As the city erupted into motion, preparing for battle, Piper felt the weight of what was coming settle on her shoulders. Diamond City had survived one war. Now, they had to survive another.
The atmosphere in the command room was tense. The air smelled of old wood and burning oil from the dim lanterns that barely lit the space. Maps, scattered documents, and a half-finished cup of coffee sat atop the long wooden table in the center of the room. Sico stood at the head, arms crossed, his sharp eyes scanning the faces of the people gathered.
Preston, Sarah, Piper, Hancock, Robert, MacCready, and Sturges—all of them were waiting, watching him, knowing that what he said next would determine whether Diamond City survived the coming storm.
Sico exhaled, then spoke with the weight of command in his voice.
"Preston, Sarah—I need you two to take charge of the soldiers. The eastern side is where they're coming from, so that's our main defense point. Set up barricades, get the men in position, and be ready to hold the line."
Preston gave a sharp nod, his jaw tight. "Got it. We'll make sure they don't get through."
Sarah, who had been leaning against the wall, pushed off and adjusted the strap of her combat rifle. "We'll keep them pinned down as long as we can."
Sico turned his attention to Robert and MacCready. "You two are taking the commandos. We're not just defending; we're hitting them before they even reach the walls. Use the buildings—set up ambushes, cut them down before they get close. I want them bleeding before they ever see Diamond City."
MacCready smirked, already checking the magazine of his sniper rifle. "Now that's my kind of plan."
Robert nodded, expression serious. "We'll make sure they lose men before they even touch our defenses."
Sico shifted his gaze to Sturges. The man was already rubbing his chin, thinking ahead. "Sturges, I need defensive structures built fast. Barricades, sandbags, firing positions—anything to give our soldiers cover."
Sturges grinned, the challenge clearly exciting him. "Oh, you got it, boss. I'll make sure those raiders walk into a damn fortress."
Finally, Sico turned to Hancock and Piper. "I need reinforcements from Sanctuary. Take the trucks and Humvees, load them up with as many fighters as you can, and get back here fast. We'll need every gun we can get."
Hancock tipped his hat, flashing a grin. "I do love a good road trip. We'll be back before those bastards know what hit 'em."
Piper, however, looked worried. "You sure you'll be alright until we get back?"
Sico met her gaze. "We don't have a choice. Just be quick."
Piper nodded, then sighed. "Alright. Just don't die before I get back."
Sico smirked. "Wouldn't dream of it."
With their orders set, everyone moved. The command room emptied as each team rushed to prepare for the battle ahead.
The eastern gate of Diamond City was now a flurry of activity. Soldiers hammered together barricades, piled sandbags, and reinforced the walls. The air was thick with tension—everywhere, people worked with grim determination, knowing that failure meant death.
Preston and Sarah moved among the soldiers, making sure everyone was in position.
"You hear that?" Sarah asked, scanning the distant horizon.
Preston frowned. It was faint, but there—the distant rumble of engines and the heavy march of feet. "They're coming."
Preston turned to the soldiers. "Everyone in position! Keep your heads down, and don't fire until they're close!"
From his perch in one of the watchtowers, MacCready watched through his scope as a dark wave of raiders spread across the landscape. "Damn," he muttered. "They brought a whole army."
Robert, standing on a rooftop nearby, clenched his fist. "They don't know what's waiting for them."
He turned to the commandos hidden in the buildings. "Hold your fire. Wait until they're in the kill zone."
The raiders moved closer. Some rode motorcycles, others walked, their weapons gleaming in the fading light. They were laughing, shouting, confident in their numbers.
They had no idea what was coming.
As soon as the first wave of raiders entered the kill zone, Robert signaled.
A single gunshot rang out—MacCready's sniper rifle. The first raider fell.
Then, all hell broke loose.
From the rooftops, the commandos opened fire, their shots ripping through the unsuspecting raiders. The once-confident charge turned into chaos as bodies dropped and blood splattered across the cracked asphalt.
The raiders screamed, ducking for cover—only to find there was none.
Sico watched from the eastern barricades as the ambush unfolded. "Good. Now let's see if they break."
The raiders, however, weren't retreating. Instead, a second wave pushed forward—more disciplined, moving under cover.
Sico's eyes narrowed. "They're adapting fast."
A sudden explosion rocked the ground as the raiders fired a makeshift rocket launcher at the barricades.
Preston ducked as debris flew overhead. "Shit! They've got heavy weapons!"
Sico grabbed a nearby radio. "Sturges, we need those barricades reinforced now!"
"Already on it!" Sturges' voice crackled back.
More gunfire erupted. Raiders with machine guns laid down suppressing fire as others moved in.
Preston gritted his teeth. "Hold the line! Don't let them break through!"
The battle was only beginning.
Meanwhile, on the road to Sanctuary, Hancock and Piper pushed the trucks to their limits.
Hancock gripped the wheel, cigarette hanging from his lips. "Think they're holding out okay?"
Piper, checking her rifle, frowned. "They better be."
Ahead, Sanctuary finally came into view. Soldiers were already waiting, armed and ready.
As soon as they stopped, Piper jumped out. "Load up! Diamond City needs us now!"
Within minutes, the trucks and Humvees were filled with reinforcements.
Hancock revved the engine. "Alright, let's haul ass."
The convoy roared back toward Diamond City, dust kicking up behind them.
Time was running out.
Back at the eastern barricades, the battle had reached its peak.
The raiders were pushing harder, the ground littered with bodies.
Sico, rifle in hand, fired round after round. He barely had time to breathe.
Preston crouched beside him. "We can't hold much longer!"
Sico's jaw tightened as he reloaded his rifle. The barricades were holding, but barely. The raiders kept pressing forward, their heavy weapons chipping away at their defenses. If this continued, Diamond City's eastern gate wouldn't last much longer.
Preston ducked as another explosion rocked the ground, sending dirt and debris flying. "We can't hold much longer!" he shouted over the gunfire.
Sico, standing firm amid the chaos, narrowed his eyes. "Yes, we can."
He turned to Robert and MacCready, his voice sharp and commanding. "Robert, MacCready—take the commandos, flank them from behind. Hit them hard, fast, and don't stop until they're bleeding out in the dirt."
MacCready smirked, already on the move. "Now you're speaking my language."
Robert simply nodded, his expression grim but determined. "We'll carve through them."
With that, the two led their team of elite fighters into the ruins, disappearing among the shadows. Their job was to cut off the raiders' momentum, to force them into disarray and buy enough time for Hancock and Piper to return with reinforcements.
Sico exhaled, scanning the battlefield. The air was thick with smoke, screams, and gunfire. Then, amid the chaos, his eyes caught something—or rather, someone.
Beyond the main line of raiders, past the burning wreckage and dead bodies, stood a man. He wasn't fighting, wasn't scrambling for cover like the rest. Instead, he was giving orders, pointing and shouting, directing the waves of attackers.
A peculiar raider—one who looked like he didn't belong among the others.
Sico's gut twisted. "Preston," he called out, nudging his lieutenant. "That raider in the back. The one barking orders."
Preston turned, eyes squinting as he followed Sico's line of sight. Then his expression darkened. "Shit… that's him."
Sico's heart pounded. "That's the bastard we saw back at the raider base with Piper, isn't it?"
Preston nodded, jaw clenched. "Yeah. That's their leader."
Sico inhaled sharply. If they took him out, the raiders might break. He turned back to Preston. "We need to get to him."
Preston hesitated, looking at the chaos around them. "How? We can barely hold our ground as it is."
Sico's mind raced. He grabbed his radio. "Robert, MacCready—change of plans. There's a high-value target at the back of their lines. Looks like their leader. We need him dead."
Robert's voice crackled through. "Understood. We'll take him out."
MacCready added, his tone laced with amusement, "He won't even hear the bullet coming."
Sico nodded to himself, then turned back to Preston. "We hold here. As long as we can."
The battle raged on. The raiders, relentless, continued their assault. Explosions tore through the barricades, forcing Sico and his men to constantly shift positions. Smoke filled the air, making it harder to see, but the defenders fought on.
Then, amidst the chaos, something changed.
The sound of distant gunfire—rapid, precise, cutting through the battlefield. Screams erupted from the raiders' rear lines.
MacCready and Robert had struck.
From the buildings and ruins, the commandos unleashed hell. They fired from cover, their bullets finding targets with deadly efficiency. Raiders, caught between Diamond City's walls and the ambush behind them, panicked.
Some turned to fight the commandos. Others hesitated, their charge faltering.
Sico pressed himself against the barricade, reloading his rifle as the battle roared around him. The air was thick with smoke, blood, and the acrid stench of burning debris. The raiders' assault hadn't stopped, but something had changed—the relentless charge had faltered, just slightly, as gunfire from behind tore through their ranks.
Then, the radio crackled to life in his ear.
"Damn it," MacCready's voice came through, breathless but sharp. "I got a shot on their leader—missed his damn head, though. Nailed his shoulder instead."
Sico exhaled sharply, adrenaline pumping through his veins. "Is he down?"
"Not dead, but he sure as hell felt it," MacCready replied. "Raiders are panicking. Some of 'em are yelling about their boss being hit. We got 'em confused."
Sico allowed himself a small smirk. "Good. That buys us time."
He peeked over the barricade, scanning the raider forces. Just as MacCready had said, confusion rippled through their ranks. Some fighters hesitated, looking toward the rear, their focus slipping from the assault. The relentless pressure against Diamond City's eastern gate momentarily eased.
Then, another voice cut through the chaos.
A deep, ragged voice, loud enough to carry over the gunfire.
"KEEP PUSHING! DON'T STOP NOW!"
Sico's stomach twisted. His gaze snapped toward the raider leader's last known position.
"I'M STILL STANDING, DAMN IT! DO NOT LET OUR PLAN FALL APART! DIAMOND CITY WILL BE OURS!"
A wave of shouting followed as the raiders rallied. The hesitation vanished, replaced by renewed determination. They raised their weapons, letting out war cries as they surged forward again.
Sico cursed under his breath. He grabbed the radio. "MacCready, Robert—you hear that?"
MacCready's reply was clipped. "Yeah. Son of a bitch is still barking orders. What do you want us to do?"
Sico clenched his jaw, thinking fast. "You can't get another shot?"
"Negative," Robert answered this time. "We're pinned down. They've got some heavy gunners turning our way now."
Sico ran a hand over his face. They had been so close. If MacCready's shot had landed just a few inches higher, this battle might already be over.
Preston fired a burst from his rifle before ducking back down. "That bastard's tough, I'll give him that."
Sico's mind raced. If the leader wasn't dead, he needed to be. The battle was hanging in the balance, and if they didn't break the raiders soon, their defenses wouldn't hold.
Then, a new sound cut through the chaos.
Engines.
Loud, roaring engines.
Sico turned toward the road, eyes widening.
Hancock and Piper were back.
Trucks and Humvees barreled toward Diamond City, their headlights piercing through the smoke-filled night. The reinforcements had arrived.
Sico grabbed his radio again. "Piper! Hancock! Status?"
Piper's voice came through, breathless but urgent. "We're here! Got a full load of soldiers ready to go!"
Sico didn't hesitate. "Good. Get them to the east gate NOW!"
The raiders heard it too. They knew what it meant.
Their leader, even from his injured position, must have realized they were running out of time.
"FORWARD! KILL THEM ALL!" he roared.
The raiders surged again, their desperation making them reckless. They charged, no longer concerned with cover, only with overwhelming the defenses before reinforcements could solidify the city's hold.
Sico knew this was it. They had minutes, maybe less, to hold.
"PRESTON!" he barked. "LAST PUSH! DON'T LET THEM THROUGH!"
Preston nodded, his eyes blazing with determination. He turned to the soldiers still standing. "You heard him! We hold this line! No matter what!"
The barricades shuddered under the impact of the raiders' final, frenzied assault. Gunfire roared. Explosions lit up the night.
