From what I could recall regarding what a paladin was, they were both martial and magical. During my time and era, paladins were rare, almost divine in their reputations even. To see one grace a battlefield was like seeing an angel themselves descend upon the world and wreak havoc against the enemies of heaven.
Several thousand years later, these paladins have increased in number and serve different holy orders altogether. They had also lost most of their divine sparkle which made them seem angelic in the first place.
But maybe it was also because of the fact that I have, for a lack of a better way of describing it, lost my fascination with the divine. I do not see angel halos as being anything but dangerous.
Looking at Pamilva, remembering Lisala, Sola, and Fyren, the current generation of paladins had thus far proven themselves to be lackluster.
