"This kid, I don't understand his game, but he can't be anything good." – said my mother after trying to process what I had said.
"Why?" – I asked.
"He cannot be trusted." – said my mother categorically.
"He won't be faithful, he won't dedicate himself, he's just playing with you." – my father tried to argue.
I shook my head.
"I knew he had a girlfriend when I started talking to him and she was there the day I accepted his proposal. He's not playing with me, at most I'd be the one playing with him." – I said, trying to make them understand that Kai was not wrong in the situation.
Maybe a little wrong for being so greedy when it comes to women, but that's something I've been getting used to little by little.
"Do you have any idea what you sound like when you say that"? – asked my mother, horrified.
I shrugged.
"He helps me study, he has his own money and he is not stingy with gifts. I'm the one getting the most out of the relationship." – I said, continuing to irritate them with the logic I chose to use.
My parents were worried and angry.
"We didn't raise you to be like this!" – my mother shouted.
"You expected me to become a Ministry employee, but that will probably never be my path. Maybe Auror would be something I'd be interested in, but I don't think I'll waste time on it." – I confessed, breaking their dream.
"So what are you going to do with your life?" – asked my worried father.
"Play Quidditch, participate in some dueling tournaments…" – I commented vaguely.
"This is not a stable life, how can you have a house, children?" – asked my mother, almost giving in to despair.
They really didn't understand, with just Dad's salary they raised us all, things were tight, but we never went hungry. When Dad won the Daily Prophet contest they decided to spend it all traveling to visit Bill in Egypt. The trip was fun, but when I stopped to think about it I realized that they should have saved the money for emergencies, or even repairing the house.
"You need to understand that we are about to enter a period of conflict again, Deatheates do not mobilize for fun, they know that You-Know-Who is alive. Kai said he'll come back and it's just a matter of time, I ended up with a diary of his last year that contained a piece of his soul. Kai said that this kind of thing is terrible and that it is a form of immortality. I'm making the best of this time, because most likely he'll be back before I finish my studies at Hogwarts. That's why I won't stop doing what I want, soon we'll have to fight for our lives, you need to remember that they consider us bloodtraitors." – I started telling them more than Kai knew so that they might understand that their concerns are in the wrong place at this moment.
My parents turned pale at my words and gave clear signs that they would reject my words.
"He was defeated when he attacked the Potters." – said my father trying to deny what I said.
"What's this about you having a diary with a piece of his soul in it? – asked my mother worriedly.
"He did something to be immortal. He will come back and they know it." – I said, trying to be firm.
My mother needed to sit down at that moment and my father helped her.
"So because you're insisting on being with this boy, you're just putting yourself in danger." – argued my mother.
I took a deep breath, they seemed to be ignoring part of what I was saying to fit their own narrative.
"He is one of those who opposes them, I already said that basically all of Slytherin hates him. He's already beaten Malfoy and his followers this year, to the point where they don't even think about retaliating." – I said again trying to convince them of Kai's suitability.
My mother had a complicated expression.
"This could be their plan." – she said, still trying to find some way that Kai could be guilty of something.
"Do you really believe Malfoy would let someone beat him up for a plan?" – I asked, losing a little patience.
The two were quiet at that moment, even if they wanted to convince me that Kai wasn't good for me, they couldn't say out loud that a Malfoy wouldn't be too arrogant and vain to accept being beaten for any reason.
"Kai is a good guy, he has his flaws, but he is always sincere with his intentions and does not hide what he does from us." – I said.
"Look what you're saying, you're putting yourself together with the other girls he's fooling." – declared my mother, dissatisfied.
I took a deep breath.
"Because he's my boyfriend, as well as Bridget Storm's. She had to take refuge with him when her father tried to marry her off to the Crabbes. The Crabbes may be one of the Sacred 28, but everyone knows they are broke and are considered one of the dumbest families in all of Great Britain. Not to mention that Vincent Crabbe, her supposed fiancé, is a piece of lard who looks like he can't even read." – I told them.
My parents were thoughtful.
Due to my father's position in the Ministry, something no one wanted and the only reason he got such a high position, they knew the Storm and had probably seen Bridget at one of the balls he had to attend.
They didn't want to accept what I was saying, but they were finally coming to some useful conclusion.
"We are not happy with your decision, we want you to know that we highly disapprove of what you are doing." – said my father when he finished thinking.
"We didn't create you to go around playing with your life." – added my mother.
I nodded at their words.
"You seem adamant in your decision, so for now, we want you to know our opinion." – said my father in a serious tone.
"We don't want to take you away from us despite this, please, you need to keep us informed of everything you do, especially in times like this." – asked my mother.
I nodded at her.
"I'm not the only person going home to have a difficult conversation, Dad will probably hear something connected to some ex-Deatheaters in the next few days." – I said without realizing that the conversation had tired me so much.
My parents looked at me confused at that moment.
"What are you talking about dear?" – asked my father, a little anxiously.
"Kai befriended Millicent Bulstrode, he recommended that Lady Bulstrode put her father out of the house due to some circumstances." – I said.
My father's surprise was something funny to see.
"Goboldo was a… if he was thrown out of the house it would be too great a humiliation for him to keep quiet…" – he commented worriedly.
I took a deep breath, still thinking about whether or not it would be good to do what I was about to do.
"If you could help them I would appreciate it dad, I know your position doesn't hold much power, but any kind of ally at this time is good. They will need help and so will we, in what is to come it is better to have friends... I know you are traditional, but I ask that you do not judge them for what is about to happen." – I asked my father while trying to be vague in my explanation.
He realized that I had no right to explain what was about to happen, but gaining the support of a house like the Bulstrodes would be good.
He agreed to my request, even though he still demonstrated that he was against my decisions.
My mother, in turn, clearly wanted me to explain more about what I was talking about, but a touch from my father made her understand that I couldn't say any more.
Our Christmas was simple, with dinner cooked by my mother. The atmosphere between us wasn't the best and so we couldn't enjoy it as much as we would have liked.
I received a sweater knitted by my mother like every year and a box of cookies.
By New Year's the atmosphere was a little better, but in the end my parents were still disappointed in me.
My father started moving, he updated the wards of our house and tried to contact some friends from the time of the last war. He became more anxious after that, it seems he received some more information than I had brought, or at least confirmed some of it.
The return to Hogwarts would be at 11 am on the 5th, but that morning's headline in the Daily Prophet almost made us forget about it.
