Chereads / Entangled Hearts: A Tale Of Three / Chapter 12 - Camping Day

Chapter 12 - Camping Day

One week had passed, and at last, the eagerly awaited day for our camping trip had arrived. I rose from my bed, filled with a mix of excitement and readiness. Making my way to the bathroom, I diligently brushed my teeth and indulged in a refreshing bath. Once finished, I carefully selected my clothes and packed my bag, ensuring it contained all the necessary garments and accessories. With my bag in tow, I descended the stairs to join my family for breakfast.

Downstairs, the enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sizzling sound of bacon wafted through the air, enveloping me in their comforting embrace. My father sat on the couch, engrossed in the newspaper, a cup of coffee in his hand.

"Good morning, Dad," I greeted as I made my way towards the kitchen.

Dad: [Responds with a morning greeting but remains focused on the paper.]

In the kitchen, I greeted my mom with a cheerful "Good morning." She looked up from her morning tasks and greeted me warmly. "How are you feeling today, honey?" she inquired.

"I'm feeling well, mom. And how's my little sister doing?" I asked, a smile gracing my face.

"We don't know yet if it's a girl. The doctor said we have to wait two more weeks before we can know the gender," she replied, gently rubbing her belly.

"Well, I hope it's a girl," I said as I sat down on the chair.

"Let's just wait and see," she smiled, serving me breakfast. "Are you excited about the trip?" she asked.

"A little bit, I can manage," I replied as I enjoyed my meal.

"I just want you to be okay and have some fun while you're there. Have you made any friends yet?" she inquired.

"Not really, but there are some people I talk to. I wouldn't say they're my friends, but they're okay," I explained.

"Try to make new friends while you're there, okay? And how's Julie doing? It's been a long time since I've heard from her," she said.

"She's doing well," I responded.

"That's good to hear," she said with a nod. "Mom, I'm done. I'll be on my way now," I announced as I stood up and made my way to the living room.

"Don't go yet, sweetie. I'm coming," she said.

I stepped out onto the front porch and waited, while my dad had already left the living room and gone upstairs.

"Here, honey, take this," my mom said, handing me a small envelope.

"What's this?" I asked, curious.

"Look inside," she encouraged.

I opened the envelope and found money. "Mom, why are you giving me money? I don't need it. Here, take it back," I insisted, extending my hand to return the envelope.

However, she refused. "No, dear. I want you to have a little money with you. You never know, you might need it later when you're there," she explained, a smile gracing her lips.

"What are you guys discussing?" my dad interjected. "Emma's going to be late," he added.

"Can't a mother and daughter have a little chat?" my mom retorted, shooting a playful glare at my dad.

"I didn't say that, honey. I was just..." my dad trailed off, realizing he had lost the argument. We all shared a laugh.

"I'll be heading to the bus stop now," I said, preparing to leave.

"Take care of yourself, sweetie," my mom said affectionately.

"Don't let the bugs bite," my dad teased.

"Honey, don't say that," my mom scolded him with a small glare.

"I'm sorry, my love. Let's go inside now, you must be tired," my dad said, wrapping his arm around my mom as they entered the house.

Upon arriving at school, I noticed four large buses parked in the school parking lot, with students already boarding.

"Emma," Damion called out as he approached me.

"Hello, Damion. Why aren't you on the bus yet?" I asked.

"I just wanted to enjoy some fresh air before the bus gets ready to leave," he replied.

"Okay, then. I'll head to the bus now," I said.

"Let's go together," he suggested.

"But you said you wanted to wait until the bus fills up," I reminded him.

"I've changed my mind. Come on, let's go," he said, leading the way towards the almost-filled third bus.

"Let's sit here," he gestured, motioning for me to take the window seat.

"Thanks," I said, attempting to place my bag in the overhead bin.

"Let me help you with that," he offered, reaching for my bag.

"Oh, don't worry, I can manage," I insisted, a smilegracing my face.

"Oh, don't worry. I'll do it," Damion insisted, taking the bag from my hand.

"Thank you," I expressed my gratitude.

"Oh, it's nothing," he replied.

Damion seemed particularly cheerful today. Perhaps he was excited about the camping trip, I mused to myself.

Settling into my seat, I noticed Ethan and Chloe walking towards the last bus. Our eyes met, and we exchanged smiles. However, as Ethan's gaze lingered, his smile faded. I wondered what had caused the sudden change in his expression. Did something happen? Did Chloe do something to upset him? But they seemed fine when they walked to the bus, I pondered, retrieving my phone and immersing myself in my music.

Soon, the bus started its journey, and we hit the road.

"What music are you listening to?" Damion inquired.

"It's 'Riptide' by Vance Joy," I replied.

"Oh, I like that song. Can I listen to it?" he asked.

"Sure, here you go," I said, handing him the left piece of my headphones.

"Thanks," he expressed his gratitude as he placed it on his ears.

"Cool music," he commented.

Meanwhile, Ethan and Alex engaged in a conversation.

"Is it just me, or is Damion trying to come out of his shell? It feels a bit strange," Alex remarked.

"It's good, but it's also a bit unsettling. He's my friend, and I don't want any conflicts," Ethan responded.

"I didn't suggest that," Alex said calmly, his voice tinged with concern.

Ethan, confused, asked, "Well, what should I do then?"

Leaning in slightly, Alex reassured him, "Stay calm, act like nothing has changed, and when the time is right, be open and honest about your feelings."

Just as the two friends were engrossed in their conversation, Jason interrupted from the back with a mischievous air. "Hey guys, check this out!" he exclaimed, rising from his seat and showing them a video on his device with explicit content.

"Focus, Jason. This isn't the right time," Alex scolded him firmly.

Somewhat deflated, Jason muttered, "You always ruin the fun," as he settled back into his chair.

Soon, we arrived at the campsite, marking the beginning of our adventure. Mr. Thompson, our guide, gathered everyone and commanded our attention.

"Attention, students! Gather around for important instructions during our time in this beautiful wilderness," he declared.

We formed a circle, eagerly awaiting his guidance. With authority, he began, "Let me introduce Mrs. Parker, the owner of Parker's Campground, where we'll be staying. She has a few words to share."

Mrs. Parker, radiating warmth, addressed us with a smile, "Hello, students. Welcome to Parker's Campground. Please Enjoy your stay and respect the wonders of nature. Okay."

We replied, "Okay," in unison as Mrs. Parker bid her farewell.

Mr. Thompson continued, reminding us of the support we would receive. "Dedicated teachers will guide you," he said. "Boys on one side, girls on the other. Respect the environment, leave no trace."

His words emphasized responsibility. "Follow your teachers' instructions, stay in designated areas, and prioritize safety. Appreciate wildlife from afar," he emphasized.

As he neared the end of his speech, he encouraged us, "Cherish this opportunity for camaraderie and growth. Make memories, return with gratitude and enriched souls."

With those final words, we headed to our assigned cabins.

"Wow, there are so many flies and mosquitoes here," Chloe exclaimed, disdain evident in her voice as she entered the cabin. Seeing her messy bed, she sighed in relief. "Luckily, I brought my own covers. Kelly, can you bring my bags?"

Struggling with the heavy luggage, Kelly gasped for breath. "What did you pack? It's so heavy."

Dropping the bags to catch her breath, Kelly watched as Chloe unzipped her overstuffed luggage. Christine, intrigued, remarked, "You packed a lot."

Chloe shrugged. "I came prepared for anything. Go get your bags, and let's arrange our beds together. I have three covers, so I'll take one, and you two can share the rest."

As Chloe revealed her supplies, Christine marveled, "You thought of everything."

Chloe sprayed mosquito repellent on herself and exclaimed, "These mosquitoes are relentless. Good thing I knew they'd be here and came prepared."
