Chapter 31 - Chapter Thirty-One

Austin's hand hesitated over the key in the ignition after he'd parked up at the Miller's mansion. He wanted to hang out with his friends, but he was worried that David or Vivian would be there too. He still didn't trust Aaron's new friend, as Isabella had looked miserable when he saw her at the bar earlier today, even as she insisted that she was fine. And, while he'd given in and let Vivian think they were back together, he wasn't in the mood to spend time with her right now. She'd come around his place yesterday, on his one day off this week, and stayed all day. He wasn't proud of it, but he'd let her seduce him and they'd ended up in bed together. Today, he wanted to be away from all of that and just chill with his buddies.

Sean had heard the Sheriff's truck on the drive way from the kitchen and opened the door for him. When Austin saw him there, he resolutely turned the engine off, got out of his truck and headed towards the house.

"Y'alright there?" the younger Miller asked, having noticed that it had taken the family friend a few minutes before getting out.

"Yeah," Austin nodded with a shrug, not wanting to go into the issues plaguing him. "Is it just going to be the three of us?" he asked as he followed him in.

"Actually, just the two of us for now. Aaron's off somewhere with David I think," Sean answered. Like the Sheriff, he wasn't sure about Isabella's boyfriend either, so he was glad he wouldn't be hanging out with them today.

"Oh, good," the Sheriff nodded now as they made their way up to the games' room. "Well, you know what I mean," he added awkwardly when he realised what it may have sounded like. The other man simply nodded as he set the TV up.

"Ready when you are," Sean said after he'd set up the game and passed him the other controller.

"Ready to kick your ass," Austin grinned competitively as he made himself comfortable on the edge of the sofa, holding the controller up at the ready.

"Yeah, whatever dude," the Miller responded with an eye roll and pressed play.

They'd been playing for just over an hour, neither of them really gaining the upper hand when there was a knock on the door. "Oh, hey baby," Vivian's voice sounded out surprised when she saw her boyfriend playing video games with her cousin instead of coming to find her. "I was wondering who you were in here with," she said to her cousin now as she headed into the room. Sean had just pressed pause when she walked across their view of the screen to give the Sheriff a big kiss.

"Viv, we're kind'a in the middle of somethin'," he complained at his cousin, making a mental note to ask his friend about when they'd gotten back together.

"Oh, but I want to spend time with my baby," she cooed romantically, at which even Austin struggled not to roll his eyes.

"We spent all of yesterday together honey. Today I'd like to spend time with my friends," Austin said honestly, taking hold of her hands to gently caress them and press another kiss to her cheek, hoping that would be enough to convince her. She narrowed her eyes at him for a brief second before she kissed him on the lips.

"Guys, please, I'm gonna lose my appetite," Sean said as he tried not to gag when he saw way more tongue than he wanted. "Seriously, gross," he added, looking away as he shivered.

"Shut up, Sean, you're just jealous," Vivian told him now as she poked her tongue out at him, and he hoped she wasn't serious; he did not want to kiss anyone, least of all his own cousin, like that. "Maybe you can stay for dinner?" she asked her boyfriend now, batting her eyelashes at him sweetly. At this Austin did roll his eyes and gave a nod.

"Sure, I'll stay for dinner. Now skedaddle so we can finish our game," he told her and gave her a light smack on the bum when she finally straightened up to move away. For good measure she poked her tongue out at her cousin as she passed him and finally left the room. "Sorry about that," the Sheriff said once the door had clicked closed as he picked his controller back up, expecting his friend to start the game straight away.

"When did that happen again?" Sean asked instead, turning to look at his friend so he couldn't try to lie to him.

"The other week," Austin said, clearing his throat uncomfortably. "I wasn't planning to, but… well, you know what Viv's like once she's got something in her head," he expanded with a chuckle.

"I do… but I thought you were done with the whole on-off thing?" his friend asked a little confused. It hadn't been that long ago when they'd had a conversation about this and the Sheriff had definitely seemed like he'd had enough of going backwards and forwards, on and off, being picked up and dropped on a whim.

"I was… I am… I dunno," the law enforcer sighed as he went through his hair. "I'll figure it out," Austin shrugged, trying not to let his thoughts wander to the brunette who co-owned the bar. "Can we just continue playin', please?" he asked now, wanting the attention to shift away from himself now.

"Sure, but this conversation ain't over," Sean warned him and, once they both had hold of the controllers again, hit play.
