As the meeting adjourned and the others filed out of the room, Sico remained behind, his eyes lingering on the photograph of McDonough and the Courser. He knew the road ahead would be dangerous, but he also knew they had no other choice. The Institute had made their move, and now it was time for the Minutemen to make theirs.
Sico left the meeting room with a sense of purpose, his mind already shifting to the next steps of their plan. The photograph of McDonough and the Courser still weighed heavily on his thoughts, but he couldn't afford to dwell on it. There was too much to do, and time was not on their side. He made his way to the Army HQ, where Preston and Sarah were busy preparing the soldiers for the mission ahead. The air was thick with tension, but also a sense of determination. Everyone knew what was at stake.
As he approached the HQ, the sound of voices and the clatter of gear reached his ears. The courtyard was alive with activity—soldiers moving in organized chaos, checking weapons, loading supplies, and receiving orders. Preston stood at the center of it all, his voice carrying over the noise as he directed the troops. Sarah was nearby, her sharp eyes scanning the scene as she coordinated the logistics. Sico took a moment to observe them, appreciating the efficiency with which they worked. They were a well-oiled machine, and he was grateful to have them by his side.
He walked over to Preston first, who was in the middle of briefing a group of soldiers. Preston noticed him approaching and dismissed the group with a nod, turning to face Sico. "General," he greeted, his tone respectful but urgent. "We're just about ready. The troops are mobilized, and we're finalizing the details."
"Good," Sico replied, his gaze sweeping over the bustling courtyard. "How many soldiers are we taking?"
"Five hundred," Preston said without hesitation. "It's a sizable force, but we need to be prepared for anything. I've also coordinated with Jenny to ensure we have enough supplies to last us through the mission. Ammo, rations, medical kits—everything's accounted for."
Sico nodded, his expression thoughtful. Five hundred soldiers was a significant number, but Diamond City was a large settlement, and they couldn't afford to be outnumbered if things went south. "What about transportation?" he asked, turning to Sarah, who had joined them.
Sarah crossed her arms, her tone brisk but confident. "I've got fifteen trucks and six Humvees ready to go. They're being loaded as we speak. The trucks will carry the bulk of the troops and supplies, while the Humvees will provide support and reconnaissance if needed. We'll also have a few motorcycles for scouts to keep an eye on the perimeter."
"Good thinking," Sico said, his voice appreciative. "We'll need to move quickly once we're inside the city, and having those Humvees could make all the difference."
Sarah nodded, her expression serious. "We're also prepping for potential resistance. If the Diamond City security guards are compromised, we'll need to be ready to neutralize the threat without causing unnecessary casualties. I've got a team working on non-lethal options, but we're not taking any chances."
"Understood," Sico replied, his tone firm. "We'll do everything we can to minimize collateral damage, but our priority is taking down McDonough and securing the city. If the guards are working with the Institute, we'll have no choice but to engage."
Preston and Sarah exchanged a glance, their expressions grim but resolute. They knew the risks as well as Sico did, and they were prepared to do whatever it took to protect the Commonwealth.
After a few more minutes of discussion, Sico excused himself, leaving Preston and Sarah to continue their preparations. He had one more stop to make before they moved out. The Commandos—the Minutemen's elite special forces—were a critical part of the plan, and he needed to ensure they were ready.
---
The Commandos were stationed in a separate area of Sanctuary, away from the main army. Their training grounds were secluded, designed to simulate the kind of environments they would encounter in the field. As Sico approached, he could hear the sound of gunfire and the occasional shout of commands. The air was thick with the scent of gunpowder and sweat, a testament to the intensity of their training.
Robert and MacCready were at the center of it all, overseeing the final preparations. Robert, a seasoned veteran with a no-nonsense attitude, was barking orders to a group of Commandos as they ran through a series of drills. MacCready, ever the sharpshooter, was perched on a nearby platform, his rifle resting across his lap as he observed the scene with a critical eye.
Sico walked over to them, his presence immediately drawing their attention. Robert straightened, his expression serious but respectful. "General," he greeted, his voice carrying a note of anticipation. "We're just about ready. The Commandos are prepped and waiting for your orders."
"Good," Sico replied, his gaze sweeping over the group. The Commandos were a formidable force—highly trained, disciplined, and capable of operating in the most hostile environments. They were the best of the best, and Sico knew they would be crucial to the success of the mission.
MacCready hopped down from the platform, his movements smooth and deliberate. He slung his rifle over his shoulder and approached Sico, his tone casual but laced with determination. "We've been running through the infiltration plan. If things go sideways, we'll be ready to hit the ground running."
Sico nodded, his expression thoughtful. "What's the status of the team?"
"We've got fourthy Commandos ready to deploy," Robert replied, his tone confident. "They're split into four teams of ten, each with a specific objective. Team Alpha will infiltrate the city through the maintenance tunnels and secure the power grid. Team Bravo will take out any hostile forces in the security headquarters. Team Charlie will provide overwatch and sniper support, and Team Delta will be on standby to assist wherever they're needed."
"And you're sure the maintenance tunnels are still accessible?" Sico asked, his brow furrowed. Diamond City's defenses were formidable, and any miscalculation could jeopardize the entire mission.
MacCready smirked, his tone dry. "We've got a guy on the inside—one of Piper's contacts. He's been feeding us intel on the city's layout, including the tunnels. They're not heavily guarded, and we'll have a clear path to the power grid."
Sico nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Good. Once you're inside, your priority is to secure the city and neutralize any threats. If the security guards are compromised, take them out quietly. We can't afford to alert McDonough or the Institute until we're ready to move."
"Understood," Robert said, his tone firm. "We'll get it done."
MacCready crossed his arms, his expression serious. "What about McDonough? Once we're inside, do we take him out immediately, or do we wait for your signal?"
Sico hesitated for a moment, his mind racing. Taking out McDonough was the ultimate goal, but they needed to do it in a way that minimized collateral damage. "Wait for my signal," he said finally. "We'll need to coordinate with the main force to ensure the city is secure before we make our move. If McDonough gets wind of what's happening, he could try to escape or call in reinforcements."
MacCready nodded, his expression grim. "Got it. We'll keep a low profile until you give the word."
Sico studied them for a moment, his gaze steady. "This mission is critical. If we fail, the Institute gains a foothold in Diamond City, and the entire Commonwealth could be at risk. I'm counting on you to get the job done."
Robert and MacCready exchanged a glance, their expressions resolute. "We won't let you down," Robert said, his voice firm. "The Commandos are ready."
Sico gave them a small nod, his tone appreciative. "I know you are. Get your teams ready. We move out at dawn."
With that, he turned and left the training grounds, his mind already shifting to the next steps of the plan. The Commandos were in good hands, and he trusted Robert and MacCready to lead them effectively. But the weight of what lay ahead still pressed heavily on his shoulders.
As he made his way back to the Minutemen HQ, Sico couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in his chest. The mission was risky, and there were too many variables to account for. But he knew they had no other choice. The Institute had made their move, and now it was time for the Minutemen to respond.
Sico stepped into the Minutemen HQ, the weight of the day's preparations still heavy on his shoulders. The building was a hive of activity, with officers and soldiers moving briskly through the halls, their voices a low hum of urgency. Maps and reports were spread across tables, and the air was thick with the scent of coffee and the faint tang of gun oil. Despite the chaos, there was a sense of purpose—a shared determination to see the mission through.
As he made his way through the bustling room, he spotted Piper near the far wall, her red coat standing out against the muted tones of the HQ. She was leaning against a table, her notebook in hand, but her eyes lit up as she saw him approaching. She waved him over, a small smile playing on her lips despite the gravity of the situation.
"Sico!" she called, her voice carrying over the noise of the room. "Over here!"
Sico made his way to her, his boots clicking against the polished floor. He could see the excitement in her eyes, mixed with a hint of relief. "What's up, Piper?" he asked, his tone calm but curious. "You look like you've got something."
Piper straightened, her expression turning serious as she tucked her notebook under her arm. "I just got off the line with our contacts at the Colonial Taphouse in Diamond City. They're ready for us."
Sico raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "Go on."
"I've briefed them on the plan," Piper continued, her voice low but steady. "They know the Commandos are coming, and they've agreed to help. When the teams arrive, the Colonial Taphouse will serve as their temporary HQ. It's a central location, and it's discreet enough to keep the operation under wraps until the main force arrives."
Sico nodded, his mind already working through the implications. The Colonial Taphouse was a well-known establishment in Diamond City, frequented by locals and travelers alike. It was the perfect cover—a place where the Commandos could blend in without drawing too much attention. "Good thinking," he said, his tone appreciative. "Have they secured the area?"
"As much as they can," Piper replied, her expression cautious. "They've cleared out the back rooms and set up a makeshift command center. It's not ideal, but it'll do for now. They've also got eyes on McDonough's movements, so they'll be able to feed us real-time intel once the Commandos are in position."
Sico crossed his arms, his brow furrowed in thought. "What about the security guards? Any signs that they're onto us?"
Piper shook her head, her tone confident. "Not yet. The guards are keeping to their usual patrols, and there's no indication that McDonough suspects anything. But we'll need to move fast. The longer we wait, the greater the risk of exposure."
Sico exhaled slowly, his mind racing. The plan was coming together, but there were still too many variables to account for. The Commandos would need to move quickly and quietly, and the main force would have to be ready to back them up at a moment's notice. It was a delicate balance, and one wrong move could jeopardize the entire mission.
"Alright," he said finally, his voice firm. "Tell your contacts to keep a low profile and stay ready. The Commandos will be there soon, and we'll need all the help we can get."
Piper nodded, her expression resolute. "I'll make sure they're prepared. And Sico…" She hesitated for a moment, her gaze softening. "Be careful out there. This isn't just about taking down McDonough. It's about protecting the people of Diamond City. We can't afford to lose sight of that."
Sico met her gaze, his expression serious but reassuring. "I know, Piper. And we won't. But we also can't afford to let the Institute gain any more ground. If McDonough is working with them, he's a threat to everyone in the Commonwealth. We'll do whatever it takes to stop him, but we'll do it the right way."
Piper gave him a small smile, her tone light but sincere. "That's why I trust you, Sico. You always do the right thing, even when it's hard."
Sico chuckled softly, the tension in his chest easing just a fraction. "Thanks, Piper. That means a lot."
She nodded, her expression turning serious once more. "I'll keep you updated if I hear anything else. In the meantime, I'll make sure the Colonial Taphouse is ready for the Commandos. They'll have everything they need to get the job done."
"Good," Sico replied, his tone appreciative. "And Piper… thanks. We couldn't do this without you."
Piper smirked, her trademark confidence shining through. "You're welcome, General. Now go get some rest. You're going to need it."
With that, she turned and walked away, her notebook clutched tightly in her hand. Sico watched her go, a sense of gratitude washing over him. Piper was one of the most resourceful people he knew, and her dedication to the cause was unwavering. He knew he could count on her, no matter how dire the situation.
As he made his way to his office, Sico's mind was already shifting to the next steps of the plan. The Commandos would be moving out soon, and the main force would follow shortly after. The Colonial Taphouse would serve as their foothold in Diamond City, a place where they could regroup and plan their next move. But the real challenge would come when they confronted McDonough. The Mayor was a cunning opponent, and he wouldn't go down without a fight.
Sico sat down at his desk, the weight of the mission pressing heavily on his shoulders. He knew the risks, but he also knew what was at stake. The Institute had made their move, and now it was time for the Minutemen to respond. They would do whatever it took to protect Diamond City and the people who called it home.
