgive.
We were 'on' then and I opened up to her about my insomnia and nightmares. I thank my lucky stars I didn't tell her more than that because almost everyone in the legal scene of New York knew about it before the end of the week. When I confronted hee, she couldn't say anything to defend herself. Disgusted at her attempts to pull the rugs over my eyes once again, I left her and never looked back.
Apart from the personal consequences, she almost destroyed the developing law firm Tristan and I struggled to build from the ground up with no help from others. She also managed to spread false rumors about cases I've solved before. I was only able to bounce back with help from DJ and his father, Joseph Jackson's backing. Clients began to trust me again, business started booming. That's why I'm always so grateful to DJ, he has done a lot for me.
During the four years I broke up with Chloe, I've never been in a serious relationship ever again. My trust had been irreversibly broken. I don't think I can heal from that pain and date someone again.
I'll never let someone get close to me like that ever again.
PHOEBE
After DJ left, I was glued to my phone expecting his call. Fingers crossed his friend's firm has an opening for me. I went to the library after DJ left, but I couldn't concentrate on what I was reading. I called it a day, packed my stuff and went back to the dorm.
Thea! Amanda! I called out as I unlocked the door and entered, but there was no one in the room. I went to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water, and I saw a note taped to the fridge. The note read, 'We went to hang out at Bobby's place. XOXO.'
I wished I was with them, but i'd just be a downer with how worried I am with the internship.
My phone rang and it was DJ, hopefully he has good news
'So, what did he say?' I said as soon as I picked the call
'Hello to you too', I rolled my eyes
'What did he say?'
'He said he will consider you, but he'll be fair. He'll do you no favors because you're my sister. Is that okay by you?'
'Oh! Thank you so much. Of course, I don't expect any special treatments. Thanks for creating an opportunity for me, I love you!' Most people think I expect special treatments whenever I apply for something because of my parents, but I don't. I try as much as possible to achieve things on my own without drawing attention to my last name.
'You should send the required documents to the firm's email. How are your grades, are they good?'
'Of course, they are. Let me go and get the documents ready, bye.'
In the hours that followed, I got my transcripts, extracurricular activities and other necessary stuff and sent it to the email.'
By midnight, I already got a reply informing me I made the first cut and I had an interview on Monday.
'Yay!' I whooped loudly and Thea and Amanda rushed into my room.
'What's wrong?' Thea asked in a sleepy voice
'Oh, guys, I'm so sorry', I replied. I have an interview for the internship at K2 Law Firm on Monday.'
'Really, that's great. I'm so happy for you.' They enthused
We group hugged and they went back to their rooms, they're truly the best roommates ever!
I unlocked my phone and saw the time, the reality of my situation came crashing upon me, it's Sunday already and the interview is on Monday!
I hurriedly got up from the bed, I have so much to do, clothes to pick, books to read. How could I possibly be prepared for an interview that's only a day away?!
I breathed in deeply as I do during yoga and I felt the calm returning to me. I'm one of the best students in my class, I can do this.
I went back to sleep because a well rested mind, makes the best decision. Sunday flew right by me because I have a lot to prepare, I read on some popular cases, got my clothes ready then went to sleep to wake early tomorrow and arrive at the firm early tomorrow morning.
'Beep. Beep. Beep.' The sound of my alarm woke me up, I looked at time and scrambled up, I'm late!
