As Sico stood there, overseeing the training, he knew that the Minutemen's future rested on these recruits. They weren't ready yet—not by a long shot—but with time, training, and the right guidance, they could become the soldiers the Commonwealth desperately needed. And when the time came, Sico would be ready to lead them into battle.
Two weeks had passed since the first batch of recruits began their intensive training regimen under Cait's stern guidance. The once ragtag group of settlers had slowly but steadily transformed into a more disciplined fighting force. The relentless drills, shooting practices, and hand-to-hand combat training had sharpened their skills. Of course, not all of them had adapted at the same pace, but overall, the progress was undeniable.
Sico stood by the window of the meeting room in Minutemen Plaza, looking out over the courtyard where recruits—now numbering 2,500—were going through their morning exercises. The sun was still low in the sky, casting long shadows over the plaza. It was a symbol of the rising strength of the Minutemen. While they still had a long way to go before all of the recruits could be considered seasoned fighters, the number of trained individuals had grown significantly. It was time to make the next strategic move: distributing these recruits across the Commonwealth to fortify their strongholds.
Sico turned away from the window and looked toward the large wooden table in the center of the room. Spread across it was a detailed map of the Commonwealth, marked with all of the Minutemen's current holdings, outposts, and fortifications. Preston Garvey and Sarah Lyons, two of his most trusted officers, sat across from each other, deep in conversation as they discussed the next phase of deployment.
Preston, ever the tactician, had a list of potential postings in front of him, detailing where each recruit could be best utilized. Sarah, on the other hand, was focused on the logistical challenges of moving such a large number of recruits across the Commonwealth safely. Both of them looked up when Sico joined them at the table.
"Alright," Sico began, leaning over the map, "we've got 2,500 new recruits trained and ready to be deployed. They're not veterans yet, but they've come a long way in two weeks. It's time to start integrating them into our forces across the Commonwealth, fortifying our outposts, and reinforcing our supply lines."
Preston nodded, his fingers tracing the map. "Agreed. The new recruits will bolster our numbers significantly, but we need to be smart about how we place them. Some outposts are in dire need of reinforcements, while others are holding strong. We can't afford to spread them too thin, but we also need to make sure that all our key locations are protected."
Sarah chimed in, flipping through her notes. "Transporting them will be the real challenge. With raider activity on the rise, not to mention the super mutants, moving this many people across open terrain is a massive risk. We'll need to coordinate heavily with our supply caravans and possibly assign escorts for some of the more vulnerable routes."
Sico nodded, acknowledging the complexities of the situation. "We'll prioritize the locations that are in the greatest danger first. We can't afford to lose any more settlements to the raiders or gunners. But we also need to ensure that these recruits don't walk into a death trap. I don't want to send them to the frontlines without proper support."
He looked down at the map, pointing to several key locations. "Sanctuary Hills is secure, but the Castle could use a stronger garrison. Our scouts have reported increased raider activity near the coast, and if the gunners make a move, we'll need every fighter we can get there."
Preston nodded in agreement, tapping the Castle on the map. "I've been thinking the same thing. Right now, we've got about 200 Minutemen stationed there, but with the size of the fort, we could easily station another 300 recruits without overextending our resources. The added manpower would allow us to secure the perimeter better and set up additional artillery placements."
"Good," Sico replied. "We'll send 300 to the Castle. That should give them enough firepower to hold off anything short of a full-scale assault."
Next, Sico shifted his attention to Starlight Drive-In, a key supply hub that connected several settlements through its centralized location. "Starlight Drive-In has been handling a lot of our logistics, but it's also vulnerable. We need to send at least 200 recruits there to ensure that it stays operational."
Sarah looked at her notes and added, "That makes sense. Starlight is one of our main trading posts. If raiders take that out, it'll be a massive blow to our supply chain. I'll make sure to assign some more experienced Minutemen to lead that group."
Preston added, "We should also consider Fort Hagen. The Brotherhood of Steel hasn't been too friendly lately, and if they decide to move against us, Fort Hagen would be one of their first targets. We've got some fortifications there, but it's not enough."
"Agreed," Sico said. "Let's assign 250 recruits to Fort Hagen. We'll also send some heavy weapons with them. If the Brotherhood makes a move, I want that fort to hold."
Sarah ran her fingers over the map, tracing the route from Sanctuary Hills to Fort Hagen. "That'll be a tricky route, especially with Brotherhood patrols in the area. We'll need to assign a strong escort for that group."
Preston glanced at the other locations on the map, his brow furrowing. "Then there's the northern settlements—Taffington Boathouse, Abernathy Farm, and Greentop Nursery. We've had reports of increasing super mutant sightings up there. Those settlers are tough, but they're going to need reinforcements sooner rather than later."
Sico considered for a moment before responding. "We'll send 150 to Greentop and 100 to Abernathy. Those numbers should be enough to hold off any immediate threats while we keep an eye on the super mutants. We'll keep another 100 in reserve at Sanctuary in case we need to move them out quickly."
Sarah interjected, "What about the western territories? Sunshine Tidings, Oberland Station, and Graygarden? They've been quiet lately, but if something happens out there, we don't have the numbers to respond quickly."
"We can't ignore the west," Sico agreed. "Send 100 to Sunshine Tidings and another 100 to Oberland. They're more isolated, so we'll need to make sure they have plenty of supplies to last them through the next few months."
Preston glanced at the list again and added, "We've also got Quincy and Jamaica Plain to think about. They're both vulnerable and important locations for future expansion. If we lose either of those, it'll set us back in the south."
"Right," Sico agreed, tapping his fingers against the map. "We'll send 200 to Jamaica Plain and 150 to Quincy. I want both of those places fortified, but we'll need to keep some reserves in case anything unexpected comes up."
Sarah made notes as Sico spoke, her mind already working on how to execute the logistics of moving such a large number of recruits to various locations. "This is going to take time and careful planning, but we can make it happen. I'll make sure the caravans are well-protected and that the recruits are spread out strategically. We'll also need to keep regular communication with all the outposts to make sure we can respond if anything goes wrong."
Sico straightened, satisfied with their plan of action. "Good. We've got a solid strategy, but things can change quickly out there. Stay flexible, and make sure each group has someone they can trust in charge. We can't afford any mistakes."
Preston nodded, rolling up the map. "I'll get the squads organized and brief the captains. We'll have the first group out by tomorrow morning."
"Same here," Sarah added. "I'll make sure the supplies are ready to go. We'll get those recruits where they need to be."
Sico gave them both a nod of approval. "Alright, then. Let's get to work. The Commonwealth isn't going to defend itself."
As Preston and Sarah left the meeting room to carry out their assignments, Sico lingered for a moment, staring down at the map of the Commonwealth. The weight of leadership pressed down on him, but he knew that with the right people and the right strategy, they could protect the settlements and secure a future for the Minutemen.
As soon as the meeting adjourned, Sico stepped out into the brisk morning air, his mind already racing with the logistics of the task ahead. The plaza was bustling with activity, recruits practicing drills, supply caravans being loaded, and the hum of power armor being prepped for the journey ahead. This was a critical moment for the Minutemen; if they were going to make a significant impact across the Commonwealth, everything had to run smoothly.
Preston and Sarah met him near the motor pool, where a line of old but functional trucks stood ready. These ten trucks, retrofitted and modified with scrap parts, were the best the Minutemen had at their disposal. Each one had been armored with metal plates salvaged from old pre-war vehicles, and their tires had been reinforced to handle the rough, uneven terrain of the Commonwealth. Though they were far from perfect, they were sturdy and reliable, and that's what mattered most.
Preston was already talking to a group of Minutemen drivers, ensuring they understood the importance of their task. Sarah, meanwhile, was overseeing the loading of supplies—food, ammunition, medical kits, and spare parts for the trucks. The recruits would need all of it to survive and thrive in their new postings.
Sico joined them, scanning the organized chaos with a critical eye. He saw groups of recruits assembling near the trucks, their faces showing a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. Most had never been beyond the relative safety of Minutemen Plaza, but now they were about to venture into some of the most dangerous parts of the Commonwealth.
"Everything in order?" Sico asked, approaching Preston.
Preston nodded, glancing down at his clipboard. "Yeah. I've organized the recruits into squads, each with a squad leader who's had some combat experience. We've got about 250 recruits ready to go in this first wave, with more being prepped for deployment in the coming days."
Sico turned to Sarah, who was directing several Minutemen to secure the last of the supply crates onto the trucks. "How's the supply situation looking?"
Sarah adjusted her cap, her eyes scanning the trucks. "We've got enough to cover the first few weeks. After that, they'll be relying on supply caravans to keep them stocked. I've assigned extra rations to the more isolated outposts—Sunshine Tidings and Oberland Station, for example—since it'll be harder to get caravans out there quickly if they need help."
Sico appreciated Sarah's thoroughness. She had a knack for logistics, ensuring that every detail was accounted for, no matter how small. That kind of foresight was exactly what the Minutemen needed right now.
"Good," Sico said. "We can't afford any delays or shortages out there. These recruits are green, but they're eager. Let's make sure they've got everything they need to succeed."
As the final preparations were being made, Sico walked over to the line of trucks, speaking briefly with the drivers. Each one was an experienced Minuteman who had been with the organization for years. They knew the Commonwealth's roads—or what was left of them—like the back of their hands. But even with their experience, the dangers of the road were ever-present: raiders, super mutants, feral ghouls, and the constant threat of ambushes. Every journey into the Commonwealth was a risk, but it was a risk they had no choice but to take.
One by one, the trucks were loaded and the recruits boarded, their packs strapped tightly to their backs, rifles slung over their shoulders. Sico walked down the line of trucks, giving each recruit a nod of encouragement as they climbed aboard. He could see the determination in their eyes. They knew what was at stake—not just for themselves, but for the people of the Commonwealth.
Once all the trucks were loaded, Sico gathered with Preston and Sarah at the head of the convoy. He looked around, satisfied that everything was in order. "Alright, Preston, you're in charge of the convoy. Make sure the recruits are ready for anything. Sarah, you'll follow up with the next batch of supplies once this group is settled in."
Preston gave a firm nod. "We'll get them there, Sico. The Commonwealth will be a lot safer once we've got these outposts reinforced."
Sico's gaze moved to the horizon, where the first truck engines were revving to life. The sound of gears grinding and exhaust sputtering filled the air as the convoy prepared to move out.
"Good luck," Sico said, clapping Preston on the shoulder. "And stay sharp. We don't know what's waiting out there."
With a final wave, Preston climbed into the lead truck and gave the signal for the convoy to begin its journey. The trucks rumbled to life, their engines roaring as they rolled through the gates of Minutemen Plaza and out into the dangerous, unpredictable Commonwealth. The recruits inside clutched their weapons tightly, ready—or as ready as they could be—for the challenges that lay ahead.
Sarah stood next to Sico, watching the convoy disappear into the distance. "That's the first group. We'll have the rest of the recruits ready for deployment within the next few days."
Sico nodded, his mind already moving ahead to the next steps. "I'll be making rounds to the outposts over the next couple of weeks, checking in on them, making sure everything's running smoothly."
"Good idea," Sarah replied. "With raiders and super mutants acting up, we need to stay on top of things."
For a moment, the two of them stood in silence, watching the empty road ahead. The Commonwealth was as dangerous as it had ever been, but Sico felt a renewed sense of hope. They had the manpower, the supplies, and the determination to protect the settlements. The Minutemen were rising again, and Sico would ensure that they succeeded.
As the convoy moved further from sight, Sico turned back toward the plaza, where more recruits were already lining up for their next drills. The work was never done, but that was fine. Sico was ready for whatever came next.
